Key Points of Exodus

• God’s grace towards His people• Delivery from the bonds of slavery • Deliverance to the freedom of a covenant

relationship and fellowship with him• No other biblical book surfaces elsewhere in

the OT as frequently as the Book of Exodus does; in the NT only the Books of Psalms and Isaiah are cited more

• Acts 7 is a key companion to Exodus and a quick read

Timeline• Moses lived from approximately 1525-1405 BC

– Completed writing of Exodus after 1445 BC– Exodus covers approximately 431 years of history– Arrival of Jacob and his family in Egypt to the

construction of the Tabernacle in Sinai in 1445 BC

• Israelites lived in Egypt for 430 years (Gen 12:40)– Time of oppression was 400 years (Gen 15:13)– Transition time in Egypt– Egyptians had expelled the Hyskos rulers of the time– Egyptians formed a world power of which there was no

match

Rulers of Egypt in Exodus• Ahmose I (1570-1548 BC)

– Founder of the New Kingdom after the expulsion of the Hyksos rulers, consolidated borders

– Initiated temple building projects

• Amenhotep (1548-~1528)

• Thutmose I (~1528-1518 BC)– Meaning “Born of Thoth” – Thoth the Egyptian god of wisdom– Moses’ early childhood– Therefore Moses would be Egyptian “Born of” and Mu

meaning water

Rulers of Egypt in Exodus• Thutmose II (1518-1504)

– Moses from about age 8 until 21

• Thutmose III (1504-1450)– Queen Hatshepsut (1498-1483, co-regency)– He is called the Napoleon of Ancient Egypt– He created the largest empire Egypt had ever seen– Moses kills Egyptian; identifies with his brethren (Heb.

11:24-26) then leaves Egypt (1486 BC, Ex 2:11-15)– Moses dwells in Midian 40 years (Acts 7:30)

King of Upper & Lower Egypt Menkheper Ra Son of Ra Thetmess

Rulers of Egypt in Exodus• Amenhotep II (1450-1425)

– Seventh pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty– Son of Thutmose III (but not the eldest son)– Successful military campaigns– Considered to be the Pharaoh of the Exodus– Firstborn slain in the last plague (Ex 12:29) – His eldest son did not follow him to throne.– over, after “Dream Inscription of Thutmose IV”

• Notes– Archaeologists give us great detail on the Pharaohs of

Moses’ time– Mummies have been found for each of the Pharaohs

Overview of Exodus 24:12-31:18• Revelation of God’s Dwelling, 24:12-18• Contributions to construct the sanctuary, 25:1-9• The tabernacle furnishings, 25:10-41• The tabernacle structure, Chapter 26• The tabernacle courtyard, 27:1-19• The installation of the priests, 27:20—28:43• The consecration of the priests, 29:1-37• The service of the priests, 29:38—30:38• The builders of the tabernacle, 31:1-11• The sign of the Sabbath, 31:12-18

• Moses stays on the mountain 40 days and nights– God gives him the stone tablets of the law and commands– And all the details of the tabernacle and its worship– God glory was like a consuming fire– Giving the Israelites a greater respect for God’s

revelation

• Israel had entered into a blood covenant with God– God decides to dwell among His people (John 1:14)– Similarly God dwells among Christians today

Revelation of God’s Dwelling (24:12-18)

Contribution to Build the Sanctuary (25:1-9)

• Moses’ description– Sanctuary (25:8), a place of holiness– Tabernacle (25:9), a dwelling place– Tent of Meeting (26:36), a place to meet with God– Tent of Testimony (38:21), a repository for the law

• Resting place for the Tablets of Testimony (10 commandments)

• Only voluntary gifts were acceptable– Love, rather than coercion, is the basis for giving

• With these contributions– God designs the tabernacle structure and all furnishings to

teach the Israelites about Himself– And how they could have a relationship with Him

The Tabernacle Furnishings (25:10-41)• Cubit was a standard form of measurement

– But various nations have different established lengths– It was the distance from the elbow and the middle finger

tip– From 17 to 21 inches, but probably near 18 inches

• Details are provided to us– Only to the extent that we need to understand the

fundamental significance of the tabernacle in scripture– The Ark is described (25:10-22)

• Contains the Testimony

– The Table is described (25:23-30)• Containing the bread of Presence

– The Lampshade is described (25:31-40)

The Tabernacle Structure (Chapter 26)

• Represents– Heaven where God dwells (Heb 4:14)– Work of Christ (John 2:19-21)– Individual believer (1 Cor 6:19)– Church (1 Tim 3:15)

• Consisted of a rigid support system– Curtains hung over the boards, eventually form a ceiling

• White (holy), blue (heavenly), purple (royal), crimson (blood)• 45 feet long X 15 feet wide X 15 feet high

– Boards, either solid or possibly frames– Bars, rods that the priests threaded through the boards– Veil, hung to separate rooms within the tabernacle

The tabernacle courtyard, 27:1-19

• Importance– People entered here– Sacrifices made, choirs sang, believers praised, sins were

forgiven, they prayed

• Altar of burnt offerings (27:1-8)– 4.5 feet tall, inside the entrance to the court– Four horns, to which ritual blood was applied (29:12)– People clung to the altar (1 Ki 1:50-51, 2:28)– Received the offerings of Israel

• Courtyard– About half the size of a football field– Curtains formed its perimeter

Installation of Priests, 27:20—28:43

• Responsibilities of priests– Maintain the holy place of the tabernacle

• Burn incense, trim/refill lamps, replace showbread

– Maintain the tabernacle courtyard• Sacrifices, bless the congregations, kept brazen altar fire lit

– Inspect and appraise people and sacrifices• Not allow the unclean in the courtyard

– Teach and counsel the people• Communicated the Mosaic Law to the congregation• Decided difficult cases of law

• Instructions given– Oil, appointment of Aaron and his line as priests,

garments, ephod, breastplate, robe, gold plate, tunic

Consecration of Priests, 29:1-37

• Instructions given in this section were carried out later– Seven day ritual appears in Leviticus 8

• All the priests bathed– Representing the necessity of cleanliness before God

• Sacrificial blood applied to ears, thumbs, toe– Represented the complete consecration– So they could hear the word of God– Serve as mediators– Walk as an example to others

• Anointing with oil represented their power provided by God for divine service

The Service of the Priests (29:38—30:38)• Incense offering (30:1-10)

– Located in the holy place and offered each morning– Burned all the time, constant devotion to God

• Atonement money (30:11-16)– Yearly “Temple Tax” (Matt 17:24)– Half shekel, or about .2 ounces in weight, two days pay

• Brazen laver (30:17-21)– Used for ceremonial washing

• Anointing oil (30:22-33)– Specified mixture to use in daily rituals

• Incense (30:34-38)

The Builders of the Tabernacle (31:1-11)

• God chooses men to build the tabernacle– From the tribe of Judah– And the tribe of Dan

• Summarized what God required for His people to approach him– God appointed the men who would be responsible for

interpreting the instructions of Moses– They were filled with spirit in order to make decisions

consistent with God’s will

The Sign of the Sabbath (31:12-18)

• Importance of the Sabbath again emphasized– This was unique to Israel– Those who failed to observe it died– As long as God continue to work through Israel has his

primary instrument (Rom 10:4, Christ is the end of the law)
