The Center for Disability Services “Student Venture Philanthropy

Program Awards $10,000 to The Center for Disability Services”

This year we awarded $10,000 and 200 volunteer hours to The Center for Disability Services (CDS) in Newark, OH. CDS’s mission is to provide children and adults who have or are at risk for disabilities, the support, training, opportunities, and facilities needed to achieve their highest degree of independence and greatest quality of life.

At CDS we assisted with opening a storefront for their Green Dreams project. With Green Dreams, the members of CDS grow and tend to plants and make candy bouquets and garden accessories. The storefront was created in the front room of the building where CDS is located in Newark.

Individuals with disabilities at CDS will be employed at the store, gaining valuable experience that they can possibly use to transition into jobs in the community.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: ALANA PEREZ ‘16 Living in the service house her first-year, Alana got involved with service on Denison’s campus. During this time she discovered Denison Venture Philanthropy. Since then Alana has been a devoted member of DVP. Alana served as the President, preceding President Jake Dennie ’17. After serving as President, her leadership did not end there. Along with Ben Hurford ’17, Alana served as the Conference Chair her senior year. Since this was our first year hosting a conference, Alana’s work was imperative to the success of both this year’s, and future conferences.

Thank you Alana! After she heals from an ankle injury, Alana will be joining the Peace Corps to teach in Shanghai.

Recruiting New Members at Fall and Spring Involvement Fairs Cookies and chit-chat: a way for our organization to grow.

At the beginning of every fall and spring semester the Campus Leadership and Involvement Center (CLIC) hosts an involvement fair. Depending on the weather, either Slayter Union or the Academic Quad is filled with organizations attempting to appeal to potential members.

The Involvement fairs, typically geared towards first-year students, are amazing opportunities to learn about new organizations. They are intended to help students… get involved! Any Denison student can take on the tables themselves. However, CLIC staff are on standby for any guidance. Many of our members would not have known about DVP if it weren’t for these involvement fairs.

During the fall Ashley and Oliver tackled the table with a plate full of homemade cookies. While Mike and Ariana carefully arranged mints to form “DVP” on the spring table.

The Professionals: Social Venture

Partners Early on an October morning several of our members travelled to Cleveland, OH. Cleveland is one of 40 cities in the country that holds a Social Venture Partners office. Our organization was lucky enough to meet with a few members of SVP Cleveland.

SVP is very similar to DVP except they perform at a much larger scale. It was a very rewarding experience to see the venture philanthropy model in other settings. Many of our first-year students were able to attend this meeting, gaining valuable knowledge and advice to help our organization excel.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: ARIANA FLANDRICK ‘19 Ariana is just one of the many first-year students to join DVP this year. At the fall involvement fair Ariana was lured to the DVP table by her RA, Oliver Gladfelter ’18. Intrigued by the organization, Ariana decided to attend a meeting.

Early on Ariana was elected as the Hours Coordinator, a position typically held by a new member in the organization. Ariana was later elected to the leadership team as the Constituent Relations Chair. Since part of her job as the CR Chair was to recognize outstanding members, there was never any recognition for her own hard work and dedication to DVP. Thank you Ariana! Continue to do great things!

Our Very First Conference! In February we hosted our very first conference right on Denison’s campus.

Alana Perez ’16 and Ben Hurford ’17, two of our very dedicated members, worked tirelessly this year to make a DVP conference a reality. Designed to stimulate conversation surrounding social entrepreneurship and effective giving, the conference featured presentations by Denison Enterprises, Dr. Fadhel Kaboub of Denison, Marietta College, and our former president, Jake Dennie ’17.

The event was highlighted by our keynote speaker Richard Marker, the founder of Wise Philanthropy. Marker spoke on educated giving and the best practices of grant making.
