Easter Term

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Welcome back to Easter term!

Here at the Durham Union Society

we’ve been working hard to put

together an interesting, engaging

and fun term.

Our debates cover a wide variety of

topical issues, with influential,

charismatic speakers on both sides

of the House.

We have also worked hard to ensure

numerous high quality addresses

with a range of speakers, including Rick Edwards,

Gemma Collis and the Speaker of the House of Lords.

Regarding Socials taking place this term, we have a

variety of themes and styles; from the Puppy Petting

exam stress buster to the much anticipated Summer

Garden Party, celebrating 50 years of the Society ’s bar,

the 24 North Bailey Club.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Easter term, and

my hope that you are looking forward to it as much as I

am! Have a fantastic term, and I look forward to seeing

you in the coming weeks. Enjoy!

Gemma Collis is a GB Wheelchair Fencer,

London 2012 Paralympian and two time World Cup

Medallist. She was a London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer

and served as an Ambassador for Buckinghamshire at the

Sochi Winter Paralympics.

Having been spotted by the GB Head Coach, within 3

months she was selected for her first senior

international, and ten months after first picking up a

sword competed at the London 2012 Paralympics, where

she finished 8th in the Women’s Team Epee.

Since London 2012 Gemma has suffered from a series of

injuries and a serious illness which saw her hospitalised

for several months and resulted in her having to take a

year out of the sport. However, only six months

following her return to training Gemma won her first

World Cup medal, narrowly losing 15-14 to the 7-time

Paralympic Champion Yu Chui Yee. She has since

followed this up with World Cup Bronze in Hungary in

November 2014 and currently lies 4th in the World in

terms of qualification for Rio.

Alongside training full-time and studying, Gemma works

as an athlete mentor in schools. Her role involves working

with young people, particularly the disengaged and disaf-

fected, using sport as a hook to teach life skills that will

enable them to achieve their potential.

Baroness D’Souza was elected as the House of

Lords’ second Lord Speaker in 2011. Lord Speakers can

sit for two terms only, which last a maximum of five

years each, and are elected internally by Members of the

House of Lords. They must be politically impartial.

Responsibilities of the Lord Speaker include chairing the

Lords debating chamber, offering advice on procedure,

speaking for the House on ceremonial occasions, and

acting as an ambassador for the work of the Lords both

at home and abroad.

Baroness D’Souza was created a life peer of Wychwood

in the County of Oxfordshire in July 2004. She sat as a

Crossbencher in the House of Lords, where she was the

Convenor of the Crossbench Peers.

Before her work in the House of Lords, she worked for

the Nuffield Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human

Nutrition, Oxford Polytechnic, and was an independent

research consultant for the United Nations. In 1999 she

was invested as a Companion of the Order of St Michael

and St George.

She will come to speak on the importance and function

of the House of Lords.

The Durham Union Society is one of the most

famous institutions in the world for competitive de-

bating. At the recent World Championships our

Durham A team was ranked 9th in the world, and at

the recent European Championships 2 Durham teams

reached the 1/4 finals, including a fresher-team, mak-

ing them the highest ranked fresher team in Europe.

Debating is an incredibly fun and intellectually

stimulating activity that significantly helps develop

analytical and public speaking skills, as well as one ’s

knowledge of current affairs. This is reflected by the

wide range of interesting careers that Durham-alumni

who debated at university now have. Most weekends,

there are competitions hosted by different universities

across the UK that we send teams to; we pay for 100%

of your registration and 100% of your travel costs to

ensure that debating is as accessible as possible.

We have three debating streams: Novice, Intermediate

and Advanced Debating Practice. Whilst they don ’t

run in Easter term due to exams, please contact

[email protected] if you w ould like to join

Durham Debating, and we will ensure that you are on

the mailing list for Michaelmas Term 2015.

- 30 -

Page 31: DUS Easter Termcard

Coming up this term, we have a number of exciting

internal debating opportunities: the Robson Cup is

only for Durham Union Society members, and is held

to find the best debater in the Durham Union Society.

Even if you have little experience, come along as it

will be a really fun day after exams.

Similarly, the Inaugural Pro-Am Cup w i l l s e e m o r e

experienced debaters paired with less experienced

debaters, to find the best team; this is a fantastic

opportunity for those who want to get involved in

debating to learn from some of Durham ’s top

debaters.

We also have the Fieldfisher Durham Open which will

be on 13-14 June 2015, which is a competition that the

Durham Union Society hosts, so if you ’re able to come

along to help, it would be great to see you there!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to

contact me at [email protected]
