WELCOME TO ORIEL PARK:THE HOME OF FOOTBALL04

Page 5: Dundalk v Galway United (Friday 11 March 2011)

Thank you for supporting the DundalkFCMagazine. Please note that allcontent tonight was supplied before theGlentoran match. While it is great tofinally compete in the Setanta Cup theMonday night games make programmeproduction awkward!

It’s our first home league game of the seasonand I’m sure we all have high ambitionsfor the season ahead. The squad that theclub have put together this season is veryexciting and I expect Oriel Park to be anexciting venue this season. It’s not just onthe pitch that we can be excited about thefuture.

If anybody has not yet been across at theYouth Development Centre here at OrielPark I would encourage you to do so. In fact,pre-match before the Glentoran match maybe a good time as you can also enjoy thepre-match Legends Q&A session that ColmCrosson writes about in this issue. Just lastweek approximately 1100 people attendeda white collar boxing event – and the centrewas not even half full. There is no otherfacility in the country like it at the disposalof a League of Ireland club. You will also

see a Snooker Legends tournament advertised (to the left!) in the programmetonight which is just one of the many eventsplanned for it. Obviously, as Gerry Matthewshas stated publically, the centre will taketime to realise its full potential. I’m sure allDundalk fans would wish Gerry and histeam all the best with the venture and thatwe wish it all the success it deserves.

In the centre-pages tonight we have a pull-out poster of Simon Madden at thelaunch of the Airtricity league campaign at the Aviva stadium. Simon has been veryimpressive since his arrival last year and hisperformance in Tallaght last Friday showedthat he is a great choice of captain. Goodluck to Simon in his new role in the team.

We hope you enjoy tonight’s Dundalk FCMagazine. We also hope you enjoy the newdundalkfc.com that went online two weeksago. Hopefully by now all the problems havebeen ironed out and when you log in tonightand tomorrow you will be able to read abouta good win for Dundalk!

KICK-OFFDUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

HELLO and welcome to Oriel Park fortonight's Airtricity League Premier Divisiongame versus Galway United. I would like toextend a warm welcome to Seán Connor, hisstaff, the directors, players and supporters ofGalway United here this evening.

It has been five months to the day since our lasthome fixture in the league. When I look at it likethat it is hard to believe why we try to cram in asmany fixtures as we do in the football calendar.Surely it would make sense to extend the leagueseason by at least four weeks. I believe the qualityof football would improve dramatically if theplayers were given more suitable rest timebetween games. In the four weeks between ourfirst round second leg Setanta Sports Cup gameon 28 February and up to the league match against

‘‘ My players took the game toRovers...and we dominated

On Friday night we lost our opening league gameof the season away at Champions ShamrockRovers. The toughest place to kick-off the seasonwas in Tallaght, however, my players took thegame to Rovers and for the opening 45 minuteswe dominated the game. We pressed them all overthe pitch and dominated possession, dominatedplay territorially and dominated chance wise.

The sending off of Peter Cherrie obviously hada huge bearing on the game. To lose him, such apivotal member of the team, on 23 minutes, putus on the back foot.

The players continued to play in the manner inwhich they started the game and to their creditwe took the lead on the stroke of half-time.Unfortunately we couldn't see it through to

the break and the equaliser was a huge blowpsychologically to the players. The second halfwas tough on the lads, Rovers deservedly wonthe game but the players continued to applythemselves properly until the final whistle.

Tonight, like every other fixture thisseason, will be a tough game. Hope-fully we can get our first points oftheseason and set the ball rolling.

Enjoy the game!

Ian FosterDundalk FC manager

Saint Patrick’s Athletic on Friday 25 March inInchicore, we will play seven games, too many forme at this early stage of proceedings.

Last week we progressed into the quarter-finals ofthe Setanta Sports Cup with a 6-4 aggregate winover Linfield. This competition is a very importantone to me and my players and hopefully we will beable to progress to the latter stages. It won't beeasy, as we now face Glentoran over two legs. I amwriting these notes before the trip to The Oval onMonday so I am unable to comment on the game. The win over Linfield was a great one for thesupporters; it was probably the best atmospherethat I have sampled here at Oriel and hopefullythere will be plenty more nights like that to come.

Once you go down toten, the game obviouslychanges. But we have tomove on from that nowand put it behind us.

Galway will provideanother difficultchallenge for us tonight. While they have lostsome good players overthe winter, they have alsoadded some good players, including Shaun Kelly whowas one of our better performers last season. Galwaygave us four tough games last season. This is our firsthome league game and we have to be positive. It isimportant to get a win early on in the season. We hadsome very good results at Oriel Park last year andhopefully we can find consistency this season. I thinkthat is key. We have to start brightly and get points onthe board. At the same time it is not really about howyou start, it’s about how you finish. We learned that lastseason when we got off to a flying start but then hit abad patch in the middle of the season. If we can get

WE ARE obviously coming into this matchlooking to bounce back from last week’s opening-night defeat by Shamrock Rovers at TallaghtStadium, and to get our first points on the board.I think we should only be taking positives out oflast week’s game. I wouldn’t really read too muchinto it because the sending off changed the game, but we started brilliantly and for the first half-hourplayed some really good football. There was onlyone team in it.

Unfortunately, Simon and Mark didn’t put away theirchances and then Pete got sent off and that was a bigfactor in the game. But we stuck at it and to go 1-0 upwas a big boost, but then to concede almost straightaway and just before the break was a killer blow. Thenafter the break, we conceded two goals very quick – ifyou give Gary Twigg two chances like that he is goingto score. The red card was really the turning point inthe game. If we had kept 11 men on the pitch I thinkwe would have continued to play how we had in theopening 30 minutes. When we went down to ten men,Rovers grew in confidence and the goal just beforehalf-time gave them momentum going into the break.

momentum early in the campaign it will give us aplatform and then it’s a case of staying consistent, getting to July or August, assess where we are andthen take it from there and really go for it and try tochallenge.

On my own recovery, following osteitis pubis, thingsare going really well and I have been training more orless as normal over the last two weeks. It’s about gettingminutes on the pitch. Once I get 90 minutes under mybelt I will see how my body feels. I will continually getfitter and fitter; it will probably take another couple ofweeks to get back to where I was. The good thingabout this year is that there is a lot of competition forplaces, so you know if you’re not performing well thatthere is someone else there ready to step in, and thatcan only be a good thing. On expectations for theyear, looking at the squad, we have added some greatexperience in the shape of Jason Byrne and ColinHawkins and that only bodes well for trying to get backinto the European shake-up. Enjoy the match!

KICK-OFFDUNDALK v GALWAY UNITED

GOOD EVENING everyone and welcome to OrielPark for our first home game of the 2011 AirtricityPremier League season against Galway United. We would like to extend a warm welcome to theGalway United manager, Sean Connor, his playersand staff, as well as the officials and supporters ofthe Club. While we welcome our ex-manager backto Oriel Park for tonight’s game we also welcomeback our ex-player Shaun Kelly. Shaun, who signedwith Galway during the close season was a firmfavourite with all Dundalk fans for the two seasonswhich he spent with us.

Galway United had a fairly turbulent off season, interms of losing a number of their more influential

against Linfield with a professional one all draw. Thefirst goal in that game was always going to be crucialand thankfully we got it through an excellent RossGaynor strike. Going in to the Linfield games we reallywere the underdogs, but thanks to a fantastic away winat Windsor Park we have now qualified for the lasteight. I am writing this piece before last Monday night’strip to the Oval to play Glentoran, so hopefully as youread this we have secured a positive result in that game, and have given ourselves an opportunity to progress tothe next round when we play the return leg here onMonday 21 March. Our experience in competing inthis competition has certainly been a positive one so farand Ian, Darius and the players and staff can certainlytake a lot of credit from the team’s performances.

Setanta success:Ross Gaynor (top) on target against Linfield; Ciaran Bond (right) on board

‘‘The performances of our team...augurs well for the season ahead’’players from last season and initially only being awarded

an ‘A League’ licence. However despite these difficultiesthey have taken their rightful place in the top flight andwe wish them well for the season ahead. Like ourselvesGalway suffered defeat in their opening league gameand I’m sure that they are anxious to get off the markwith a result here tonight.

Well it certainly has been a hectic start to the 2011season for ourselves with our Setanta Sports Cupgames against Linfield and our league opener lastFriday night against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght.Firstly, we finished off the task here last Monday week

Back to the Airtricity League, and despite our 3-1 defeatat the hands of Rovers, I felt that we played very wellin that game. Prior to Peter’s sending off we werecertainly on top and should probably have been at leastone goal to the good. However with only 10 men forthree quarters of the game against a team of the calibreof Rovers there could really only be one outcome.Consequently after that defeat it is imperative that weget a good result against Galway United this evening.

The performances of our team so far augurs very wellfor the season ahead. Ian has signed some very skilfuland exciting players for our club, and it should be an

Tony Cavanagh rememberedWhen a then 23 year-old TonyCavanagh joined Dundalk fromGlentoran in August 1972, hav-ing already won the Irish Leaguechampionship with the Glens, few would have realised the im-pact that his maverick and uniquewing play would have for theLilywhites over the following fiveyears. The Jim McLaughlin erawas about to be born and themercurial Cavanagh was an

inspiration with his mesmericdribbling from the left wing asDundalk gained the first of manytrophies in clinching the 1975/76league title. Cavanagh won thefootballer of the year accolade in1974, played briefly in the USAfor the Philidelphia Atoms, be-fore gracing the Showgroundsin the colours of Sligo Roversfor another three seasons. Replacing Barry Ryan will not bean easy task, but Sean Connorwill be hoping that Fleming canbe as big a success at TerrylandPark this season. Galway announced the signing of the Edinburgh native on the eve of their opening fixture with St Patrick’s. He began his careerat Livingston before moving toGretna for successful spell. Such was Fleming’s impact hereceived a call-up to the ScottishU21 team and was their firstchoice keeper for much of theirseason in the SPL. FollowingGretna’s financial problems,Fleming departed for Oldhamwhere he played 18 times beforebeing released in January 2011.

A local Galwegian who hasemerged through the ranks atGalway United following spellsin Junior football with MervueUnited and Renmore. Sinnott iscomfortable at either right-backor centre-back. Sean Connor obviously thinks very highly of him as he has named himGalway’s club captain for the2011 Airtricity League season.

An interview in the Galway Independent revealed that hisleast favourite sport is cricketand that he is also a keen Connacht Rugby fan.

It’s a big welcome back to a fans favourite from the last twoseasons at Oriel. Shaun Kelly departed last October at the endof the season and has now rejoined his ex-Dundalk bossSean Connor. Indeed, Connorsnapped up Kelly for Dundalkfrom Hearts in January 2009 andKelly would go on to own theright-back slot until the arrivalof Simon Madden last July whenhe was asked to fill in at left-back during an injury crisis. Bestremembered for one of the goalsof the season in October 2009when he struck a volley homefrom 30 yards at Turner’s Cross.Even he couldn’t believe it whenit dropped under the crossbar!

Walsh is another Galway localwho broke into the first team in the latter half of the 2010 season. A centre-half, he is a hot prospect who played forlocal side Galway Hibs beforesigning for United – and played15 times last year scoring twogoals. So impressive was Walshthat he picked up the GalwayUnited Young Player of the Yearaward.

Avid MNS watchers may remember Walsh from a matchtowards the end of the seasonagainst Sporting Fingal when hescored a spectacular long rangeeffort from 25 yards.

A skilful player who is equallycomfortable in midfield or central defence. Sligo-bornFeeney first joined his local club,Sligo Rovers, in 1999. He played a big part in Sean Connor’s exciting Sligo side that earnedpromotion to the top flight in2005. However, he eventuallyjoined Monaghan United at thestart of the 2007 season and hisexperience was an invaluableasset. Returned to Sligo in 2008and remained with Rovers untilthe end of the 2010 season, buthis second stint was marred byinjury. In February 2011, he returned to the league by joiningGalway from Sligo Junior sideQuayside Rovers.

Born in Limerick in 1979, Ryanstarted out with his home townclub before making his name atGalway in the 2001/02 season. This earned him a move to Bohemians in January 2002 andhe enjoyed a tremendous2002/03 campaign and scoredthe only goal of the gameagainst Shelbourne that sealedthe league title. In 2004 hemoved to Shelbourne where hewas to win another league titlein 2006. Things didn’t work outat Dunfermline, so Ryan joinedSt Patrick’s Athletic in 2008. Returned to Galway in 2010, before being loaned to Limerickto ease financial problems, butnow back for the 2011 campaign.

Sean Connor

Sean Connor’s career took in Distillery, Port Vale, Macclesfield, Ardsand Cliftonville before injury ended his playing days. He then beganan unconventional career path towards management. He spentsome time as Birmingham City press officer before coaching in theUS and in English non-league circles. He spent some time scoutingfor Stoke and Lincoln before returning to Ireland as manager at FirstDivision Sligo Rovers in 2004. Within 15 months he had led Sligo topromotion and in their first season back in the top flight Rovers finished an impressive fifth. He moved to Bohemians and thoughhe led then to third place in the League, the FAI Cup semis and theLeague Cup final the club terminated his contract at the end of the 2007 season amid rumours of off-field improprieties. Bohs wereeventually forced to settle a court case for wrongful dismissal. Connor then replaced John Gill at newly-promoted Dundalk for the2009 campaign, where 23 red cards blighted a fifth-placed finish.Club and manager went their separate ways for 2010, with Connorending up at Galway, and maintaining the club’s top flight status onthe pitch thanks to a play-off defeat of Bray. But licensing issueshave left him short on time to field a team for the 2011 season.

CCLLUUBB SSTTAATTIISSTTIICCSSGalway United were initially founded as Galway Rovers inthe Claddagh district of the city in 1937. The club operatedat junior level with great success before taking their firststeps into the senior game by competing in the 1976/77League Cup. By the next season, Rovers were in the Leagueof Ireland, making their debut on 28 August 1977 againstSaint Patrick’s Athletic at Terryland Park. The club graduallymade an impression, losing the 1980/81 League Cup final on penalties to Dundalk at Oriel Park after both legs of thefinal ended goalless. The club then changed their name toGalway United and the mid-1980s provided their best run ofsuccess to date - 1984/85 provided their first FAI Cup final(and a 1-0 loss to Shamrock Rovers), and then 1985/86 gave a second-placed finish in the league and a League Cup win(a 2-0 defeat of Dundalk). The club exacted revenge againstthe Hoops by beating them 1-0 in the 1990/91 FAI Cup finaland they defeated Cork City in the 1996/97 League Cup finalover two legs. This is their 25th season in the top flight.

Dave Connell

CAPTAIN of the Irish Schoolboys’under-15s team when playingat centre-half, classy DaveO’Connell had a well-earnedreputation as one of the best attacking full-backs in theLeague of Ireland during his six-season spell with Bohemians.Debuting at Dalymount in the1979/80 season under BillyYoung, he also earned League of Ireland Inter-league caps, butthe major trophies eluded himduring this period.

For four consecutive years,Dave collected runner up mementos—for the FAI Cup in1982 when losing to Limerickand the following year to Sligofollowed by two League secondspots, in 1983/84 and 1984/85,when Jim McLaughlin’s Shamrock Rovers were lordingit over everybody. The 1981/82Cup loss followed a magnificentsemi-final win over Dundalkafter a four-game marathon. Dave was one of the first signings made by TurloughO’Connor when he was

appointed Dundalk manager inthe summer of 1985, and by thefollowing January Dave hadadded another silver medal tohis collection, this time in theLeague Cup after losing in thefinal to Galway United. An early season mystery injury inthe following season—later diagnosed as caused by a pieceof bone lodged in the muscle ofhis upper leg—severely limitinghis appearances, meant missingtwo more runner up spots inLeague and FAI Cup when Dundalk failed to get the betterof Shamrock Rovers.

He was unable to dislodge JoeyMalone from his full-back slotin the 1987/88 double-winningseason, and after being maderedundant (he was a bricklayerwith CIE), he decided to emigrate to America in January1988 and he spent 18 months in San Francisco. On his returnto Ireland, he was snapped upby Noel King, Shamrock Roversmanager. King converted Connell to a midfielder andover a three-season spell he became one of the leading midfielders in the league. InJanuary 1991 he won his firstSoccer Writers Player of theMonth Award, 12 seasons aftermaking his debut. He was alsovoted Rovers Player of the Year

for the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons. In 1991, he collectedhis third FAI Cup runner upmedal when Galway United gotthe better of Rovers in the final.

Leaving Rovers after the 1991/92year, he spent a season in theIrish League with Ards wherehis midfield leadership spurredthe team to a mid-season club-record 14 matches unbeaten record and to semi-final appearances in the Budweiser Floodlit Cup and theWilkinson League Cup. In thesecond half of the year theybattled through to an Irish Cupfinal appearance but in a three-match marathon, local rivals Bangor won the secondreplay with a goal in the lastminute and Dave added an IrishCup runner up medal to histhree FAI runner up mementos.

For a fee of £2,500 he movedsouth, this time to Droghedabut even the arrival of JimMcLaughlin as managercouldn’t save the Boynesidersfrom relegation. His last playingstint was with Limerick, wherehe spent five seasons, finishingup as playing-manager until hewas sacked in February 1999.His last league involvement wasduring 2000/01 as manager ofGalway United.

In came Alan O’Neill, Joey Malone, Mick Shelley, RoddyCollins and Harry McCueamong others. It was an encouraging first season forTurly, with Dundalk pushingShamrock Rovers and Galwayall the way in the league.

Dundalk only conceded European qualification to Galway on the last day of theseason. Dundalk also made the League Cup final as O’Connor stamped his mark on his new club.

1985/86 also marked TommyMcConville’s last season atDundalk, after 20 years and 700games.

Galway were emerging as genuine title contenders underthe management of Tony Mannion.

After enjoying their first European tie, against Danishside Lyngby, Galway started the 22-match league seasonwith an impressive 16-matchunbeaten run up to March.

On 2 March they hosted champions and title rivalsShamrock Rovers at TerrylandPark, but Jim McLaughlin’sHoops proved their class with a3-1 win.

United also lost their next two game to Bohs and Dundalkbut steadied themselves to ease Dundalk out in the racefor Europe, sealing second spot, their highest-ever finish, and a UEFA Cup spot. TheTribesmen also won the League Cup, beating Dundalk 2-0 in the Tolka Park final.

Jim McLaughlin’s ShamrockRovers completed a hat-trick ofleague titles, pipping Galwayand Dundalk to the title. TheHoops completed the double, beating Waterford 2-0 in the FAICup final.

The first season of the First Division saw new boys BrayWanderers top the table. Despite the hype and fanaticalsupport, Derry City finishedmid-table - but then moved toappoint Jim McLaughlin asmanager.

Rovers were well beaten byHungarian side Honved in theEuropean Cup, Galway heldDanish cup winners Lyngby to a 4-2 aggregate win on their European debut while Bohemians lost 5-2 at home to a very strong Dundee United, but held the Scots to a 2-2 at Tannadice.

With previously dominant English clubs banned from European football after theHeysel tragedy, European competitions had a novel look to them.

Steaua Bucharest became thefirst club to take the EuropeanCup to the east, beating TerryVenables’ Barcelona 2-0 in astunningly inept penaltyshootout after a drab scorelessdraw.

Valery Lobanovski’s disciplined, tactical Dynamo Kiev won theCup Winners’ Cup, beatingAtlético Madrid 3-0 in the final.

Real Madrid won the UEFA Cup, thrashing Cologne 5-1 in the first leg of the final andrunning out 5-3 winners on aggregate.

Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for the 1986 FIFA World Cupwere effectively over before thestart of the season. Drawn in agroup with Russia, Denmark,Switzerland and Norway EoinHand’s side struggled.

Defeats in Moscow and athome to an emerging Denmark, featuring Preben Elkjaer, JanMolby and Michael Laudrup, left Ireland fourth in a fiveteam group.

Shamrock Rovers’ Pat Byrneplayed against Denmark in November, and was the lastLeague of Ireland player to playfor Ireland for over 20 years.

Jack Charlton replaced EoinHand in the spring, leading Ireland to a surprise win in a mini-tournament in Iceland, beating the hosts and Czechoslovakia.

With English clubs bannedfrom European competitionafter the Heysel disaster English football concentratedon domestic matters.

New Liverpool player-managerKenny Dalglish led his side totheir first League-FA Cup double.

In Scotland Hearts contrived to lose at Dundee on the finalday to hand the league title toCeltic. It was the first leaguetitle for the Old Firm in fourseason - they have won everytitle since.

Roy Coyle’s Linfield strolled to the fifth of six successiveIrish League titles. The Blueshad eight points to spare over runners-up Coleraine. Coleraine also made the IrishCup final, but were beaten 2-1 by a Glentoran side whowon the second of four successive Irish Cup titles.

Dundalk qualified for the FreeState Cup Final by beatingDolphin 3-1 at DalymountPark in this semi-final replay. The result flattered Dundalk, but Dolphin (from Dolphin’sBarn in Dublin), paid thepenalty for missing many opportunities and for poorgoalkeeping. All three Dundalk goals should havebeen prevented by Kelly in the Dolphin goal. Conversely,Dundalk’s keeper McMullenproduced a string of sensational saves.

Dundalk had the better of theearly play. Berry had a goodshot saved by Kelly and soonafter he tipped over an effortby Henry Hirst. Then, after a corner had been cleared,Slowey crossed for Joey Donnelly (right) to head pastKelly at his near post to makeit 1-0. Just before half-timeDundalk broke quickly fromdefence and McCourt headedpast Kelly to make it 2-0. Thistime the keeper appeared tolose sight of the ball in thesun. Dolphin fought backstrongly in the second halfand pulled a goal back whenSomers netted with a greatleft foot shot. McMullan andhis defenders stayed strong.Dundalk remained dangerouson the break and Kelly spilleda Donnelly shot into the pathof Hirst who completed thescoring.

Both sides struggled with the blustery wind and, as aconsequence, the large crowdwitnessed a scrappy game. However, with the wind at their backs, Dundalk gradually took command ofthe game. Dundalk took the lead after the first real incident of the game. Flanagan got clear on theright wing and sent over ateasing ball into the penaltyarea which Tony O’Dohertyhandled when trying to bring it under control. GALWAY UNITED &NICK LEESON… who’d havepredicted that marriage endingin tears, eh? Leeson is renownedfor shamelessly lying andcheating about finances, deliberately misleading theauthorities and running avenerable institution into theground, while Galway Unitedon the other hand... well it’d bechurlish to mention the IAGprocess again wouldn’t it, sowe won’t. Never, ever again.

So, moving swiftly on, Galway jointhe esteemed list of Bohs, Fingal,Cork, Drogheda and everyone elsein crashing into the financial abyss. While the temporary denial ofGalway’s Premier Licence waspainted as a technicality it seemsthat United’s woes are genuine.Galway face the classic League ofIreland problem of reconcilingincome and expenditure whilepeddling a product that not manypeople are interested in. Thefundamental problem for GalwayUnited, sadly, is that Galway peoplearen’t really that interested infootball. Of course you could saythat about all League of Irelandclubs, but for whatever reasonGalway United lack the identityand the affection that is morevisible for football clubs in Sligo,Dundalk, Derry, Tallaght and Cork.

Galway is the quintessential Irishcity, only it is somehow more Irishthan the rest of the country. WhatIreland does, Galway does to ahigher factor- the arts, crapweather, the craic, destructiverelationship with alcohol, festivals, the enforced preservation of adying language, great pubs,half-hearted League of Ireland

support, bandwagon hopping forGAA, rugby, or whatever else is theflavour of the month. If you likeIreland you’ll love Galway… orpossibly drown in a cloying sea ofüber-Irishness.

Of course Galway is not anentirely sports-phobic society.Liverpool and Celtic andManchester United are held inenough esteem to be referred toas “we”. Lots and lots and lots ofpeople will go to the GalwayRaces. Galway hurling and footballwill attract formidable crowds toSalthill- when things are goingvery, very well. Connacht rugby, theArts Festival, air shows and yachtracing will also attract multitudeswhen things are going well or whenit’s an “event”. But it has to be anattractive “event” and not a run-of-the-mill, week-in week-outleague type thing requiring acommitment of time and interest.

On the interweb a couple of yearsback (there really is no limit to theresearch The Spectator puts intoan article) a Galway United fanbemoaned the fact that Galwaywere at home the same week theVolvo Ocean Race was in town.

Bear in mind that the VORbrought several hundred thousandvisitors to the city. Where else inthe world would the fact that acity’s population had temporarilyquadrupled be considered a badthing for a local business involvedin the entertainment industry?Only in Ireland- and especially inGalway. This is a city where thefootball club has such a lowprofile that a taxi driver broughtThe Spectator and friends toTerryland Shopping Centre whenwe requested Terryland Park acouple of seasons ago. Uponbeing forcibly told that we werelooking for the football ground hebrought us to the only city centresoccer pitch he was aware of - theAstroturf pitches at UCG.

The reinstatement of GalwayUnited’s Premier Division licencehas saved them the humiliation ofrelegation to the A Championshipand relegation to the status of thecity’s third biggest club. However, for the foreseeable future it seemslikely that Galway United willremain the second biggest clubin Connacht. Sligo may have afraction of the population but ithas a multiple of the passion.
