  September 2013 — The Durham Skywriter 5

Water has played a signicant role in my lie this past month. Firsto, I’m sitting here typing with my let leg elevated and dripping

water rom an ice pack that’s balanced on my knee. I took a nasty

all while walking on S Alston Ave—just our days into my morn-

ing walking regimen. I decided that, ater caring or my aunt and

ignoring my previous liestyle o bikeriding and walking almost

everywhere (when still living in Chicago), I needed to get my body

up and moving again. I eel ridiculous, not being able to walk ater

telling almost everybody I know that I’m “getting my health back

on track.” I know that this could have happened to anyone, so

I’m not going to beat mysel up. But it’s almost unny. I nd my-sel thinking: See, that’s what happens when you move to a town

where you have to drive everywhere. Have I actually orgotten how

 to walk?

Publisher’s pitch

The month started with water dripping rom the underside o my1992 Mazda van. My mechanic has already replaced a couple o

hose sections as leaks are discovered. I’m starting to think that

the hoses are so old that leaks will continue springing until they’re

all replaced. Still working on that. And a bit more than a week

ago, I was deejaying in Durham Central Park during the Food Truck

Rodeo. It was a blast, as usual, but I paid dearly or my blasé

attitude toward the weather. I saw that the sun was out and didn’t

bother to check the weather report. So what happened? You

guessed it—I got rained on and my computer got wet. My track

pad shorted out and I lost a week o work. This month’s Skywriteis late, but I’m still proud to present it to you. Whew. Have a great

month—and stay dry whatever you do. :)

Funny jokesof the

month

Naomi: Wow, I heard that the

new dress code at your

school is the most strict

in history.

amber:You heard right. In fact, our dress code is so

strict, three teachers had

to stay for detention

after school today.

Teacher: Sarah, if you had 10

dollars and asked your

mom for 10, how

many would you

have?

Sarah: I would have 10

dollars, and she might

tell me to give herthose!

Say this tongue twister

three times fast:

Six crisp snacks.

We love funny jokes andriddles! Send us one—if we

use it, you’ll win a prize!

4-H Clubs 4-H Clubs have been around for

years and years. Many people

remember 4-H-Club kids compet-

ing for ribbons at the State Fair

with their cow,s bulls, horses, etc.

But 4-H Clubs have expanded

and now serve both city and ru-

ral kids. 4-H is all about having

fun while learning new things.

Durham County has several 4-H

Clubs, and they meet at the NC

County Extension Ofce (721 Fos-

ter St). If any of these clubs sound

interesting to you, ask your folks

if you can join—they’re always

looking for new members! (You

can even start your own club if

you want.)

• 4-H Rabbit Club (ages 5–18)• Durham County Meat Goat

4-H Club (ages 9–18)

• Durham County Envirothon

4-H Club (grades 5–12)

• Turning Kids Around 4-H

 Afterschool Club (ages 5–10)

• DOVE Bicycle 4-H Club

(ages 11–14)

• Grove Park 4-H Club (ages

8–18)

• 4-H Computer Workshop

(ages 12–18).

Have your folks contact Carlos

Moses at 919-560-8295 or carlos_

[email protected].

Tic-Tac-Toe Make your own tic-tac-toe board

by starting with a nice-sized oor

tile. It can be a square tile that’s

6 inches x 6 inches or any size

you can get. If you have an extra

one lying around the house, then

maybe you can buy one from a

home-improvement store like

Lowe’s or Home Depot for 1 or 2

dollars.

What you want to do is to make

nine equal squares, and the best

way to do that is with two ver-

tical and two horizontal lines

with magic markers or puffy fab-

ric pens. Then, use bottle caps,

rocks, or other small objects for

game pieces and you’re set to go!

I slipped this CD into my laptop and within 5 seconds Iwas intrigued. Then Ms Arrington came in at 0:09 … andthen the harmonic background vocals … and that didit for me. The musicianship is topnotch—the band laysdown lush musical beds with nice funky grooves, whileMs Arrington artfully speaks her mind with conviction.

This must have been fun to record, and fans of funk, jazz, and neosoul will denitely like this. The musical arrange- ments are by Victor Moore with horn arrangements by AlStrong. Check out the jazzy updates of Everybody Wants

to Rule the World, Feelings, and Control .
