Assessment and Skills Profile At the end of this project you will complete a unit test and will update your D.E.T. skills Profile. To help you prepare for this you should keep a log of how well you think you have completed each stage of your project. At the back of this book (page 16) there is a log page. As you complete each stage of the project you will see the following symbol: When you see this symbol you should record a log to assess how well you feel you have completed the task. You must assess your work using the assessment instructions below and against the success criteria for that stage. Please be honest when doing this as it is not about saying your bad at something, but real-ising that you may need a bit more time to work at things and improve as you work through S1, S2 and S3.

Introduction: Project brief Over the next 9 weeks you will be designing a clock for a client. You will be paired with some-one in your class who will be your client and you will be their designer. WHY DO THIS? In design designers rarely design for themselves. Therefore it is important to learn how to design for other people (clients). However once a designer has a produced a design they will then give it to the manufacturer who will plan and make the design. You will take on both of these roles to gain a better understanding of how design works in the real world. Once your classmate has designed your clock based on your needs and you have designed theirs, both of you will then get to plan and manufacture of the design your designer has come up with. You and your client will have to meet several times throughout the project to discuss what you are doing to ensure you are both happy with what is being produced.

Key for Assessment: Please use this key when completing your log:

(Green) = Successfully achieved the success criteria for this task.

(Amber) = Progressing towards achieving the success criteria

(Red) = My work requires improvement to achieve the success criteria as I am only beginning to develop my skill and understanding in this area.

TASK 1: Writing and Analysing a Design Brief

Nearly every design project will start with a design brief. A design brief outlines the reasons why you want something to be produced and will sometimes include your thoughts of potential things you would like to see included in your design. SWAP BOOKS WITH YOUR PARTENR AND COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING: In the box provided below outline why you need a clock and what you want from your designer. This is called client needs and wants. CLIENT BRIEF

Situation: Problem Brief I have been asked to design and make a clock as part of my S2 design and manufacture course. Although I will make my clock I will not be designing it. To help my partner (designer) with this I have outlined my needs and wants below as well as restrictions on the design that I would like you to consider. Needs: (outline why you need a clock) I would you to design a clock for me because Wants: (is there anything you want included i.e. themes, colour schemes, shapes etc?). I would like it if you could try to include

Brief agreed: Client Signature Designer signature

Success Criteria

• You understand the role of a design brief

• You are able to structure a brief that outlines what you want your designer to cre-ate for you.

• You can analyse a brief to establish what you will need to think about to create a successful end design

HOMEWORK TASK 1 From the client brief and brief analysis you should now have an idea of what your client likes and the kind of person they are? You should alos have an idea of what you can do when making a clock. To help you visualise how you could design and manufacture a clock a good method to generate ideas is to make a mood/product board. Your homework task is to make a mood board/product board that displays images related to what you client likes and clocks available of the market. For EXAMPLE if the client brief looked like this then you might make a mood/product board that looks like the one shown here

The mood/product board would then allows you to see what you might be able to make and allow you think about how can incorporate things the client likes into your design. HOW TO SUBMIT THIS HOMEWORK? You can either: • print it off and bring it in, • email it to your GLOW account or save it on a USB and then print it at

lunchtime in the department or library, • photograph it on your phone and use this when in class.

Client Brief: At present I have a clock in my room. However it is not personal to me and it doesn’t really add anything to the appearance of my room. I would like you to design me some sort of clock that is inter-esting and eye catching. I enjoy music and play Guitar. I also like the colour blue and am a fan of Rugby. My favourite teams are Glasgow Warriors and Scotland. I would be happy with a clock that fits any of these themes.

05

HOMEWORK TASK 3 1. What is the purpose of a mood board and a product board? (2 marks) 2. Why do we need a specification before we can create ideas? (1 mark) 3. What is the quickest way for a designer to demonstrate their ideas? (1 mark) 4. Why do we need to develop ideas ? (1 mark) 5. Why do we need a working drawing before we manufacture an item? (1 mark)

12

HOMEWORK TASK 2 1. Describe what a client is? (1 mark) 2. Describe the difference between the terms “open brief” and “closed brief” (2 marks) 3. Name two advantages of using a mind map to analyse the brief? ( 1 mark) 4. Why is it important that we research what our client want before designing. (1 mark) 5. Describe what Function, Aesthetics and Ergonomics are: (3 marks) FUNCTION:____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________

AESTHETICS:___________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________

ERGONOMICS:________________________________________________________________

TASK 2A Client meeting – Thoughts from research Now that you have conducted your research you are going to meet with your client and show them your mood/product board.

Discuss with your client what things they like from your research and record this in the box below. You should both sign this to confirm that you are happy with what has been discussed.

My client likes:

TASK 2B: Specification You are now going to write your specification. A specification is a list of all the things you must do to ensure your design is successful and will satisfy your Client. Your teacher will demonstrate how to do this. Write your specification in the box below, then meet with your client and decide if they are happy with what it sets out to achieve. If they are not happy, add in any necessary changes and once you are in agreement, sign the specification off. My Design must:

07

TASK 3: INITIAL IDEAS

You are now ready to begin designing. Your task is to come up with three to four ideas and sketch these on A3 paper. However, these ideas cannot be any old idea you dream up, they must relate to the specification in order to solve the client brief. You should also add annotations next to your ideas that explain how they work and how they solve the specification.

An example of this is shown below.

Use your specification, client discussions and research boards to help you gener-ate three to four ideas. You should also use the sketching and rendering skills you learned previously to help you visualise your ideas.

Once you have completed your ideas, meet with your client and discuss what they like/dislike about each. Record your discussion on page 09 in the space pro-vided.

Success Criteria

• I can create 3-4 design ideas that are diverse.

• I can communicate my ideas through sketching and annotations.

TASK 5: Planning for manufacture You are now going to take back control of the design that has been created for you. Using the final design your client has produced and that you have agreed, you are going to begin planning how to manufacture this. Your teacher will take you through how to do this and you will create a working drawing and/or card model template. You must consider the following when undertaking this task:

• What sizes will the MDF and plastic need to be cut to, to create your design?

• How will you join the materials together?

• How will you finish the materials? Your working drawing/card model could look something similar to what is shown below and will be completed on A3 paper / cut-out using the card provided.

10

TASK 3: Initial Ideas meeting Now that you have created ideas from your specification, you are going to show these to your client. Your client will tell you what they like and dislike. This information should then be used to develop your ideas in the next stage of this project. Once complete this must be signed off before moving on.

My client likes and dislikes:

TASK 4: Development of ideas meeting Now that you have developed your ideas based on what your client told you previously, you are going to show these to your client. Your client will tell you what they like and dis-like. This information should then be used to help you decide on a final solution. Once complete this must be signed off before moving on.

My client likes and dislikes:

09

TASK 4: DEVELOPING IDEAS

Based on your client discussion from the ideas stage, you will be developing one or two of your ideas to create a final solution that will satisfy them and the specification. You should also include annotations that show your thoughts as you do one of the following:

1. You may want to develop one idea and make some additions, changes to colour etc to make it better. OR

An example of what your development could look like is shown below. Note there are more developments than you might create to give you ideas about how to ap-proach this.

2.You may want to combine elements of different designs to make one good de-sign. HOWEVER if you are doing this avoid the “Frankenstein” effect. This is where you combine too many parts and end up with something that is strange looking and doesn’t work.

Success Criteria

• You can develop your ideas to improve them and meet the clients needs.

• You can communicate why you are developing your idea linking to the specification
