Celebrating 30 YearsThe Duluth Fall Festival Committee invites you to visit Historic Downtown Duluth Thursday, September 27 through Sunday, Septem-ber 30 for the Gold Medal Shows Carnival and the Duluth Fall Festival. Since the first annual Festival, in 1983, it has created a high level of excitement, pride, and optimism focused on Downtown Duluth. Although 2012 is the thirtieth anniversary of the Duluth Fall Festival, the roots grow even deeper. In 1962, 50 years ago, the very first festi-val was held in the streets of Downtown Duluth. That fes-tival lasted for five weekends and spotlighted the town’s history. Another successful festival was held in 1976 to celebrate the centennial of

Duluth’s charter, and the bicentennial of our nation. These first two festivals evolved into the great event that we have today.

Gold Medal Shows Carnival

Gold Medal Shows’ Car-nival opens pre-Festival, Thursday and Friday, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and then continues all day Saturday and Sunday until the end of the Festival. Special Offer for Thurs-day and Friday only: Gold Medal Shows is offering a buy 1 get 1 free armband for unlimited rides. Print a cou-pon from www.duluthfallfes-tival.org or present the origi-nal coupon or the one shown on page 7.

Duluth Fall Festival Both Saturday and Sun-day start with a special

opening event kicking off the day’s festivities. Saturday, at 10 a.m., the Festival officially opens, starting with a fantastic parade celebrating Duluth’s sense of community. The parade, sponsored by Amer-ican Family Insurance, fea-tures more than 100 colorful groups, including: drill teams, cheerleaders, sports teams, dance troupes, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, politi-cians, first responders, sol-diers and musicians. Partici-pants travel the parade route tossing candy and waving to spectators. Immediately after the parade, join us at the Duluth Festival Center Amphitheatre to honor local dignitaries and generous sponsors in the Opening Ceremony. Sunday, at 8 a.m., the day

starts with a 5K Road Race, promising this year to be big-ger than ever. The race is fol-lowed by an outdoor worship service on the Town Green at the Duluth Festival Center. This is led by Duluth First United Methodist Church. After the day’s opening events, stay and browse the Festival grounds. You will enjoy almost 400 vendors from the southeast featur-ing unique fine arts and crafts as well as all kinds of wonderful food. A variety of entertainment will run continuously on two stages including: music, dancing, singing, and acrobatics.

Beautification of Duluth Proceeds from the Festival are used towards improving and beautifying Historic Downtown Duluth. The Festi-val has spearheaded numer-ous special projects, including purchasing and developing Taylor Park and arched entry-way, paving and landscaping the Festival Center Courtyard, increasing the size of the pub-lic restrooms, purchasing planters, landscaping the streets of Duluth, and install-ing the Eastern Continental Divide Monument. By far, the largest Festival undertaking was building the Duluth Festival Center Amphitheatre. It was built as a complementary addition to the city’s Town Green.

Community Fellowship Developing relationships and promoting fellowship is another important goal of the Festival. In a world where many people don’t know their

own neighbor and seek com-munity roots, the Festival is proud to provide a pathway for developing life-long friendships and community connections. To promote these budding friendships, the Festival organi-zation sponsors many activities throughout the year, including: monthly meetings, downtown work days, a Summer Rally, an annual cookout, the Festival Taste of Duluth, a community luncheon (for sponsors, volun-teers, city workers, first responders, and others), a com-munity Christmas Tree Light-ing, and, the Duluth New Year’s Eve celebration.

Growth of the Duluth Fall Festival

The Duluth Fall Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. From its humble beginning in 1983, the Festi-val has grown and changed immensely. In 1985, the first official

T-shirts were donated by Tom Martin of Citizen’s Bank. They are still a much sought-after item, and many sponsors join the Festival ranks just to get their names on the shirt. The Sponsorship committee was created in 1997, and now the Festival has more than 100 sponsors who, when com-bined, contribute more than $100,000 every year. Today, the Duluth Fall Festival is one of the most suc-cessful festivals in the south-east, and, one of the few festi-vals of this size that is run completely by volunteers. If you are interested in vol-unteering with the Festival, we would love to have you. For more information, visit our Web site at www.duluthfallfes-tival.org. You can sign up online, contact the Member-ship committee at [email protected], or see any volunteer.

About the Duluth Fall Festival

PARADE The traditional Duluth Fall Festival Parade kicks off the Festival at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. More than 100 groups will participate in the Parade, including: cheerleaders, sports teams, dance troupes, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, politi-cians, first responders and musicians. Duluth’s two High Schools, Duluth and Peachtree Ridge, will be represented by their respective marching bands.

Parade Route: The Parade starts on Main Street (near the Monarch School), continues south and east to Highway 120, turns south to Buford Highway, and ends at Hardy Industrial Boulevard (see the Duluth Fall Festival map).

Grand Marshal – Eddie Owen

Grand Marshal of the 2013 Parade is legendary music promoter Eddie Owen. Last Fall, he opened “Eddie Owen Presents,” at the Red Clay Theatre in Downtown Duluth. This newly open venue is changing the local night-life by provid-ing live concerts for all musical tastes.

Since 1981, Owen has been discovering and nurturing musician-songwriters in the Atlanta area. Owen has been instrumental in launching the careers of several now-famous musicians, including, The Indigo Girls, John Mayer, Sugarland, Shawn Mullins, The Civil Wars, and many more. The Festival is honored to have Owen as Grand Marshal, celebrating the renewed level of excitement that he has created in Duluth.

For more information and show dates, go to:

www.eddieowenpresents.com

Honorary Grand Marshal – Tom Martin

The Festival Committee is proud to name one of Duluth’s native sons as the 2012 Duluth Fall Festival Honorary Grand Marshal. No one could deserve this honor more than Tom Martin, of Gwinnett Community Bank. He has supported the Festival for all 30 years and was its very first sponsor. In 1985, Tom originated the idea and purchased the first Duluth Fall Festival T-shirts. Each year thereafter (until Citi-zen’s Bank was sold), he furnished the Festival shirts and was a major sponsor. Since Tom opened Gwinnett Community Bank, thirteen years ago, it has been the Festival’s very top sponsor every year. Tom grew up in Duluth and attended Duluth High School, DeKalb College and Georgia State University. He graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University. Tom’s banking career began in 1963 as a teller at the Bank of Duluth. He was promoted to President at the age of 28 and continued there (after a buy-out by BankSouth) until 1983. Tom opened Citizen’s Bank of Gwinnett in 1984. He sold Citizen’s Bank in 1997 and opened Gwinnett Com-munity Bank in 1999, still in Downtown Duluth. Tom contin-ues today as Chairman of the Board there, and his son, John, Festival Treasurer, is President. Thank you, Tom, for all of the years that you have sup-ported us, and the City of Duluth, in such a huge way!

Opening Ceremony Immediately after the Parade, join us at the Festival Center Amphitheatre in the Opening Ceremony. The Parade Grand Marshal, Eddie Owen, Honorary Grand Marshal, Tom Martin, soldiers from Fort Benning, and other local dignitaries, will be honored. The Opening Cer-emony is also the Festival’s opportunity to acknowledge our generous sponsors, without whom, the Festival and its many improvement projects would not be possible.

Grand Marshal, Eddie Owen

Some of the most stirring moments of Duluth Fall Festival have been viewing visiting sol-diers from Ft. Benning march through the Parade and then take the stage during the Open-ing Ceremony. If you missed being a part of these patriotic moments in the past, you’ll have

another chance this Saturday. Arrive early to get your spot along the Parade route and cheer on the soldiers from the 1st Bat-talion, 15th Infantry Regiment. After the Parade, be sure to attend the Opening Ceremony where the 1-15 soldiers will be recognized for their service to our country. The Festival’s association with Fort Benning’s soldiers began in 2003 when Kathy Orcutt, a long-time Festival vol-

unteer, suggested the idea to the Festival’s Executive Board. A bond was immediately formed between the patriotic communi-ty of Duluth and these soldiers. Every year since 2003, Orcutt, along with Russ Sheldon and Hugs for Our Soldiers (the Festi-val’s Military Sponsor founded

by Orcutt), have spearheaded the efforts to honor the troops. The main body of the 1-15 is facing the dangers of war once again as they are currently deployed for their fifth time. “We want to make sure everyone remembers them. I invite all Festival-goers to stop by Hugs for Our Soldiers’ booth, to the right of the stage, to sign a banner we’ll ship overseas. You can also shake the hands of our troops who are currently home, try on their Kev-lar and helmet to experience the weight they carry every day dur-ing deployment, and learn how to send a care package to a sol-dier,” Orcutt said To learn more about how you can support our troops of all branches of service, visit www.hugsforoursoldiers.org.

Festival Welcomes Soldiers for the Tenth Straight Year

About the Cover Since 1985, all tabloid covers have featured Duluth or fall-themed art-work created by a local artist. This year’s cover was created by lifelong Du-luth resident Ann Parsons Odum. Over the years, Ann’s paintings have been used many times. This year Ann will be selling her book on Duluth History, featuring her Duluth paintings, at the Festival General Store with much of the proceeds going to projects of the Festival Committee.

About the Festival T-Shirt Each year, the Festival T-shirt color is a long anticipated surprise. The 2012 T-shirt design and the Duluth Fall Festival logo were created by Duluth resident Cindy Sutt of Rock, Paper, Scissors. The color of the shirt is always selected by the current Festival Chairperson, this year Kathryn Willis.

More than 250 carefully selected artisans and crafts persons will participate in the Duluth Fall Festival this year. Vendors offer a variety of merchandise, including: paintings, photographs, wood crafts, pottery, glassware, furniture, floral arrangements, stitchery, candles, soap, decorative accessories, baskets, clothing (for adults, children, dollies, and doggies!), jewelry, toys, and more. Caution: You won’t go home empty-handed! Several Arts & Crafts vendors return to the Festival year after year (Bill Crissey, of Gwinnett Gallery has participated in all 30 Festivals!). When possible, returning vendors are located in the same general area. However, if you have trouble finding a specific vendor, visit the Information Booth on Main Street or ask a Zone Coordinator (a volunteer with a walkie–talkie) for help. The Arts & Crafts committee works hard to have a unique variety of merchandise. This year, the committee reviewed more than 330 vendor applications. Most vendors are local or from the across the southeast. However, with our growing reputation as one of the top festivals in the southeast, we are fortunate enough to have one vendor from as far away as Ohio.

General Store & Decorations Auction The Fall Festival General Store invites you to stop by and browse for all things Fall. The General Store has an extensive and interesting array of fall merchandise as well as Festival T-Shirts from previous years. To commemorate the 30th Anniver-sary of the Duluth Fall Festival, the General Store will have a collection of the old Festival Tabloids that provide an amazing look at the evolution of the Festival as well as Duluth. Besides being your Festival merchandise headquarters, the General Store is also an easily spotted landmark and meeting place. It is centrally located on Main Street, decorated with mums, pumpkins and scarecrows. For several years, the Duluth Fall Festival General Store has been sponsored by Lou Sobh Automotive. Auction: Be sure to go to the General Store at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday when Brooks Coleman fires up an auction of the mums and pumpkins used to decorate the Festival.

Come hungry, but you won’t go home hun-gry! With more than 50 food booths, you are certain to find many treats to please your palate. Start with an entrée, such as a corndog, pierogie, gyro or fried ‘gator. As always, the Fall Festival’s own hotdog stand, featuring our famous “Big Pickle” will be here, too. Wash it down with a glass of lemonade, cream soda, slushy or milkshake. Top it off with your favorite sweet indulgence—perhaps a funnel cake, apple dumpling, or sno cone. And, don’t for-get to snack on some kettle corn while you browse. With all of these culinary opportunities, you can eat your way around the Festival.

When you are ready to take a break, get your food “To Go” and relax at one of two picnic

areas while you enjoy the entertainment at one of our two stages.

FESTIVAL FIRST AID STATION: Duluth Fall Festival has the most comprehensive First Aid Station of any festival around. It is manned 100% by healthcare Professionals from Gwinnett Medical Center - Duluth. This year, they will also have the Gwinnett County EMS Bike Team patrolling the area, with ambulances on call for emergencies. And as always, the GMC Care-A-Van will be on-site at the booth location. All of the First Aid volunteers will wear red shirts with the First Aid Symbol on the back. This group is headed up by Cheryl MacMillan, assisted by Linda Bailey and over 2 dozen GMC-Duluth RN's. The hospital has provided this outstanding service for many years. There has never been a major emergency health problem in past festivals, however, thanks to GMC-Duluth, we are always prepared! The Duluth Fall Festival Committee is very grateful to Gwinnett Medical Center-Duluth. Many of the staff are volunteers of the Festival, including Administrator, Lea Bay. They also allow us to use one of their parking lots for our shuttle service, plus are always a Major Sponsor of the Festival.

If you need help while you are visiting the Festival, need assistance locating a specific vendor, or if you lose an item (or a child), stop by the Information, Lost, & Found booth located on Main Street in front of the General Store. You can also ask any volunteer for assistance. First aid is available at the Gwinnett Hospital System Care-A-Van located behind Huthmaker’s Violins.

Looking Back Thirty Years

2012 is the 30th Anniversary of Duluth Fall Festival and we find ourselves looking back over those years. The first festival, held in October of 1983, was rainy and cold and netted only $300. Despite these setbacks, the decision was made to make it an annual event.

Almost every year, something monumental has been added to or provided by the Festival as shown in the following timeline:1984 Newspaper tabloid1985 Festival T-shirts Citizens Bank of Gwinnett1987 Miss Duluth Pageant1988 Silent Auction1987 Most needed Committee - Clean-up1990 became Non-profit 501(c)31993 Concert1995 New stage 1996 Taylor Park purchased1997 Sponsor Committee - Festival expands to Two days2000 Website launched2001 Town Green & Festival Center open2002 Shuttle Service2003 Military added2006 Built & landscaped Courtyard2009 Park entrance and sponsor board2010 Gold Medal Shows Carnival2011 Eastern Continental Divide Monument2012 Final payment for Festival Center (total $1,300,000.00)

Over the years, the Duluth Fall Festival has grown in numbers and in scope. The number of volunteers is nearly 400, working on more than 50 commit-tees. Only space limits the number of Arts & Crafts and Food booths, which now numbers 360. It has been chosen Best Festival in Gwinnett for the last several years and best in the entire area by other publications. All of us urge you to come to our 30th Anniversary Festival. It promises to be the very best in our 30 year history!
