Since its very beginning, the festival has revolved around the idea of promoting the prestige of the Czech culture through the legacy of the works of Antonín Dvořák as well as his students and contemporaries.

Since quality is the paramount criterion for the festival’s success, stages hosting Dvořák Prague concerts showcase only the most accomplished soloists, conductors, and internationally acclaimed orchestras and chamber ensembles that bring to the international audiences in the Czech capital music written by Dvořák and other world famous composers.

A breakthrough year for the event, 2013 saw the sixth edition of Dvořák Prague festival with a new artistic director and new additions to the organizational team. The changes were made not only to build on the success of previous editions and to improve further the artistic quality of the event, but also to enhance effi ciency, where reducing operating costs was the principal objective.

Despite the festival’s young age, this year’s edition reconfi rmed that the event has rightfully become a permanent and irreplaceable part of the Czech cultural landscape, as evidenced by sold out concert halls and more than ample interest on the part of corporate sponsors. The good news for the festival’s future development is the growing family of its partners and supporters as well as the continually rising interest in the Youth Club among young listeners. Highly commendable is the consistently generous attitude of Prague’s city fathers as well as a change in the way the festival is regarded by the Ministry of Culture.

Suffi cient and stable funding is necessary to guarantee the high-quality programming and fl awless organization required for a world-class event of this type. Since individual editions are planned several years in advance, the fi nancing scheme relies on multi-annual contracts with partners and sponsors. Being the organizer, our main objective is to foster and develop these partnerships, now and in the future.

ROBERT KOLÁŘDIRECTOR, ACADEMY OF CLASSICAL MUSIC,THE ORGANIZER OF THE DVOŘÁK PRAGUE INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL

Dear Friends,Having assumed the duties of the artistic director, I found this year’s edition of the Dvořák Prague festival an extraordinarily exciting experience.

From the festival’s overture concert staged in the chapel of the Lužany Chateau, to Verdi’s Requiem superbly conducted by Fabio Luisi in the St. Vitus Cathedral, all the way to the unforgettable closing concert which featured Rafał Blechacz’s performance in Prague’s Rudolfi num, the Dvořák Prague festival was a joyful celebration of music written by the most famous of Czech composers, accompanied, despite less than favorable weather, by the unmistakably festive atmosphere of a grand event.

The festival has come a long way since it was established no more than six years ago. Creating a festival in the Czech capital to celebrate Dvořák’s legacy is a highly laudable achievement, and I consider it an honor to be able to continue in the footsteps of the event’s founders with a view to developing Dvořák Prague to its full potential.

For many weeks now, the festival team has been busy preparing next year’s edition and making plans for subsequent years. Moreover, 2014 will be the Year of Czech Music, providing us with an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that Dvořák Prague is indeed a “new world among festivals”, an event that is purely Czech albeit undeniably world class.

Looking forward to seeing you again in 2014.

Dvořák Prague

The DVOŘÁK PRAGUE FESTIVAL is not only a celebration of the musical genius of Antonín Dvořák, the world’s most acclaimed Czech composer, but also an important social event. It is a showcase of outstanding performers, conductors, and world famous orchestras and chamber ensembles who congregate in Prague to present Dvořák’s music as well as works by other celebrated composers to the international audience of the Czech capital.

Since its inception, the festival has built its renown on the incontestable, time-proven quality of Dvořák’s works. The event has fi lled one of the last white spots on the map of today’s cultural world. In fact, it is astonishing that there had been no large festival celebrating Antonín Dvořák’s phenomenal creations, both through his own works and in the context of music written by other composers.

Despite its young age, Dvořák Prague is one of the two most popular classical music festivals in the Czech Republic. During 2008-2013, the event has hosted no fewer than 109 concerts, attracting over 80,000 listeners. The long list of musicians

who have brought masterful performances to Prague’s audience includes Dmitri Hvorostovsky (vocal), Joseph Calleja (vocal), Marina Rebeca (vocal), Adam Plachetka (vocal), Maria Joao Pires (piano), Piotr Anderzsewski (piano), Anna Vinnitskaya (piano), Boris Berezovsky (piano), Jean Yves Thibaudet (piano), Evgeny Kissin (piano), Arabella Steinbacher (violin), Nicola Benedetti (violin), Midori Gotó (violin), Janine Jansen (violin), Julian Rachlin (violin), Gautier Capucon (cello), Truls Mork (cello), Sol Gabetta (cello), Alisa Weilerstein (cello), Daniele Gatti (conductor), Andris Nelsons (conductor), Paavo Järvi (conductor), Daniel Harding (conductor), Yannick Nézet-Séguin (conductor), Sir John Eliot Gardiner (conductor), Zubin Mehta (conductor), Fabio Luisi (conductor), Orchestre National de France, Philharmonia Orchestra London, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Emerson String Quartet, Tokyo String Quartet, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Filarmonica della Scala, Kammerorchester Basel, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Czech Philharmonic, and others.

The 2013 Edition at a Glance

The sixth edition of the Dvořák Prague held during 8-20 September 2013 was a magnifi cent event in which world-acclaimed orchestras and soloists paid tribute to the most famous artist in the history of the Czech lands.

“Magic sounds and timbres … Since the beginning of the festival,

Dvořák’s music resounded at just about all concerts, reaffi rming that its unmitigated

accessibility, masterful form, and international acclaim make it one of the most delightful commodities Czech culture has to offer.”

7The festival got underway in the chapel of the Lužany

Chateau on 8 September, the day of Dvořák’s 172nd birthday, by a performance of the composer’s Lužany Mass in D major. Dvořák wrote the composition for his friend and benefactor Josef Hlávka on the occasion of the consecra-tion of a chapel on the Hlávka family estate. The work was performed by Ensemble Inégal, a leading Czech orchestra led by music director Adam Viktora. The concert was intro-duced by the American musicologist and Dvořák researcher David R. Beveridge who spoke about the circumstances under which this remarkable composition was created. The performance of the Lužany Mass marked the launch of a new series entitled “Following the Footsteps of Antonín Dvořák”, created with the aim to take listeners to places intimately intertwined with the master’s music.

The festival’s overture in Lužany was followed by the opening concert in the Rudolfi num on Tuesday 10 September. The event featured Dvořák’s famous Cello Concerto in B minor performed by American cellist Alisa Weilerstein accompanied by the Czech Philharmonic con-ducted by Jiří Bělohlávek. Other compositions played on the opening night included Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 and, most notably, Symphony No. 3 by the legend of musical avant-garde Krzysztof Penderecki, who is celebrating his 80th birthday this year and who personally attended the fes-tival’s opening concert. The Czech Philharmonic performed the Adagio movement in a world premiere of a string ar-rangement commissioned for the orchestra. The concert was broadcast live on the CT Art channel.

Apart from the opening performance, the Czech Philharmonic – closely tied to the festival by its history, as its fi rst ever concert was conducted by Dvořák himself – prepared an additional two extraordinary musical evenings. On the second occasion, the orchestra joined forces with the Prague Philharmonic Choir and star soloists to perform Verdi’s Requiem in the St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Cas-tle on 15 September. Conducting duties were assumed by Fabio Luisi, the Grammy Award-winning Principal Conductor of the Metropolitan Opera, Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony, and General Music Director of the Zurich Opera. Solo vocal parts were performed by soprano Evelina Dobratcheva, Romanian mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose, Italian tenor Massimo Giordano, and up-and-coming Czech bass Jan Martiník. The third performance by the festival’s resident orchestra was staged in the Rudolfi num on Wednes-day 18 September, where the ensemble accompanied Julian Rachlin, a virtuoso violinist and an excellent viola player who performed doubled duty as the conductor, under-scoring his rising reputation of a respected music director.

The festival program included a host of renowned orchestras from abroad: Kammerorchester Basel, the pre-ferred choice of such musical celebrities as Cecilia Bartoli,

Magdalena Kožená, and Andreas Scholl, accompanied the virtuoso German violinist Christian Tetzlaff who performed a Beethoven concerto on 16 September. The Beijing Sympho-ny Orchestra brought a program comprising two of Dvořák’s less known symphonies, No. 3 and 4, as part of the or-chestra’s tour of Europe’s most prestigious concert halls.

In the Recital series, festivalgoers were treated on 12 September to a performance by Evgeny Kissin, a phenomenal pianist of Russian origin. The concert featured a brand new repertoire consisting of works composed by Franz Schubert and Alexander Scriabin. Owing to his superb technique and expressive musicianship, Kissin’s performances come close to absolute musical perfection. Another artist who joined the festival was Adam Plachetka, an accomplished bass-baritone who is one of the few Czech vocalists who have made a distinct mark on the internation-al scene. In a concert held on 17 September, Plachetka, who is a Vienna State Opera soloist, performed works that included Dvořák’s Gypsy Songs. He was accompanied by the prominent British pianist Gary Matthewman.

In addition to vocalists, the recital program featured a fi ne selection of instrumentalists, including cellist Alisa Weil-erstein and violinist Julian Rachlin. The day after their Ru-dolfi num concert with the Czech Philharmonic, they moved to the Prague Crossroads whose intimate setting allowed their virtuosity to shine in solo recitals. Backed by pianist Ivo Kahánek, Alisa Weilerstein explored works composed by Antonín Dvořák, Johannes Brahms, and Fryderyk Chopin, while Julian Rachlin switched between violin and viola in a program featuring compositions by Brahms, Dvořák, and Cézar Franck.

The fi nal concert on Friday 20 September marked the end of the festival marathon with an audience-thrilling rendition of Schumann’s Piano Concerto. Featuring Polish pianist Rafał Blechacz, the composition was performed by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under the baton of Cornelius Meister. An interesting counterpoint to Penderecki’s composition presented in the opening concert was David Philip Hefti’s composition Changements. Dvořák Prague 2013 reached its fi nale with the unmistakable sound of Dvořák’s New World Symphony, which has been performed – together with the master’s Cello Concerto – since the festival’s fi rst edition on the most festive occasions, usually in the opening or closing concert.

The Debut series, intended to outline the future paths of music, showcased talented representatives of the youngest generation from various parts of the world. The Concert Hall of the Prague Conservatory hosted a performance by Esther Yoo, an American violinist of Korean ancestry whose virtuos-ity has drawn praise from the French newspaper Le Repub-lican: “Her tones fl oated through the hall like a dream, and

Page 8: Dvořákova Praha 2013 - Závěrečná zpráva EN

8it would not be presumptuous to consider the personality of this young virtuoso as a 21st century David Oistrakh...”. Oth-er performers included Belarusian cellist Ivan Karizna, who has been compared by critics to Rostropovich in his young years, and Denis Kozhuchin, a 27-year old Russian pianist who has already conquered such world-famous venues as Carnegie Hall in New York and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

Building on the concept of family concerts featured in the preceding two editions, the festival introduced a Family Day dedicated to both children and parents. Held on Sat-urday 14 September, the event offered two performances for the youngest listeners, an open-air concert, a workshop where children could make their own book about Antonín Dvořák, and a theater performance in a park. The event took place at the Prague Conservatory, where Dvořák worked as the director, in a park on Alšovo Embankment, and in the Rudolfi num. The Family Day was concluded by a lecture given by Dvořák researcher David R. Beveridge – The Unknown Antonín Dvořák. The entire event was hosted by Czech Television’s Jiří Václavek.

The festival aims to appeal not only to Dvořák afi ciona-dos and lovers of classical music; apart from showcasing young artists, Dvořák Prague also pays close attention to the young listeners. As in previous years, the Youth Club offered discounts on tickets and a rich program that includ-ed meetings with artists. The festival approached young listeners through a distinctive street art campaign entitled “Classical Music Is Fun”.

Added as a new feature in the life of the festival were meetings after the applause. No fewer than four of them were organized for listeners. On three occasions, performers met with students attending debut concerts at the Prague Conservatory. Additionally, Czech bass-baritone Adam Plachetka met with his fans during the main program.

As in previous years, the venues that hosted performanc-es during the festival’s 2013 edition included the Dvořák Hall at the Rudolfi num, the St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Con-cert Hall of the Prague Conservatory. There was one new addition – the Prague Crossroads (St. Anna Church).

Tickets for all festival concerts were distributed through the Dvořák Prague Ticket Center, the Rudolfi num Ticket Offi ce, the Perfect System and Ticketpro networks, branches of the Fischer Travel Agency, and the Sazka Ticket network. In addition, tickets could be purchased online at www.dvorakovapraha.cz.

Dvořák Prague is a member of the Czech Association of Music Festivals.

In the main program, 88% of all tickets were sold, and fi ve concerts were com-pletely sold out. The festival attracted close to 12 thousand listeners. On six occasions, performers received standing ovations.

ON THE TRAIL OF ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK

“Dvořák’s spiritual message, which gradates dramatically in Credo,

resonates in joyful exclamations in Sanctus, and comes to a conclusion in the quiet choral implorations of Dona nobis pacem in Agnus Dei, reverberated with exceptional depth and

force in Ensemble Inégal’s performance in the twilight of the park in front of the chateau. Such extraordinary moments

are impossible to forget.”Lidové noviny, 23 September 2013

Presented by the Scholz & Friends agency, the commu-nication concept selected to accompany this year’s edi-tion of the Dvořák Prague festival was entitled “THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN REPLACE A SYMBOL”. The concept was used throughout the media campaign and in all printed materials, relying on delicately rendered black-and-white feature photographs complemented by red musical symbols, such as the bass clef or the rest sign. Another original concept was the “Classical Music Is Fun” scheme designed by the VCCP Prague agency to promote the Dvořák Prague Youth Club.

The main part of the communication campaign was divided into two stages. The fi rst, which part took place in the spring of 2013, involved publishing the festival program and launching the sale of advance tick-ets. The second, executed in August and Septem-ber 2013, focused on presenting individual concerts

and star performers. In addition, there was a parallel communication campaign for the Youth Club in August and September 2013.

Czech Television and Czech Radio, the festival’s long-standing media partners, were joined by the MF DNES daily and the iDNES.cz news portal. Another new addition to the ranks of media partners was the Refl ex weekly, which joined The Prague Post and Opera PLUS, an information portal specializing in opera, music, and dance.

Selected concerts received media support from Česká informační agentura.

The overall list-price cost of the campaign amounted to approximately ten million crowns.

A specifi c communication campaign, which mainly relied on street art, was prepared under the name “Classical Music Is Fun” to increase the festival’s appeal to the young generation of listeners. During August, pink and black motifs, featuring artistically exaggerated depictions of classical music greats, appeared in the streets of Prague. Apart from Dvořák himself, the campaign featured Johan Sebastian Bach, Bedřich Smetana, Gustav Mahler, and Wolfgang Ama-deus Mozart.

The campaign also relied on viral marketing – videos from the painting of individual fi gures were posted on YouTube, and pictures and thematic posts were pub-lished on the festival’s Facebook profi le.

In September, the campaign continued by the installa-tion of Antonín Dvořák’s CLASSICBOOK, a nine-meter interactive wall erected in front of the Rudolfi num build-ing and connected to the Dvořák Prague Facebook profi le.

The concept was created by the VCCP Prague agency, which used this opportunity to join the ranks of the festival’s supporters.

“Baritone Adam Plachetka, a successful performer with the Vienna State Opera, did not lag behind his reputation in Prague. Although he may have fared somewhat better singing Italian arias than Dvořák’s

songs, his performance in the recital clearly showed that he is a Czech

whose name will be heard, not only in theaters, but also on concert stages

worldwide.”Hospodářské noviny, 23 September 2013

“Plachetka’s singing was brilliant. The audience’s excitement in the

sold-out Rudolfi num further gradated during an encore that featured the

Champagne Aria from Don Giovanni.”

“Some three minutes worth of superbly performed beautiful music: waltz by

this that make organizing festivals and attending concerts thereat worthwhile.”
