President’s Cast
Hello Everyone. I hope this letter finds you well. I am very proud of us as a club! We keep diligently pursuing our purpose and being successful. Thanks again to all of the organizers and participants of our annual Christmas party at Georgine’s. We beat
last year’s fund raising and last year was a record year. I guarantee the money will be put to good use efficiently and effectively by having innovative educational fishing programs and by booking the best speakers we can find. We’re doing well so far. Thanks to our own Jerry Coviello for the innovation upbeat program last month. I personally have those destinations on my bucket list and Jerry’s presentation helped to familiarize me with those places. I definitely have a better idea of what to expect when I get there. He didn’t want me to mention it but Jerry didn’t charge us for the talk. I tried to have him accept payment but he refused. I thank him for this as it will let us use the money again for another speaker. We’re doing things like no one else and on a very modest budget. I heard that several other clubs are requesting presentations from Jerry and it looks like his outdoor writing career is taking off. Let’s wish him well as we watch him blast off! I’ve been working on the fly tying class. I’ve put a lot of thought into it. The one thing I thought about was that with the exception of a relatively small cadre of individuals the east coast is lagging behind our west coast counterparts in the nymphing arena. Like it or not too bad. Don’t worry I’m here to change all that, haha!
I’ve put together a collection of nymphs that will give you the best box of ammo a nympher can have. The focus will be on the broad middle
section of the study. Nymphs in sizes 14-18 will be where most of the action will occur. The larger (anchor flies) and smaller (off the dropper flies) will be covered later.
When looking for materials of course as always buy locally. However, it seems that lots of the materials needed for this contact style of nymphing are not available locally. Maybe that will change if local demand picks up. We are fortunate that a few western Pa fly shops are catering to this niche. Look to Competitive Angler, Holsinger’s and Performance flies. Also, there are several western fly shops that carry the goods. Fly Fish Food, Bob Marriot’s, Blue Ribbon Flies, the Caddis Fly Shop, Ed’s Fly Shop, the Fly Shop. There are a bunch of good ones. Forgive me if I left some out. For beads I have found the Wholesale Fly Comany. They have been good and inexpensive too. They are located in Pa. If you don’t shop on EBay you are really missing out! Lots of materials can be found there. Often times you will discover a new preferred vender. If you do than by all means start ordering direct. Don’t forget about kraft stores and dollar stores. Some things are purchased there, eg. Embroidery floss, sulky and pearl balloon ribbon. Big reminder, get your UV resin before the class!
About the selection of flies, some are venerable now old patterns. These include Cal Bird’s Birdnest, Gary Borger’s Red Brown Nymph, and Dave Whitlock’s Red Fox Squirrel Hair Nymph. They have been somewhat modernized for contact nymphing but they are still super hot fish catchers. Look out for Walt’s Worm and all of his sexy and dead sexy offspring. Lots of the patterns are relatively new and they come from all over. Lloyd Struthers’ double hot Spot green pheasant tail comes from New Zealand. The Pink Squirrel comes from the Driftless Region where Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota come together. I’ve fished there when I lived in Iowa and I’m a big Pink Squirrel fan. Wi. for the best Pink Squirrel Nymph blend. Did you ever hear of Lance Egan? Lance is a rock star in the nymphing world He is from Utah and several of his patterns along with a few of the variations are from that area. Many are contributions are from our competitive angling world. The Frenchie, Black Frenchie and France Fly are prime examples. Some are proven guide flies like Spencer Higa’s SOS. Our local region of Pennsylvania and New Jersey is well represented with flies from Tim Flagler, myself and a true up and comer Jeromy Haast. My humble contribution the Chartreuse Liberace is really killing it in Pocono waters. Just ask Buddy at the Evening Hatch fly shop. The embroidery floss is a little hard to find but look to EBay if the craft stores are all out. You don’t realize it yet but you’re going to be “over the moon thrilled” to have a few patterns by Jeremy Haast in your fly box. He is an artist and nympher extraordinaire from the Lehigh Valley area. He spends lots of time on the water developing his own personal patterns that are killers here in Pa. We’ll be tying two of his proven killer patterns. Wow, talk about secret weapons! Oh boy am I excited! I’m an alumni of George Maciag’s Fly Tying
course at LL Bean’s in Center Valley. His course lasts 35 weeks and starts with a Green Winnie and finishes with a woven stone fly. When you complete his course there should not be a fly you can not tie! I highly recommend taking the course if you can. I valued it so much I didn’t miss a class. I’m still waiting for my perfect attendance certificate from George. Anyway, I plan to conduct my tying courses in the same manner as George does his. I pledge to have pattern write ups for each pattern. They will list the pattern, originator, give instructions and give some provenance and fishing tips for the pattern. Students will be able to use these in a three ring binder for future reference. During the classes I will recruit experienced Tyers to mingle and provide assistance to students. I think that about covers the course preview. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me. I encourage all levels of fly Tyers to participate as the patterns are really not too difficult to tie. Come join us for some killer fly tying. As always Tight Lines and Happy Tying.

Bob Romano lives with his wife, Trish, and their two Labrador
retrievers, Winslow Homer and Finnegan, in rural northwestern New
Jersey. The family owns a small cabin on a wilderness lake in western
Maine where they spend much of their free time. Bob is a member
of the Outdoor Writers Association of America and the New England
Outdoor Writers Association. Trish and the couple’s daughter, Emily
Rose, provide artwork for Bob’s books and magazine articles as well
as proofread his books. Trish also puts up with his antics and takes
photographs of the great outdoors
New Book THE RIVER KING,
Bob Romano returns to western Maine, but this time with a cast of new characters. From an
early age, Harry Duncan gravitated toward his grandfather and great uncle, men who learned
to fly fish on the highland rivers of their Scottish homeland. While Harry’s parents struggle
against their demons, the two older men generously impart their knowledge of western
Maine’s lakes, ponds and streams to the young boy
Born out of wedlock, Thelma Louise Shannon, Harry’s “friend-with-benefits,” works behind
the bar at Sparky’s Tavern while dreaming of the day she’ll leave behind the tannin-stained
ponds and sun-speckled streams that Harry has grown to love.
Donnie Gilroy is obsessed with catching a brook trout as big as the
one he lost as a young boy on account of two anglers “from away.”
This leads Harry’s best friend to declare war on anyone fishing his
home waters, a war that eventually impacts his life and the lives of his
friends in ways they never imagined.
Known as Petey Boy to his friends, Peter Jordan’s mind has never
caught up with his body. As a result, Harry, Donnie, and Thelma
Louise must protect the young man with special needs from the
outside world, at least until now.

Advanced Fly Tying Course Confidence Nymphs Instructor Jack Walsh
These are popular proven flies that are to by used in contact and suspension nymphing. I plan to conduct the
course in the format I learned when I took George Maciag’s. Course at LL Bean. George has an easy
format. At the beginning of each class George hands out the pattern write-up for the fly to be tied. He ties
the fly while the students watch then the students sit down at their vices and tie the fly. George and helpers
attend to questions along the way. I plan to tie at least three different patterns each class. This pattern list is
provided in order for interested parties to purchase materials prior to the class. I endeavored to provide the
original pattern of each fly. In individual cases there may be a less expensive hook alternative. Feel free to
substitute but please stick to pattern hook type. Eg, if the pattern was originally tied on a scud hook then use
a scud hook, if originally tied in a nymph hook then use a nymph hook. Use tungsten beads they are heavier
and we want weight. I will also be using lead wire wraps. Buy your UV cement ahead of time. Bondic makes
an inexpensive unit which is good for coating wing cases. I have decided to use Solarez. It will dry and stay
clear.
I usually buy from several preferred vendors. Look to EBay for materials, also Holsingers, Competitive
Angler, Performance Flies, J Stockard, Fly Fish Food, Tactical Fly Fishing, the Wholesale Fly Co. for beads. Of
course use local fly shops and craft stores. There are a few materials that are hard to find but most things
are attainable. Look to craft stores and EBay for embroidery floss. Melanistic pheasant tails can be bought
from Steve Cooper at Cookshill. If you want it you’ll find it Just remember, our great art is at times an
adventure quest scavenger hunt. Have fun with it. Remind me to tell you the story about how I obtained the
fur from the back of a gray squirrel.
