We also offer regular departures of small groups of students undertaking their Duke of Ed

award journeys independently during school holidays.

You can choose to canoe, kayak, hike or mountain bike your way to the Award. We also offer

combination programs that add interest, challenge and more fun to your outdoor education

o Program: Canoeing flat water on the Myall Lakes, this program focuses on skills development with students coached in basic canoeing and survival skills while journeying from one beautiful campsite to another.

o The Myall Lakes is one of the state's largest coastal lake systems, it’s a wetland of international significance with 40km of lakes, beaches and rolling sand dunes.

o Suitable for Bronze Practice Expeditions

Location: Barrington River – Barrington to Bulliac o Program: This program allows students the opportunity to extend their canoeing skills in

Grade 1 moving water, paddling 20km on the Barrington River from Poley’s Place to Bulliac. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification journey, students are in charge of their own expedition and are required to navigate, determine lunch locations and maintain equipment. Guides provide a careful eye ensuring safe decision making.

o Suitable for Bronze Test Expeditions

Three day / Two night programs Location: Barrington River – Never Never to The Laneway

o Program: This program uses The Steps campground as basecamp for an expedition on the Barrington River between Never Never and The Laneway, located just prior to Barrington Bridge. It allows students the opportunity to focus on skills development, river reading and river safety. Due to the gradient fall of the river, students progress further up the river each day to more challenging sections. Students do not camp out of heir boats, however further campcraft skills are targeted in dry sessions at The Steps.

o Suitable for Silver Practice Expeditions

Location: Manning River – Bretti Reserve to Tiri Bridge o Program: The Manning River provides an unfamiliar environment for students to test their

navigation and river reading skills as they paddle from Bretti Reserve to Tiri Bridge on Grade 2 moving water. Students camp out of their canoes and are responsible for all aspects of their journey with support from guides and teachers. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification journey, students demonstrate skills developed in previous expeditions.

Four day / Three night programs Location: Barrington River – Cobark Junction to Barrington Reserve

o Program: This program uses The Steps campground as basecamp for an expedition on the Barrington River between Cobark Junction to Barrington Reserve. Camping equipment is transported to the campground separately so students are free to focus on skills development and river reading. Paddling is on some familiar stretches of the river plus some new and more technical sections, so students are challenged and rewarded with rapid skills progression.

o Suitable for Gold Practice Expeditions

Location: Nymboida River o Program: The Nymboida River provides an exciting expedition site, paddling a remote

stretch of grade 2-3 white water. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification journey, students bring together all the skills developed over previous expeditions and are assessed on: extensive planning on what to bring, water management, navigation, portaging and expedition camping skills.

o A planning workshop is held with participants prior to the expedition, allowing maximum preparation for this challenging journey. As with previous test expeditions, students run their own program with close and careful supervision from our instructors.

o Suitable for Gold Test Expeditions

o Program: This program rapidly educates students with the essential skills for safe hiking in the Australian bush. Using navigation courses at The Steps and at Copeland Tops, students traverse marked trails as well as unmarked bush. The skills learnt offer a lifetime of hiking enjoyment.

Location: Copeland Tops State Conservation Area o Program: Students hike over the rainforest-clad Mount Prince Charlie and camp overnight

at a private campsite atop Copeland Tops with views of the distant ocean. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification expedition, participants are challenged and rewarded, encountering a rich variety of forest types including riparian, wet rainforest, dry forest and open woodlands.

Three day / Two night programs Location: Brisbane Waters National Park, Hawkesbury River

o Program: Students get to experience a spectacular section of the renowned Great North Walk, hiking through the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park past Jerusalem Bay to arrive at Brooklyn on the Hawkesbury River. After crossing the majestic river by ferry, participants continue hiking through the Brisbane Waters National Park and finish in the Ourimbah Valley. If used as a Duke of Ed practice expedition, this program extends the skills developed at the bronze level.

o Suitable for Silver Practice Expeditions

Location: Barrington Tops National Park o Program: Students hike through Barrington Tops World Heritage wilderness area, camping

overnight at famous favourites like Polblue, Munro Hut, Wombat Creek and Junction Pools. Camping atop this magnificent national park is an unbeatable outdoor education experience, it’s like another world. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification expedition this program focuses on skills development with increased challenge.

Four day / Three night programs Location: Tops to Myall Heritage Trail

o Program: This program follows a section of the little-known Tops to Myall Heritage Trail. Following marked and unmarked trails, this exclusive route stretches from the subalpine areas of Barrington Tops National Park, through mountainous rainforests and sheltered subtropical gullies. If used as a Duke of Ed practice expedition, this hike challenges participants like no other in the Park.

o Suitable for Gold Practice Expeditions

Location: Milford Track, New Zealand o Program: This is the gold standard for hiking, with students from all over the world making

the pilgrimage to the Milford Track. Described as "the finest walk in the world", this is one of New Zealand's most popular walks, and for good reason. The qualification journey itself is four days and three nights, although the total time away including transfers makes this trip six days and five nights. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification expedition, this amazing journey can be enhanced with some extra time in spectacular Queenstown or a sea kayak adventure through the fjordlands. Just brilliant!

o Program: This program is based at The Steps with its purpose-built single track network offering the ideal location for students to develop good biking techniques and essential skills. Additional rides are taken at the nearby Copeland Tops Conservation Area. If used as a Duke of Ed practice expedition, participants are also coached in outdoor expedition skills that are crucial to their future Award qualifications.

Location: Dharug National Park o Program: Students ride challenging and intriguing trails through a rugged sandstone

landscape in this park located on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. The area is steeped in history with aboriginal and colonial sites of significance found throughout. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification expedition, participants test their skills developed through their Bronze practice and encounter habitats of open forest, rainforest, scrub, heath, reedlands and mangroves.

Three day / Two night programs

Location: Copeland Tops Conservation Area and Kiwarrak State Park o Program: This program uses trails at Copeland Tops Conservation Area and Kiwarrak State

Forest for intensive biking skills development. Kiwarrak offers brilliant, flowing trails that swoop and weave through the sclerophyll forest on a world class network. Students develop their bike handling skills rapidly and also experience some out-of-saddle skills with bush mechanic workshops plus they gain growing competency in outdoor survival skills. If used as a Duke of Ed practice expedition, participants extends the skills developed in the bronze expeditions.

Location: Barrington Tops National Park and Copeland Tops Conservation Area.

Program: Students ride out of the forest-clad mountains of the World Heritage listed Barrington Tops. After overnighting on the summit at our private remote mountain campsite, they commence the descent by mountain bike, following trails which lead down to The Steps campground on the Barrington River. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification journey, it provides an exciting challenge to test the skills developed over the course of the award program.

o Program: This program is run at Mungo Brush and focuses on developing skills for hiking, canoeing and outdoor survival, all coached by our experienced instructors. Students are challenged by the combination of one day hiking plus one day canoeing.

o As one of the state's largest coastal lake systems with 40km of beaches and sand dunes, Myall Lakes is a one of the most visited parks in NSW. Students are spellbound by the beauty of this environment as they encounter various habitats such as heathlands, freshwater wetlands and dry eucalypt forests.

Three day / Two night programs Location: Wallingat National Park

o Program: Students complete their journey by hiking through the Wallingat National Park on marked and unmarked trails, then paddling on the Wallingat River and Wallace Lake. If used as a Duke of Ed practice expedition this program focuses on skills development with increased challenge.

o The Wallingat National Park boasts magnificent views of coastline. Students are challenged and rewarded as they hike through eucalypt forests, cabbage palm and flooded gum forests.

Location: Barrington River, Copeland Tops Conservation Area o Program: Students hike over Copeland Tops and Mount Prince Charlie to overnight at the

riverside campground at The Steps. Their expedition then continues by canoe down the renowned Barrington River through grade 1 and grade 2 rapids. Students are challenged and rewarded, encountering a rich variety of forest types including; riparian, wet rainforest, dry rainforest and open eucalypt woodlands.

Location: Barrington Tops National Park, Copeland Tops Conservation Area and Barrington River. o Program: Students hike out of the Barrington Tops National Park, over the Copeland Tops

Conservation Area and down into one of the more remote stretches of the upper Barrington River. In the final leg, student skills will be challenged in negotiating the Grade 1 and Grade 2 rapids in white water kayaks along the more technical stretches of the river.

o The Barrington River is a well known river throughout Australia for white water enthusiasts offering not only a beautiful environments with crystal waters but also known as arguably one of the best beginner white water rivers in the country.

Location: Brisbane Waters National Park, Jilliby State Conservation Area and Ourimbah State Forest.

o Program: Hiking through the Brisbane Water National Park and Jilliby Conservation Area students camp two nights in remote locations before climbing onto mountain bikes to ride out of the forest. Following various trails and a world class single track this expedition provides majestic views in a challenging hike as well as fun, skilful and technical biking. Students enjoy being challenged and developing new skills rapidly.

o Brisbane Waters National Park is set in a rugged sandstone landscape, with magnificent views of the Hawkesbury River as well as Brisbane Waters. o Program: Students are challenged to extend their skills as they change between mountain biking and hiking. With multiple mountain biking sections in this expedition, students ride a combination of trails as well as world class flowing single track. This program challenges with some good climbs off the bikes, and rewards with amazing views of the Central Coast, Hunter Valley and the dreamy beauty of the Watagans Ranges.

Location: Barrington Tops National Park and Copeland Tops Conservation Area. o Program: Students hike through the Barrington Tops National Park, a rugged park full of

contrasts. After the challenge of hiking through this thick, wild and varied environment, students switch to mountain biking over Copeland Tops and descend into the relative comforts of our riverside camp at The Steps on the Barrington River. If used as a Duke of Ed qualification journey it provides an exciting challenge to test the skills developed over the course of the award program.
