The following 93 loTs are from The privaTe collecTion of commander B.c. Tuson and his daughTer-in-law, vicToria susan Brain.

Commander Tuson always had an interest in antiques from a very early age and started concentrating more on Asian antiques when he was posted to Singapore as a Naval Officer in the early 1970s.

Throughout his naval tours and in later years, Commander Tuson’s interest in all types of Asian antiquities continued to grow, encompassing Chinese, Japanese and South East Asian antiques. In conjunction with his daughter-in-law, his passion for Oriental art and antiques continued up until his death in 2013. This is a portion of the objects collected over the last 50 years from the combined ‘Tuson-Brain’ collection.

These arms were borne by the family of Waterhouse and Halifax in Yorkshire, largely descended from Sir Gilbert Waterhouse, of Kirton in Lincolnshire, living in Henry III's reign. However some members of the Waterhouse family were among the early migrant to America, George being there c.1672 and Benjamin, co-founder of the Harvard Medical School, 1754 to 1846. It is rare to find underglaze blue in conjunction with canton famille rose and even rarer to find the decoration with a Jiaqing reign mark of the period. On 24 August 1866 he was consecrated at canterbury cathedral as bishop of Nelson, on Sept 26 1867 he arrived in Nelson on board the cissy with four other clergy. in his first few years he created the archdeaconry of Marlborough and established the theological college at bishopdale. the following fiVe lotS haVe come from the teutenberg family. they were in the poSSeSSion of fredericK teutenberg (1831–1896).

The following is related through the family as there are scant records of his life.

Frederick was an engraver, taxidermist and a mercenary. He fought in Persia, for a dare pulled the veil of a Muslim lady down and nearly got lynched for his trouble. He also fought in Mexico and the Mosquito coast. He came to New Zealand in 1862 with Von Tempsky, but whether he fought with the Forrest Rangers is unknown. After this very little is known of him. A small entry in the Auckland Star dated 7 Feb 1896 lists he was a designer for his sister’s needlework. (Franziska Teutenberg).

this prow was exhibited at and on loan to, the Museum of te papa tongarewa for the exhibition ‘Mana Whenua’

(feb 1998–feb 2003). however the prow was actually lodged with te papa on 10th feb 1960 to 2003, then extended until 2013.

Provenance: the vendor’s great-great-grandparents were born sometime during the years of 1775-1790. When they secured the waka prow it could have already been 40-50 years old, so accordingly we can speculate its age to be around 1750s onwards.

M20 A RARE COLLECTION FROM fiOrdLaNd (thE LOSt triBE) 18TH C. STONE ARTEFACTS found in the late 1920s around Lake Te Anau and the upper reaches of the Waiau river. These areas were known to have been used by the local Ngati Mamoe tribe (renowned as the ‘Lost tribe of fiordland’). during the 18th Century they were engaged in a war with Ngai Tahu led by Te Hau, and eventually defeated in a battle at Dock Bay across the lake from the Te Anau township. they fled to the Murchison Mountains, Dusky Bay, Lake Friendless, and then dispersed throughout the Fiordland region.

A number of sightings of the Ngati Mamoe have been recorded by Europeans. During Captain Cook’s second voyage on board The resolution, William hodges executed his famous painting ‘A View in Dusky Bay, New Zealand’ (1773), the romantic depiction of a Maori on a rock. In 1851 Captain Stokes of the Acheron noted footprints in Bligh’s Sound when he visited. No other sightings have been noted since.
