Since 1987, DURASLOT® surfacedrains have been providing reliablestorm water collection in applicationsranging from residential driveways tomulti-lane super highways.

The product is made from double-wallcorrugated polyethylene pipe with analuminum slot mounted on top. It isdesigned to intercept sheet flowsacross paved or cleared areas, or asit collects in low spots. It is a cost-effective substitute for corrugatedsteel slotted drains, precast trenchdrains, or cast-in-place trench drainswith steel or cast iron grates.

DURASLOT drains use N-12® pipe, manufactured by Advanced DrainageSystems. An outer corrugated wallprovides strength and durability, whilethe smooth interior lining givesexceptional hydraulics. ADS is theexclusive sales agent for DURASLOTdrains.

DURASLOT drains are linear drainsdesigned to capture sheet flow ofwater from sloping paved surfaces orcleared areas. They have the sameinlet as corrugated steel pipe slotteddrains. A 1 3/4” wide opening runsthe length of the pipe, and specialconnectors provide for a continuousslot of virtually unlimited length. Forcurb and gutter applications, the inletacts as an orifice, and the AISIHandbook* method can be used todetermine hydraulic capacity.

For interception of sheet flow, theinlet acts as a weir. Testing done bythe FWHA concluded that for inletsas narrow as one inch wide virtuallyall of a flow of 0.04 cfs per foot ofinlet could be intercepted under mostdesign conditions. Testing commis-sioned by the manufacturer confirmedthis, and also developed “rule ofthumb” capacities for 1 3/4” wide slotswith and without grating:

1 3/4” open top slot => .065 cfs per foot of inlet

1 3/4” slot with grate => .046 cfs perfoot of inlet

Typical applications for DURASLOTdrains include the following:

• Roadways

• Sidewalks

• Parking lots

• Plazas

• Loading docks

• Industrial floors

• Parks and athletic fields

DURASLOT surface drains offer anumber of cost and performance ben-efits compared to corrugated metal, polymer trench drain and cast-in-place systems:

• Corrosion-resistant polyethyleneand aluminum construction is impervi-ous to soil acids, storm water contam-inants, and road salt.

• Greater hydraulic efficiency. Theflow in smooth inner wall N-12 pipe issuperior to corrugated steel pipe.

• Lower installation costs. Light-weight sections set in place quicklyand easily with no heavy machineryor extra manpower.

• Material cost is less than othersystems which can support vehiculartraffic.

• Long ten-foot lengths versus theshort one meter lengths of polymertrench drain. Speeds installation timeand makes it much easier to maintaina flat or constant slope invert.

• Impact-resistant polyethylene with-stands bumps during shipment, stor-age and handling. No waste due todeformation or breakage.

Competitive Benefits

Heavy equipment is not required to set DURASLOT drains in place. Long, lightweightsections and easy-to-use coupler bands cut installation time significantly.

Smooth inner wall N-12 pipe resistschemical attack and provides superior hydraulic flow compared tocorrugated steel pipe.

Variable height slot DURASLOT drains can be ordered in sequentially numbered sections with maximum slot heights exceeding 30”.

Variable Height SlotIn addition to the standard fixed slotheight style, DURASLOT drains areavailable with a variable height slot topermit slope in the pipe invert whengrade is level. The standard change inslot height is 5/8” per 10-ft. length (H2minus H1 in drawing) nominally a1/2% slope. Other slopes are alsoavailable. The product is delivered insequentially numbered sections. Slotheights of more than 30” have beeninstalled. Contact ADS for completeproduct and installation details.

DURASLOT surface drains are madefrom a flexible conduit which isdesigned to attain its structuralstrength utilizing ring compressionderived from soil pressure. For this tooccur, a minimum cover height of 12”is typically required with N-12 pipe. This cannot be achieved withDURASLOT drains because the topsof the 2 1/2” or 6” slots must be set atgrade. Therefore, the drain must bebackfilled with a certain amount ofconcrete to support the pipe and pro-vide a non-eroding surface at the topof the slot where water enters theinlet.

The depth of concrete backfilldepends on the traffic load over theDURASLOT drain installation:

• Heavy traffic. Completely sur-rounded by concrete for critical load-ing applications such as frequent

H-25 traffic on a highway. The S andB dimensions are typically 3” to 6”depending on specific project condi-tions (design layout, traffic patterns, soil properties, etc.).

• Moderate traffic. Surrounded byconcrete to below the center of thepipe. Used where vehicular traffic is

moderate (retail parking lots, drive-ways, against curbs, etc.),

• Residential/pedestrian traffic.Concrete, asphalt, or soil concreteslab at grade for non-vehicular

installations (patios, sidewalks, against foundations, landscapingprojects, etc.).

Installation Notes1. DURASLOT drains may be set andsecured in place using one of the fol-lowing methods:

a. Hung from cross members on grade

b. Set in a cradle made of rebar or wood

c. Set in the trench bottom (not for H-25 loading)

2. Cover the slot opening to preventclogging with poured concrete orasphalt. The easiest way to protectthe slot is to cover it with 2” ducttape. An alternate method is to placea 2 x 4 on the 2” edge on top of theslot.

3. When pouring concrete aroundDURASLOTdrains, especially when

the pipe is sitting in a cradle, pourdown on the spot where the slotmeets the pipe (X), taking care tokeep the slot upright. This will providesome downward force (D) that willkeep the pipe from rising due toupward force (F) as the concrete fillsthe trench.

4. Recess. The top of the slot open-ing should always be set 1/8” to 1/4”below finished grade. This allows sur-face runoff to enter the inlet efficientlyand protects the grate and flangesfrom snowplows and the like. Amason’s tool can be used to roundthe edge after the protective tape or 2 x 4 is removed from the slot open-ing.

5. DURASLOT drains are designed asa system, and it is important that all fit-tings and hardware are used duringinstallation. Grate connectors andanchors keep the grate in tension andtie the ends of the grate into the con-crete or asphalt. Anchors and end capsor adapters should always be used atthe end of a run. Use only DURASLOTcoupler bands to join sections ofDURASLOT drain (see page 2).

Installation Basics

Interstate Highway MedianFor a construction project on I-87 inWestchester County, New York, atotal of about two miles of drainagelines were required for the temporarycrossovers in the highway median. Inthe past, corrugated metal slot drainhad always been specified for thistype of project, but in this instance,Duraslot was accepted as a substi-tute.

New York DOT and Thruway Authorityofficials were persuaded thatDURASLOT drains could not onlyprovide the same structural strengthas metal, but the plastic pipe’s supe-rior hydraulics would create betterflow in this extremely flat terrain. Theinstalling contractors appreciated theproduct’s lighter weight, and the easi-er and safer methods of connectingthe sections together.

More than 11,000 ft. of 15”DURASLOT drains were installed onthe project. Contractors estimatedthat installation time was reduced byat least 20%, saving not only projectcosts, but also the time traffic wouldbe backed up due to crossover con-struction.

Pedestrian ParkwayThe city of Pembroke Pines, Florida, was building a large new park withseveral athletic fields. Drainage wasrequired in the areas of heavy pedes-trian traffic, and corrugated metalslotted drain was originally specifiedfor this purpose.

After learning of the strength, superi-or flow, and corrosion resistance ofthe plastic alternative, the engineerchanged not only the surface drainspecification to DURASLOT, but alsothe remainder of undergrounddrainage to ADS N-12 pipe andNyloplast® catch basins.

A total of 1,540 ft. of DURASLOT 12”drain with a 2 1/2” slot height wereinstalled. Because no vehicular trafficwas involved, stone backfill could beused up to the springline of the pipe, with concrete installed to finishedgrade.

Entrance BoulevardOne of the first right-of-way plasticpipe installations allowed by the cityof Chula Vista, California, occurredon the entrance to the West CoastOlympic Training Facility in that city.

Traditionally, bituminous-coated steelslot drain was specified for municipalroadways, but engineers for this pro-ject decided to give DURASLOTdrains a try. More than 1,000 ft. of 18”DURASLOT drain were installed atthe curb to collect sheet flow from along sloping curve in the entranceboulevard.

The contractor was extremelypleased with the product, reportingthat it cost slightly less than metal, and was lighter in weight and muchcleaner to handle than the coatedsteel. Delivery time for DURASLOTdrains was noticeably quicker than forthe metal pipe, as was installationtime, due to the ease with which theplastic could be cut, set in place, andclamped together.
