In the competition, sheep are scored on conformation, wool quality, wool cut for type, evenness of mob, as well as management and husbandry. It was great to hear the judges’ comments, who took the time to speak with our students and share some of their knowledge. This ex- perience was particularly beneficial as it linked closely with the Dubbo National Merino Wether Challenge. We are very grateful for the oppor- tunity. On Monday 19th February, our Yr’s 9/10 elective Agriculture class attended Dubbo TAFE to participate in industry workshops in prep- aration for the Dubbo National Merino Wether Challenge which takes place in August. Upon completion of the workshops, all schools were presented with wethers, all of which have been donat- ed by Egelabra Merino Stud in Warren. DCS will be entering 2 teams in the competition. The wethers will be judged, individually and in teams of 3, on body and fleece weight, eye muscle and value over hook. The students will be grad- ed on their knowledge of the animal and their handling techniques. For the next 6 months, we will have 7 extra animals to feed in our Ag Plot. To ensure that our wethers present well, we will need to provide them with nutritious feed. With that in mind, we need your help. We are asking for donations of grain (oats/barley), lupins or hay (small bales) with which to feed our wethers. We wish to buy or borrow a small grain feeder for the duration of the competition. If you are in a position to make a contribution, please contact Ali Mayes at school.

WE CRUNCHED IT! Our school is participating in Vegetable Week and The Big Vegie Crunch on Thursday 1 March 2018 - Kinder to Year 6 at 10.00am and Year 7 to Year 12 during Roll Call.

What is The Big Vegie Crunch? Did you know that only 5.4% of Australian children eat enough vegetables? To encourage stu-dents to eat more vegetables, our school will be taking part in The Big Vegie Crunch (as part of Vegetable Week) on Thursday 1st March.

Schools across NSW will be joining together to break the record for the most students crunching vegetables simultaneously.

What can you do to help? Pack a container of vegetables (not fruit) for

your child to eat on the day. Keep serving up the vegetables at home!

Lions Youth of the Year Quest

Regional Final On Sunday 25th February 2018 the Regional Final of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest was held at Dunedoo Sports Club.

Dunedoo Central School was excellently represented by Emma Bennetts and Paige Thomson. They were joined in the Quest by four students from Muswellbrook High School. These students were: Liam Barnes, Jenna Besford, Marcus Morris and Rhylie Pereira.

Contestants were subject to a rather lengthy and detailed interview process where they were assessed on their knowledge of current affairs issues, their leadership credentials, academic achievement and sporting and cultural pursuits.

The judging panel commented on the excellent and committed way in which each contestant held themselves dur-ing this interview process.

The contestants were next required to speak in an impromptu manner for up to two minutes duration on the fol-lowing topics:

The most important lesson of my life so far is…

Which of the five senses is the most important?

All contestants spoke confidently and knowledgably on the given topics. All contestants were able to speak coherently and with some degree of structure.

Finally, each contestant was required to deliver a five minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice. Emma Bennett spoke on the death penalty and Paige Thomson spoke about the power of women and the word ‘no.’ The Muswellbrook contestants spoke on topics including Australian beef, ‘closing the gap’ on indigenous inequality, gun control in the USA and world peace.

All six contestants spoke with great confidence and expression and each had meticulously re-searched and honed their speeches to a professional standard.

The overall winner on the day was Marcus Morris. He was a highly accomplished public speaker and interview participant and he now proceeds to the District level of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest. I wish him all the best in his endeavours. Jenna Besford was the overall public speaking winner with a very impassioned speech concerning world peace.

I would also like to congratulate the outstanding effort of Emma Bennetts and Paige Thomson. Although these contestants will not proceed further, each has been an outstanding ambassador for their community, family and school.

Thank you to the judging panel comprised of Warren Bull, Monica Foran and Winsome Row-botham. Without you, the process is not possible. Thank you also to Tony Yeo and Donna Lane for your overall organisation and support. Mr Shane Hall

Welcome to Week 5 - Vegetable Week & The Big Vegie Crunch! Dunedoo Central School is taking part in this health promotion initiative, aligned with our existing Crunch & Sip. More information is available in this newsletter.

This week Year 10 students who did not attain a Band 8 in NAPLAN Reading, Writing or Numeracy in 2017 will sit the first online test to demonstrate the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy needed to receive the HSC in 2020. This is the first opportunity for students to complete these tests. They will have several opportunities over the next 3 years to demonstrate their achievement. This applies only for the current Yr 10 Students.

Following a release from the Minister for Education last week, Year 9 NAPLAN tests will no longer be utilised as an early way for students to demonstrate these minimum standards. The minimum standard is set at level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF), which requires students to have the skills to complete such tasks as:

following safety instructions in equipment manuals

Understanding a mobile phone plan

Writing a job application

Students will show they meet the HSC minimum standard by passing online tests, which will be available for them to sit when they are ready in Year 10,11 or 12 and after the HSC. This will be the case for students who are current-ly in Year 9 or lower.

This week a number of students will be representing Dunedoo Central School at the Dubbo District Twilight Swim-ming Carnival. We wish them all the best and look forward to hearing about their efforts!

This week students will continue their Agricultural program at the Junior Judging workshop in Mudgee. A huge thank you to Mick & Wendy Inder for hosting our Yr 9/10 Ag students at their farm for the Chris Naake Memorial Flock Ewe Competition. We greatly appreciate the support of students at our school and thank you to Mrs Ali Mayes for providing the students with this opportunity.

Congratulations to all students who competed in the CHS Western Region 15s Touch Football Trial last Friday. Well done to Lexi Gallagher and Tayla O’Malley who were both selected in the Team to compete at the State Carnival to be held in Mudgee on the 5/6 May. Thank you to Rachael Hogden for Coaching the team, Cathy Gallagher for as-sisting with transport and Georgie Lane for Refereeing on the day.

Thank you to Mr Adam Honeysett for organising the visit from the St George Illawarra Dragons Ambassadors last Wednesday. The presentation was called “Best You Can Be Program’. Kezie Apps, who played for the Jillaroos also attended and spoke to the students.

Congratulations to both Emma Bennetts and Paige Thomson who competed in the Regional Final of the Lions Youth of Year yesterday. Both girls were excellent and should be very proud of their efforts as we at Dunedoo Cen-tral School are. The girls spoke extremely well in both their impromptu and prepared speeches and the judges were very impressed with our students. Well done girls!

Don’t forget our first Merit Assembly next Monday. We would love to see you there & remember the Big Vegie Crunch!

Have a great week!

Binnaway Junior Judging Last Tuesday 20th February, 2 of our senior Agricultural girls competed with over 100 students at Binnaway Junior Judging. The day included workshops on agronomy and the wool industry. The students also judged pigs, chooks, sheep and cattle. Congratulations to Skye Leeson who was awarded 1st overall in her age group and to Emma Bennetts who achieved 2nd place. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and would like thank the Binnaway Show Society for hosting the event.

Its hard to be believe that we are starting Week 5 and we are just about half way through Term 1. Thank you to all the parents and carers who are picking up children from the carpark exit. Our bus routine is smooth and safe without additional movement through this area in the afternoon. All students will be bringing home a copy of their year level Maths Dictionary with their homework this week. This is to share common language that is being used for Maths lessons. This Thursday we are encouraging children to bring vegetables for “Crunch N Sip” so we can help “Healthy Kids” beat the 2017 record of students eating healthy options. Thank you for supporting us with this initiative. Have a wonderful start to March. Ms Michelle Gavin, Assistant Principal Infants

Kindergarten / Year 1: A nice wet start to the week. Our farmers will be very relieved that the

forecast finally delivered!

Homework this week will be as normal, however Year 1 have a writing task instead of the normal literacy activity. This activity is the writing competition for the Dunedoo Show. I have spoken with the children regarding this and we have brainstormed ideas in class. Any completed texts will be submitted to the Show and you should see them dis-played in the Bowman Pavilion.

Kindergarten have completed their first Jolly Phonics booklet and these were sent home today. Students learn 3 new sounds per week and their corresponding actions. Please would you practice these with your child at home as it will help reinforce each letter sound and build his/her confidence when reading and writing in class.

In Maths this week students will be working on their addition skills. A copy of each year’s Maths dictionary from your child’s textbook was also sent home today. This should help explain any concepts that your child may be con-fused with when completing maths activities.

Well done to the many students who went up on their readers last week. It is wonderful to see such progress so early on in the year. Keep up the good work!

Have a great week. Mr Ben Kline

Year 2/3: We are continuing to practice sharing information reports for News this week.

Our word work focuses on “ph” words and words that have the long “u” sound. We are discovering adjectives that help make our narrative writing interesting and enjoyable. This week Mathletics and Reading Eggs, log in details will come home with homework. It would be great for you to see the work we are exploring for these 2 programs, if you have access to the internet. We are only 3 cubes away from a class celebration for being in the right place at the right time and being on task. We are looking forward to celebrating sometime this week. Keep up the terrific home reading . Thank you to Sam and Hayley F. for helping with Readers on Wednesdays. Ms Michelle Gavin

It’s Week 5 and we have a lot of things happening at DCS! Notes about Peachey Shield/Richardson Cup will come home this week. All Primary usually attend this very worthwhile sporting event, which will take place in Dunedoo on 21st March. Friday sport this week will continue to be at the pool, however, in com-ing weeks we will focus on practising our football skills.

On Thursday this week some of our Primary/Infants students will travel over to Dubbo to compete in the Dubbo District Swimming Carnival commencing from 5pm. A big thank you to all staff, parents and volunteers who will be supporting our students in this. Best of luck everyone!

There is a growing pile of lost property at school at the moment, including tow-els that were left behind at the swimming carnival. If your child is missing an item of clothing, please call in to the school to check through our lost property. Labelled items usually find their way back to their owner, but many items are unmarked.

Our whole school Merit Assembly will be held next Monday in the school hall. If you have time, please come along and join us in celebrating the achievements of our students. Have a great week everyone!

Mrs Georgia Shephard - Assistant Principal Primary

Year 3/4: Welcome back everyone and welcome to Week 5, Term 1. Firstly, a big congratulations to

all our students who have qualified for the upcoming District Swimming Carnival in Dubbo this Thursday. Re-member to return your permission notes and to see me after the carnival for A.C.E signatures for repre-senting at this District level. Secondly, last week the Primary Excursion information notes went home to par-ents. If you would like your child to go on the Bathurst and Blue Mountains School Excursion (in October - Term 4) could you please return the permission note and the $30 deposit to secure your child’s place on the bus. Have a great week everybody. Cheers, Mr Honeysett

Year 5/6: Although it is still a work in progress, Stage 3 are beginning to recognise the power of

using positive words, and making more sensible choices on the playground. This is great to see. Last week we developed lesson ideas to teach to K-1 students, which ranged from learning to count beyond 20 to tying a shoelace. This is an activity we plan to continue, as it is so beneficial for all involved!

Good luck to our swimming competitors attending Thursday’s DDPSSA swimming carnival—I will be there to cheer you on along with our wonderful band of supporters who selflessly give their time to help show the world what DCS students can achieve. We wish you all the best.

Homework is coming home today, and due in Friday or Monday. Don’t forget homework centre operates on Wednesday afternoons to help students (and parents).

A fabulous Week 5. Mrs Georgia Shephard

Year 6 Maths: This week in Maths students will be working on Multiplication by 2-digit num-

Learning and Support This year I am working in the Secondary supporting students learning on Tuesdays and Thursdays both in and outside of the classroom. If you have any concerns about your child's learning or gen-eral wellbeing please feel free to contact me at school . Studies show that students do best when supported by a caring adult so take the time each day to discuss how your child is progressing both academically and socially at school. Perhaps the following suggestions will give you a new way to start the conversation. To ASK your Child So How Was School Today? (without asking "so how was school today?)

What was the best thing that happened at school today? Tell me something that made you laugh today. What do you do at recess? How did you help somebody today. Tell me one thing you learned today. When were you happiest today ?

Reminder that homework study is available Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and this is a great opportunity to get some extra help completing homework or work on upcoming assignments. Mrs. Carolyn Sullivan, Secondary Learning and Support Teacher

Afternoon Study

Afternoon study will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the rest of this term in Room 10. This week

Mrs Fergusson will be supervising on Monday, Mrs Stoddart on Wednesday and Mrs Gallagher on Thursday. After-

noon study runs from 3:10pm until approximately 4:30pm. If you are leaving school and then coming back to

afternoon study please let the supervising teacher know before you leave.

Last week the St George Illawarra Dragons visited

DCS in the lead up to the 2018 Charity Shield match

against the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The Dragons

visit focused on promoting Rugby League, living a

healthy lifestyle and wellbeing. Our students were

lucky enough to meet and talk to Kezie Apps, a fe-

male rugby league player who plays for the Dragons

in the NRL Women’s Competition. Kezie is a tremen-

dously tough rugby league player, who won the fe-

male version of the Dally M Award in 2016. Kezie is

also a current Australian Jillaroo representative 2nd

Row Forward who played in last year’s successful

World Cup winning team. This visit is just the begin-

ning of our school’s relationship with the Dragons as

some of the players in the NRL squad will be visiting

DCS again in May to run the Dragons Blitz skills

based program which will be run in the lead up to

the Round 11 Dragons v Canberra Raiders NRL

match in Mudgee.

On Friday 23rd February, seven students at-

tended the Western Region Touch Trials in Or-

ange. Seven teams in both the boys and the

girls divisions played a round robin competition,

enabling selectors more opportunity to see all

players. Annie Christensen, Tayla O’Malley,

Lexi Gallagher, Ally Stoddart, Meg Christensen

and Hallie Hogden joined five other girls from

Boorowa, Kandos and Parkes in a Girls trial team, while Ben Gallagher joined a boys trial team.

Both sides played extremely well, with their only defeats of the day being at the hands of the Or-

ange High School sides.

A very special congratulations must go out to Tayla O’Malley and Lexi Gallagher for making the

Western Region Girls 15’s side that will compete in a State Competition early next term. ‘

Many thanks to Georgia Lane for capably refereeing throughout the tournament.
