READING SKILL [SEEN]
1. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :
I was travelling in a bus. It was a bitterly cold night, and even at the far end
of the bus the east wind cut like a knife. The bus stopped and two woman
and a man got in together and filled the vacant places. The younger woman
carried a little Pekinese dog. The conductor came in and took their fares.
Then his eyes rested on the beady-eyed dog. I saw trouble coming up. This
was the opportunity for which the conductor had been waiting, and he intended
to make the most of it. I had marked him as the type who had a general
vague grievance about everything. He seemed to have a particular grievance
against passengers who came and sat in his bus while he shivered at the door.
“You must take that dog out,” he said.
“I shall certainly do nothing of the kind. You can take my name and address,
“said the woman she had evidently expected the challenge and knew the
reply.
“You must take the dog out — that’s my order.”

“I won’t go on the top of the bus in such weater. It would kill me,” said the
woman.
“Certainly not,” said her lady companion. “You’ve got a cough as it is.”
“It’s nonsense,” said her male campanion. Stopped. “This bus doesn’t go on
until that dog is brought out. He stepped on to the pavement and waited. It
was his moment of triumph. He had the law on his sid. Everybody in the bus
was on the side of the lady and her dog. They talked in raised voices.
“Shameful”
“Call the poice !”
“Let’s all report him !”
“Let’s make him give us our fares back.”

The casement all day,
And from the mossy elm-tree takes
The faded leaves away,
Twirling them by the window pane
With thousand others down the lane.

Dance till the shut of eve

Curl upwards through the naked trees.

3. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow :
What writers struggle to express through numerous newspaper columns, the
cartoon manages in a pointed one liner. Little wonder then, that the first
thing most of us like to see when we pick up a newspaper is the cartoon.
Simple though it may seem, making a cartoon is an art that requires a
combination of hardwork, training and a good sense of humour. cartoonists
say that the cartoon that make us laugh the most are in fact the cartoons that
are hardest to make. Even celebrated cartoonists like R. K. Laxman admits
that making a cartoon is not a piece of cake. Laxman says he has to wait for
over six hours, which includes spending a lot of time scanning newspapers
and television channels before any idea strikes him.
So how does one become a cartoonist ? Which of us has the talent to make
it ? How can we master the rib-tickling strokes and the witty one liners /
How can we make people smitl or laugh ? There are few colleges or schools

for cartoonists. Most artoonists come from art college, while some learn
the craft on their own. Most established one of the view that no cartoonists
can teach you to make a cartoon. “You can pick up the craft, you may learn
to sketch and draw in institutes but no one can teach you how to make a
good carton” says Uday Shankar, a cartoonist with Navbharat Times. While
basics, like drawing and sketching can be learnt in an art college and are
important skills, these alone, do not make a good cartoonist. Because it’s
a question of one’s creativity and sense of humour; two qualities on simple
may not have. The advice established cartoonists give is that just because
you can sketch, don’t take it for granted that you will become a cartoonist.
