It is our great pleasure to share with you the 2015 series. This year the seminar series has been aligned with the Scosh Medical Educaon Research Consortium (SMERC) research networks (building a resilient workforce, curriculum innovaon and integraon, the culture of learning together in the workplace, bridging the gap between assessment and feedback, and valuing the role of educators). SMERC is a collaboration between NES and the five Scottish medical schools, which aims to conduct high quality and impacul healthcare educaon research in Scotland and beyond [ www.SMERC.org.uk]. The seminars are presented by local, national and international speakers, and include a series of qualitave and quantave methodological workshops relevant to healthcare educaon research. This seminar and workshop programme aims to build capacity for healthcare educaon research across the School and give colleagues the opportunity to meet fellow educaon researchers within Dundee and beyond. In parcular, regular aenders to the educaon research seminars include colleagues from the School of Educaon, Social Work and Connuing Educaon (SESWCE) at the University of Dundee, and from NHS Educaon for Scotland (NES). We are now into our sixth year of this seminar and workshop programme and would like to thank all of the people who have aended our seminars and workshops over the last few years and in parcular those regular aenders who have made the series such a great success. We would also like to thank both the Medical Educaon Instute and ACT for their generous financial support of the programme. Without this funding these seminars and workshops would not be possible. We welcome all healthcare educators (University and NHS-based), colleagues from SESWCE, SMERC and NES. Please do get these dates in your diary and join us. DUNDEE HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION RESEARCH SEMINARS

welcome Welcome to the Dundee Health Professions Education Research Seminar Series for 2015. It is our great pleasure to share with you the 2015 series. This year the seminar series has been aligned with the Scottish Medical Education Research Consortium (SMERC) research networks (building a resilient workforce, curriculum innovation and integration, the culture of learning together in the workplace, bridging the gap between assessment and feedback, and valuing the role of educators). SMERC is a collaboration between NES and the five Scottish medical schools, which aims to conduct high quality and impactful healthcare education research in Scotland and beyond [www.SMERC.org.uk]. The seminars are presented by local, national and international speakers, and include a series of qualitative and quantitative methodological workshops relevant to healthcare education research.

This seminar and workshop programme aims to build capacity for healthcare education research across the School and give colleagues the opportunity to meet fellow education researchers within Dundee and beyond. In particular, regular attenders to the education research seminars include colleagues from the School of Education, Social Work and Continuing Education (SESWCE) at the University of Dundee, and from NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

We are now into our sixth year of this seminar and workshop programme and would like to thank all of the people who have attended our seminars and workshops over the last few years and in particular those regular attenders who have made the series such a great success. We would also like to thank both the Medical Education Institute and ACT for their generous financial support of the programme. Without this funding these seminars and workshops would not be possible.

We welcome all healthcare educators (University and NHS-based), colleagues from SESWCE, SMERC and NES. Please do get these dates in your diary and join us. If you have any questions about the programme or suggestions for future seminars, please email Dr Ashley Dennis ([email protected]) or Dr Stella Howden ([email protected]).

series aimsIn order to build research capacity and capability, we are running a series of seminars and workshops annually. We have tried to streamline the series to one event a month, which incorporates a seminar and a quarterly methodological workshop. These seminars and workshops are open to all, although preference will be given to Dundee staff (and students) in the event that a maximum number is stipulated (e.g. for workshops).

smerc (www.smerc.org.uk)The Scottish Medical Education Research Consortium (SMERC) is a collaboration between NES (NHS Education for Scotland) and all five Universities in Scotland with medical schools (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St Andrews).

themetic networks• Culture of learning together in the workplace:

aims to bring together researchers interested in effective workplace learning cultures including priority topics such as teamwork, professionalism, interprofessionalism, leadership, and communication.

• Enhancing and valuing the role of educators: aims to bring together researchers interested in effective workplace teaching, the selection and approval of educators, supporting and valuing the role of educators, faculty development such as providing useful feedback, and how to balance conflicts between patient care with student learning.

• Curriculum integration and innovation: aims to bring together researchers interested in curriculum integration (e.g. integration between formal, informal, and hidden curriculum, vertical integration between undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum, curriculum preparing for practice), and curriculum innovations (e.g. impact of technology, simulation etc.).

• Bridging the gap between assessment and feedback: aims to bring together researchers interested in the role of assessments in medical education, providing useful feedback to students and trainees, and exploring fitness for practice.

• Building a resilient workforce: aims to bring together researchers interested in studying the resilience and well-being of students and trainees, the selection and recruitment of doctors, and career choices for students and trainees.

seminarsThe Dundee Health Professions Education Research seminar series aims to present high-quality educational research to an often mixed audience comprised of users of educational research (e.g. health professional educators, healthcare students etc.) and other producers of educational research (e.g. educational and social sciences researchers). Through these monthly seminars, we expect the audience to develop their knowledge of various educational topics commensurate with key research themes identified as important for Scotland (building a resilient workforce, curriculum innovation and integration, the culture of learning together in the workplace, bridging the gap between assessment and feedback, and valuing the role of educators). We also expect the audience to learn more about educational and social sciences theories underpinning educational research and methodologies relevant to educational research. Finally, we aim for the research seminars to provide like-minded researchers across the University and beyond with a forum to network with colleagues.

workshopsThe Dundee Health Professions Education Research workshop series comprises four methodological workshops per year linked to four of the monthly seminars. Through these quarterly workshops, we expect participants to develop their understanding of important and innovative methods in healthcare education research and how they might apply these methods to their own research contexts.
