Stories of huge arm like tentacles grasping stunned and hopeless sailors startle people around the world. The hideous beast plunges into the ocean, arms and all, and disappears into the dark depths of the sea, never to be seen again. What is the mystery behind these massive impacts that all men, women, and children fear? What is the secret below the deeper depths of the ocean blue that scientists have not yet discovered? What awaits us deep down in the waters that are no longer safe? Is it the Dumbo octopus with ear like fins protruding from their sides? Or is it because it bears a terrible truth that will never be revealed? Or is it because Grimpoteuthis are adapted to the deeper parts of the ocean in various ways? Known as the Dumbo octopus, the Grimpoteuthis are Benthic Sea creatures. They are named after the Disney character “Dumbo” because of their earlike fins. However, little is known about the Grimpoteuthis because of its ability to live 3,000-4,000 meters below sea level (9,800-13,000 feet). Scientists have only known 17 classes of these rare octopod species, yet, they are found around the waters of New Zealand, Monterrey Bay, Oregon, Philippines, New Guinea, and many other places around the globe. They are bathyal creatures and hover above the surface, looking for food such as crustaceans, amphipods, isopods, copepods, polychaetes, and other miniature sea creatures. Their abnormal shaped fins support their motion underwater because by thrashing their fins and pumping water through their funnels in order to move, they create motion. A few other adaptations that they have in order to survive are suckers which form a line down each webbed arm and ink sacs, which are generally oblivious and are used to confuse raiders. Their fins are reinforced by an inner shell, and that is what protects it from approaching predators. Pulsing their webbed arms, they hover above the surface, searching for food. Female Grimpoteuthis do not have a special breeding season, which concludes that females reproduce often throughout the stages of their life. Grimpoteuthis are remarkable animals that have adapted to the deeper depths of the ocean in numerous ways, and there is still further research that has to be done in order to know their true secrets that still lay in the deepest and darkest depths of the ocean blue.
