THE 174 TRUST

Located on Duncairn Avenue/Antrim Road, the Duncairn Centre for Culture

& Arts is North Belfast’s first purpose-built arts and culture “shared space”

venue. The new £3.5 million complex will provide a world-class facility consist-

ing of 3 art studios, exhibition area, community meeting room, 170 seater

theatre/performance area, café/bistro and conference rooms. The Duncairn

will provide a platform for local and international artists to showcase their work

as well as give the local community access to arts and culture programmes of

the highest quality. Over the coming years Duncairn will host music concerts,

dramas, music, dance, arts & craft workshops/masterclasses. Duncairn Centre

for Culture & Arts will be a hub of creativity and a centre of excellence for the

traditional arts of all of our communities.

With the opening of the Duncairn Centre for Culture & Arts, the 174 Trust is

about to embark upon a new and exciting period of service for the North Belfast

community. Since its foundation in 1983 the Trust has sought to “work with

local people, helping them to identify and meet local needs” by providing an

inclusive, non-threatening and safe environment for individuals and groups

to access programmes and to be involved in a wide range of life enriching

activities, where all are valued equally.

Bill has been in post as Director of the 174 Trust for almost sixteen years – during

which time the Trust’s profile (and credibility) in the local community has flourished.

174 Trust – and Bill in particular – is committed to ‘Building Peace and Promoting

Reconciliation’ (he is both passionate and realistic about peace and reconciliation)

through a number of projects, that encourage dialogue and celebrate cultural diversity

within the North Belfast community.

Bill is a passionate follower and admirer of the arts and is determined to see The

Duncairn established as a cultural and creative hub for North Belfast.

Geoff has been involved in Management within the community/voluntary sector since

1986. He has been with 174 Trust since June 2007 as Deputy Director and along with

managing the finances and building complex he enjoys seeing people develop in their

DUNCAIRN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE:BARRY KERR

In January 2014, the 174 Trust decided to sponsor a community artist

in residence at Duncairn. We are delighted to welcome Barry Kerr to

the team. Barry’s studio is located on the ground floor near the main

Antrim Road entrance to the building. This amazing multi-talented artist

will be an important asset to us in helping to build a strong creative

community here in North Belfast. Barry will facilitate a series of music, art

and instrument making workshops/demonstrations throughout the year.

Barry is one of Ireland’s most accomplished traditional musicians. As a

multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and painter he is extremely prolific in his

creative output. Having recorded his first solo album at age seventeen

he has gone on to tour the world both as a solo performer and in the

company of artists such as Cara Dillon, Phil Coulter and At First Light.

His songs and compositions have been recorded by the likes of Karan

Casey, Flook, Beoga, Brian Finnegan, Damian O’Kane, Kate Rusby.

As a painter he is fast becoming an important figure in contemporary

Irish art, exhibiting at home and abroad to high critical acclaim.

‘TRADITIONS FESTIVAL’

Welcome to the DUNCAIRN CENTRE FOR CULTURE & ARTS - North Belfast’s own

world-class arts venue!

Thirteen years in the planning... and now we’re ready to go with an exciting programme

that will officially launch this new facility and bring the arts into the heart of the community.

As the Director of the 174 Trust it’s long been my dream to make drama, music

and the creative arts accessible and allow this medium to create the context for the

exploration of ‘culture and heritage’ - not only enriching lives but helping build peace

though fostering mutual understanding, tolerance and respect.

Fáilte/Welcome to North Belfast and this, the first Bealtaine Traditions Festival at

Duncairn Centre for Culture & Arts.

It is extremely important to all involved with the festival and Duncairn Centre for Culture

& Arts that everyone regardless of religious, social or ethnic background has an

opportunity to enjoy arts and culture and that this amazing facility is a shared space

where all have a voice.

The Festival will bring a prestigious line up of internationally renowned artists to North

Belfast and it is our hope that you will come along to experience, enjoy and be inspired

to get involved in the arts.

The festival is a celebration of traditional Irish, Scottish and American musical culture

that highlights the close links and creative relationship that exists between them.

Fusion

The oldest musical tradition which fits under the label of Celtic fusion originated in

the rural American south in the early colonial period and incorporated Irish, Scottish,

Scots-Irish, Welsh, English, and African influences. Variously referred to as roots music,

American folk music, or old-time music, this tradition has exerted a strong influence on

all forms of American music, including country, blues, and rock and roll. In addition to its

lasting effects on other genres, it marked the first modern large-scale mixing of musical

traditions from multiple ethnic and religious communities within the Celtic diaspora.

We hope that the Traditions Festival will inspire new musical and creative collaborations

here at home and that we can develop this exciting event over the coming years to

showcase the amazing array of creative and artistic talent that exists in our wonderful city.

ROSS AINSLIE & JARLATH HENDERSON

A unique blend of Scottish and Irish newly arranged and composed music for

Uilleann pipes, border pipes, whistle and song, that is an up-to-date, contem-

porary reflection of the state of acoustic traditional music in the 21st Century.

Five years on from their first album, Partners In Crime, Ross Ainslie and

Jarlath Henderson seem to have created, if it were possible, an even closer

musical bond with which their Border pipes and whistles and Uilleann pipes

and whistles, respectively, can both move the listener profoundly and create

an unstoppably exciting momentum.

Arguably the most dynamic double-act on today’s Celtic scene, the Scottish/

Irish piping duo have won huge plaudits for their 2008 debut album, Partners

in Crime, as well as for their brilliantly incendiary live performances.

Ross (Scottish bagpipes, whistles) and Jarlath (Uilleann pipes, whistles) first

started playing together in 2003 at Armagh’s William Kennedy Piping Festival,

and have since joined forces to create a pipe sound that pushes the boundaries

of what both Irish and Scottish instruments can achieve together.

In December 2003, Jarlath became the first Irish musician to win the prestigious

BBC Young Folk Musician of the Year. Ross Ainslie is a former member of the

Grade 1 Vale Of Atholl pipe band. He has since toured with his tutor, the late

Gordon Duncan, and was involved in Ivan Drever’s band Clueless before more

recently playing with Flook!, Dougie MacLean, Salsa Celtica and India Alba.

BUILLE

Buille are set to embark on a rare, five date tour of Ireland from 30th April - 4th May to

mark 10 years of being in existence! The tour will start in the band’s home base of Cork

before heading north to their other home of Armagh, and then onto Belfast, Derry and

finishing up in Naul, Co. Dublin. The band have bucket loads of new material to try out

in preparation for a new album which will be recorded live during the tour so audiences

are in for a treat and a few surprises!

Buille was formed in 2004 by Armagh-born brothers Niall and Caoimhín Vallely as a

vehicle to perform a body of new music composed by Niall. The music was based on

traditional forms but freely borrowed stylistic elements from various genres including

jazz, blues, Eastern European music and contemporary classical music. The resultant

sound was picked up on by Donald Shaw from the group Capercaillie, who immediately

offered to produce and release the group’s debut album on his Vertical Records label.

The album was released to widespread critical acclaim and received universal rave

reviews. The Irish Times wrote: “Buille is as fresh a breath that’s blown through traditional

(and roots) circles in a long, long time.” While Irish Music Magazine described it as “a

classic of new Irish music.”

The group went on to tour extensively across Ireland, the UK, Europe, North America,

and Russia, and along the way performed at such prestigious festivals as Celtic Con-

nections in Glasgow, Festival de Cornouaille in Quimper, Brittany, Beo Festival at the

National Concert Hall, Dublin, and the Winnipeg Folk Festival in Canada.

and Brian Morrissey (bodhran).

BRÉAG AGUS CAIRDE

Belfast based Bréag are celebrating 20 years this year and are joined on

stage with Kíla, John Spillane and special guest in a night to remember.

Formed initially to raise money for local Irish language schools, Bréag have emerged

as one of the most refined and original acts of their kind. They have brought Irish on

the world stage with their unique mix of reggae, ska, rock and world music and gained

a loyal following among Irish speakers and beyond. Over the last two decades, having

performed all over the world, Bréag have developed a Celtic fusion never before heard.

The first generation of urban Gaelic speakers in modern Belfast, their Gaelic heritage

permeates through their lyrics and music. Bréag give the listener a unique musical

experience that attracts dancers to the dancer floor all night long.

IMIRCE

Hosted by BBC Northern Ireland’s Lynette Fay, this is a celebration of the vast

repertoire of Irish emigration songs performed by some of Ireland’s most prolific

vocalists. Each song has a story. Love, loss, the search for a better life, hope and

despair. All of these emotions are brought to life in the beautiful performances of songs

which explore this island’s emigration story, past and present.

FREE MASTERCLASSES, WORKSHOPS, EXHIBITIONS &

LUNCHTIME FILM

Throughout the Festival we will be hosting a series of free events including

music master classes, workshops as well as an exhibition of new work from

our resident artist Barry Kerr.

From 12.30pm – 1.30pm Fri - Sun we will be showing a series of traditional

Irish and Scottish music films/documentaries in the theatre. All welcome.

FREDDIE WHITE

Freddie White has long been synonymous with music of the highest quality.

Whether interpreting songs by his favourite writers, such as Randy Newman,

Tom Waits, John Hiatt and Guy Clark, or performing his own classy compositions,

Freddie’s live performances are nothing short of legendary.

Freddie has been part of the fabric of the live music scene in Ireland since

the 1970’s and his albums continue to sell well, amongst his loyal and new-

found fan base.

Born in Cobh, County Cork into a musical family, by age thirteen Freddie was

playing in school bands and by seventeen playing professionally. At nineteen,

he moved to London, where he busked in subways, and developed his unique

voice and guitar style.

SEAMUS BEGLEY & JIM MURRAY

Séamus Begley is one of the most popular Irish traditional musicians, coming

as he does from one of the most musically acclaimed Irish families. He is the

quintessential Irish musician, an eager storyteller known for his sharp wit and

famous for pumping out tune after tune at all night sessions. His repertoire

reflects his own place and his style of playing is much influenced by a now

gone generation of accordion and fiddle players who came to céilí in his family

home. Seamus’s style is unique and he is considered by many to be one of

the finest players of the dance music of West Kerry and is never happier than

when people are dancing to his music.

Jim Murray is one of Ireland’s finest guitarists and his formidable reputation

has been established as a player of traditional music - both as a melody player

and as an accompanist.

In 2001 Séamus and Jim released their first album, the highly acclaimed

‘Ragairne’ which was winner of the 2001 Hot Press Magazine ‘Folk and Trad

Album of the Year’ and The Irish Times ‘Traditional album of the Year’. Their

highly anticipated second album, Eiri Go La was released in Early 2009 and

has received rave reviews to date.

The focus is reading for pleasure and sharing stories that allow people to connect – it’s

simple and enjoyable, but with huge benefits including improved literacy, good mental

health, and social connections between people who might otherwise never have met.

Reading Rooms has been brought to The Duncairn in partnership with the Verbal Arts

Centre in Derry and the expertise of The Reader Organisation in Liverpool.

Stories at The Duncairn: a new project bringing storytelling, creative writing and shared

reading to North Belfast.
