£47.95"One’s first impulse to judge this wine simply for its novelty value, but that is to do it a disservice. Empirically, in the context of Chinese red wines, it is outstanding, but how does it stack upinterna�onally? Priced in line with, for example, a rela�vely serious red Bordeaux, there is plenty of Cabernet character, pure fruit, no earthiness, well-integrated oak and, most importantly ripetannins and a rewarding concentra�on. In a blind tas�ng of its Bordeaux peers, it would not be embarrassed, but neither would it be the best. It may be at the top end of its price bracket, but it’sin a field of one at the moment, and gives a fascina�ng glimpse of a possible future. The first vintage is 2008, 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, with 12 months in French oak. Today, the fruit for this mineral-driven expression of Sauvignon Blanc is sourcedfrom the original plan�ngs in Barbaresco and newer vineyards in Serralunga d'Alba (in the Barolo appella�on), roughly 7.5 acres in all. The name is based on two tradi�onally common elementsin the Piedmontese landscape. Alteni are the classic, short white stone walls that were once typically used to cloister the vineyards of Piedmont. Their lowcropping vines carried about 50 percent less fruit than normal, resul�ng in fruit of incredible intensity. A>er hand-sor�ng the fruit was whole-bunch pressed, fi>y percent of the blend wasfermented in tank using wild yeast and the remaining por�on was transferred to seasoned French barriques and le> to undergo fermenta�on with wild yeast. The nose is quite so> yetvery fruity. A hint of grassy greenness with a nueness, there are notes of cut herbs and apples, hints of cut hay. The palate is silken smooth in delivery. Notes of winter spice and vanilla custard,there is a nu@y oiliness which carries everything gentle. The finish is so> and slightly herbal with a peppered delivery.

£49.95A rare 10 year old from the Eastern Highland dis�llery, Teaninich. The Flora and Fauna series are becoming increasingly rare. The nose is quite fragrant with fruit and a greenness. Notes of cuthay and chamomile, hints of wood resins and potpourri with a li@le winter spice and a gentle citric acidity. The palate is of medium-body with a pleasant dryness. There are notes of barley sugarsand cereal notes. There are some oily herbal notes with more of that citric acidity developing with a hint of espresso. The finish is quite dry and of medium-length with its gentle cut grasses.
