PRAYER AND VISION
OUR THEMES FOR AUGUST
“Then the Lord answered me and said:
‘Write the vision and make it plain
on tablets, that he may run who reads it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time;
But at the end it will speak,
and it will not lie.
Though it tarries, wait for it;
because it will surely come,
It will not tarry. Habakkuk 2:2-3
There is a dream in the heart of God. It is a beautiful picture of what the Body
of Christ will look like here at Dunlap UMC in the near future. It is a picture of
people worshiping together, doing life together, and drawing the lost into our
Church family. What, more specifically does that dream look like? How do
we “live into” the destiny that He will lay before us?
These questions, and others, are to be the subject of our prayers in
the coming month. I am issuing a “Call to Prayer” for our entire congregation.
My desire, and the desire of our Church Leaders, is that we embrace God’s
vision for us in such a way that we will be unified in all our ministry tasks. We
want to all be “rowing in the same direction” as we move into the next “50
years on the Hill.”
This first step in the “visioning” process is 31 days of prayers for God’s
vision to be revealed. It will do us no good to strike out on our own ideas of
what this church will be. We need to know the heart of God, and to ask Him
to reveal his dream to us.
We will ask Him…”Who in our community, specifically, would you like
us to focus our attention on in order to share the Good News with them?” We
will ask Him to show us the best way we can make disciples and become
better followers ourselves. A prayer guide will be given to you on Sunday
morning in hopes that it will be used in your personal prayer time. It is hoped
that all who meet in the church, for whatever tasks, will take time to pray to-
gether for the lost in our community, and for God’s Vision to be revealed to
us.
Perhaps you can come 10 minutes early to the church and make use
of the Prayer room, the chapel, or the sanctuary. Let’s seek God together and
see what He will show us!

Thank you to my church family at Dunlap United
Methodist Church: your calls, visits, meals, and
many acts of kindness have meant the world tome
and have carried me through—once again.
I am wonderfully blessed with your friendships, and
I am grateful for each of you.
Love,
Martha Lou Reynolds
Thank you, Dunlap UMC, for the kind words cards,
and visitations at the death of my father. This is
what a church family is all about. A special thank
you to Pastor Leslie for the phone call and visitation
at the funeral home.

We need substitute Sunday School teachers. If you would be
willing to serve in this capacity, please contact Melissa Tibbs @
949-5920 or Pastor Leslie.
Wednesday Nights This Fall
Try to keep Wednesday nights free this fall to grow in your
knowledge of the Lord, and your discipleship! We hope to have
more than one small group study happening for you to choose from.
The Wednesday night program will begin on September 12, after
our covered dish meal.

Our August 19th, “50 Years on the Hill” celebration is getting close. Please join us
for a great event. The schedule is as follows:
9:30 a.m.— All Sunday school classes and interested individuals will meet in the sanc-
tuary as we turn back the clock to Sunday school of years ago. Mr. Howard Hatcher
will lead a brief devotion time, just as he did in 1968, when the microphone was
turned on for the first time in the new church. After the devotion, classes can meet,
or those present can participate in a time of fellowship with coffee and muffins.
10:30 a.m.—A special worship service has been planned. There will be an interview
with Mr. Gene Hixson, one of the original members of the building committee. He
has some interesting information to share. There will be special music by the choir,
lots of photos from the past, and Reverend Brent Hall will deliver the message.
Noon—A fellowship meal will follow the worship service. Don’t worry about bringing
a dish. The meal will be furnished. Enjoy the time visiting with familiar faces and
guests.
Please Note: There will be no 8:30 a.m. worship service.
Also, take a look at the photograph of the original Building Committee on Page 9 of
this newsletter. Can you name the members?

SPECIAL APPRECIATION
FOR JOHN KELL
John Kell was born and raised in Dunlap, Tennessee and has lived here all his life, with the exception of his college years at Tennessee Tech, 1973 to 1977, where he earned a degree in Wildlife Management (there’s a chuckle in there for his lifelong friends) and a two-year degree in Mechanical Engineering, then two years in active duty to the United States Army. After John graduated from college, he married Denise Dahnke and joined TVA’s Nuclear Power Plant Operator training program. He completed that training successfully and spent the next 21 years working with TVA in that capacity. In 2002, he joined the downtown Chattanooga office of TVA as a controller of supply and demand of electrical capacity in a seven-state area. After five years, he shifted to training new engineers for that task and finished out his career in 2017. He is now retired from TVA but is kept very busy working in the church, on his farm, and with Jack Talley at Talley Home Repairs. John has served Dunlap United Methodist Church in every capacity you can think of. Until this year, he was the Chairman of the Administrative Board. Presently, he serves as a Trustee and on the Lay Leadership Committee. He is a true jack-of-all-trades, and is called on weekly here at the church. We would be lost without his talents and willingness to serve. John and Denise have three children: Josh Kell (who passed away in 2008 and for whom annual Josh Kell Memorial Events are held from which funds go out in the form of scholarships, to support the Melanoma Cancer Society, and others in the community who suffer from cancer). Their two daughters are Kristi Falco and Sarah Duke, and they have three grandchildren: Thaxton, Dean and Kellan. They have been members of Dunlap UMC since 1998. Thanks, John, for your tireless service to Dunlap UMC.

DUMC CHILDREN
Bradley Mackey, Amilya Boyer, Owen Boyer and Brylee Dishman made pizzas on Kid’s Fun Day, July 17. They gave Margaret a small one for lunch (wow!) and a large one to take to Sonny! He reported that it was “Delicious!” Such talented youngsters!

More 5th Sunday participants: Left: Jeff Barger, who talked about Proverbs 3:5 & 6 and learning to trust in the
Lord.
Center: Jake Tibbs, who quoted Ephesians 6:10-18 and talked about Christians being empowered even more spectacularly than Superman (and then
unbuttoned to shirt to reveal his “true” identity!).
Right: Bert Esslinger, whose verses were John 15:11-12 where Christ commanded us to love one another and who then told an wonderful example of
how God causes us to see what we need to see, when we need to see it.
Z. T. Boyd brought tears to
more than one pair of eyes
on Fifth Sunday, playing a
beautiful rendition of
“Face to Face.” The
church gave him a standing ovation; he
thrilled all our hearts!

Institute comprised of large group sessions and a choice of workshops based on
desired learning. The dates this fall are September 26-28. Pastor Leslie and
Administrative Board Chair Melissa Tibbs will be attending this year along with

The United Methodist Women met on July 16th at the home of Martha Lou Reynolds and enjoyed a wonderful time of fellowship and a delicious meal. Their next meeting will be at the church on Monday,
Notes from Pastor Leslie:
The Administrative Counsel approved a motion to begin a Strategic Plan-
ning Process to order the ministries of our church and promote unity in Vision
and Purpose. The first step in this Process is 31 Days of Prayer. The 2nd Step
will e formation of a Vision & Planning Team that will help formulate the Vision
Statement. In the 3rd step, this Team will develop Goals for the next year, and
promote Action steps for the different areas of ministry in the church. Individ-
ual Ministries may also form goals based on the Church’s Vision Statement.
This team will be formed after the 31 days of prayer, based on nominations from
the Administrative Board members.
Prayer Meetings—Pastor Leslie will begin leading prayer meetings in the
Prayer Room beginning Wednesday Evenings at 5:30 throughout August. We
will have a short devotion on prayer, and then pray for our church and needs of
the community. All are encouraged to come!
Music Group—Instrumentalists and Singers are welcome to come and
practice with us on Thursday evenings at 6:00 at the church. This group pre-
pares songs to share on occasion and will provide support for the music program
in the 8:30 service. See Bob Daniels for Details.
The Dunlap United Methodist Men will be taking
youngsters to a Chattanooga Lookouts Baseball
game on August 24th. Stay tuned for more infor-
mation. This outing is always a big hit with our
young people and their parents. The UMM buys
the youngsters’ tickets and gives each one some
cash money to buy their hotdogs and treats. This
is a big deal!!
Contact Kurt Wissehr or Kenny Nix to sign up for
this outing! The next meeting of the UMM will be
August 26th at 8:30 a.m. at the church.
