  • 2 Duncanville Marching Invitational • November 3, 2007

Ranking SystemIN 1994, the Duncanville Marching Invitational introduced the concept of “captioned ranking” to Texas marching competition. Utilizing a team of fi ve adjudicators, DMI allows each judge to score either Marching or Music and then RANK each band according to that caption. All fi ve caption rankings are then added to comprise the total ranking. Th e LOWEST total ranking is First Place. SHOULD ANY BAND RECEIVE AT LEAST TWO FIRST PLACE RANKINGS IN MUSIC AND AT LEAST ONE FIRST PLACE RANKING IN MARCHING, THEY WILL BE DECLARED THE FIRST PLACE REGARDLESS OF ANY OTHER JUDGE’S RANKING. Th e top 10 ranking bands from Preliminaries, regardless of classifi cation, will compete in the Finals. (Should any Class Champion not advance to Finals, they will have the opportunity to present an exhibition performance prior to Finals.) Th e Texas State Marching Contest adopted a modifi ed form of the DMI system in 1998, and this year the DMI will use the UIL State system in its modifi ed form. In addition, the DMI will continue to award sub-caption awards for Preliminary Competition and Outstanding Musical Performance and Outstanding Visual Performance for the Finals. Th e Preliminary Sub-caption Awards are described below. Th e Finals Music and Visual awards are given according to the lowest total ranking of the two panels of judges.

Ties for the Outstanding Musical Performance Award will be broken by judges’ preferences. Ties for the Outstanding Visual Performance Award will be broken using the average raw scores.

Should bands be tied after application of the raw scores, duplicate awards will be given.

MUSICTHREE music judges will score the bands under sub-captions:

    Brass Performance ..................................................................... 0-200Woodwind Performance ......................................................... 0-200Percussion Performance ........................................................... 0-200Ensemble Performance ............................................................. 0-200Musicianship .............................................................................. 0-200Total ........................................................................................... 0-1000

Th e COMBINATION of the three judges’ brass and woodwind scores will determine OUTSTANDING WINDS for the Preliminary Competition.Th e COMBINATION of the three judges’ percussion scores will determine OUTSTANDING PERCUSSION for the Preliminary Competition.

MARCHINGTWO marching judges will score the bands under sub-captions:

    Individual Marching ................................................................. 0-400Ensemble Marching .................................................................. 0-400Drill ...............................................................................................0-100Integration ...................................................................................0-100Total ........................................................................................... 0-1000

Th e AVERAGE of the two judges’ individual and ensemble marching scores will determine OUTSTANDING MARCHING for the Preliminary Competition.

Th e AVERAGE of the two judges’ drill and integration scores AND the three music judges’ ensemble and musicianship scores will determine OUTSTANDING GENERAL EFFECT for the Preliminary Competition

COLOR GUARDA sixth judge will score the Guard performance independently and award

OUTSTANDING GUARD based on the Preliminary performance.

The Duncanville Independent School District is proud to off er one of the most progressive band programs in the United States. Th e Duncanville High School Marching Band was awarded the “Sudler Shield of Honor” in 1997 as one of the outstanding marching bands in the U.S. Th e program has also been honored by the “John Philip Sousa Foundation” with the coveted “Sudler Flag of Honor” recognizing Duncanville as a Nationally Exemplary Band Program. Duncanville is one of only a handful of programs worldwide to hold both Sudler Awards for high school band programs.

Th e Duncanville High School Wind Ensemble has been the Featured Performing Group at the Music Educators National Conference, the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Association in Chicago, and the All-Japan Band Directors Conference in Nemu-no-Sato in 1998. Th e Wind Ensemble has never earned less than a “Superior” rating in either UIL or invitational concert competition.

Th e Wind Ensemble has been the Region XX “Honor Band” every year since 1980 and has placed in the State Finals of Honor Band competition seven times culminating in their selection as the 1998 AND 2004 TMEA AAAAA Honor Band. Reed and Byrd MSs have placed in the State Finals of Honor Band Competitions a total of 13 times. Reed MS was the 2002 CCC TMEA Honor Band and Byrd was the 1982 CCC Honor Band AND 2004 CCC Honor Band. Duncanville is one of a very few school districts in Texas of any size in which all competing organizations have been selected as Honor Band.

Th e Duncanville High School Bands paced the state in gold medals at the Interscholastic League State Competition for 18 years earning the coveted UIL State Sweepstakes Award for Class 5A. Th e award was discontinued in 1999. Duncanville High School is Texas’ only Class 5A Band to earn all three State Championships.

Th e Duncanville High School Marching Band has been the UIL State Champion in 1986, 1990, and 2002 and is the only 5A band in Texas to advance to the State Finals every year since 1988.
