    In the first picture one may see a series of the most

    common degradations like cracks,scaling of concrete surfaces

    due to freeze-thraw cycles, corroding steel and water

    infiltrations.

    The expansion of corroding steel creates tensile stresses in

    the concrete , which can cause cracking, delamination and

    spalling.

    On this slab we can see carbonation induced

    corrosion.

    This phenomenon often occurs on areas of building

    facades that are exposed to rainfall, shades fron sunlight

    and have low concrete cover over reinforcing steel.

    Carbonation is highly dependent on the relative

    humidity of the concrete.

    Here we have some cracks

    on the building faade due

    to settlements , poor joint

    construction ,weather

    conditions and/or self

    weight of the elements.

    Scaling of the concrete is

    This crack patern isassociated to the alkali-

    silica reaction or it may be

    because some aggregates

    absorb water and,upon

    freezing, expand to

    produce a popout.

    Reinforcement exposure due to weather conditions ,

    mechanical shock and/or freeze-thraw cycles.

    Flat fragments of concrete are detached from the concrete

    mass by the rebars corrosion and may fall down.

    At the base of the column

    we can see vegetation

    which means the water is

    frequently present

    ;because of it the concrete

    and plaster is also peeled.

    In this corner of the

    building , at its base we

    have water infiltration and

    cracks.

    Some aggregates react

    with the alkali- hydroxides

    in concrete causingexpansion and cracks over

    a period of years.
