1 Newsletter No. 25 - Term 3 Week 5 Thursday 14 th August 2014 Due to full Production rehearsals, we will not be holding assembly on Monday. See you all at the Theatre on Tuesday & Wednesday nights. From the Principal………….. 5 SLEEPS TO PRODUCTION!!! The school is buzzing with excitement with Production looming next week. Lots of singing and dancing is happening in every spare space in the school. Costumes have been made, and broken, and re-made, but will look spectacular on the night. Photos are being taken and on Tuesday, during the day, we have our final dress rehearsal, all ready for our opening night on Tuesday evening. I do hope everyone has their tickets for all the family. There are still some spots if you have not yet invited grandparents and aunts and uncles. The website is listed on page 4 of this newsletter to book your tickets. OUR SISTER SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS Some of you may have read the newspaper article in The Herald Sun yesterday regarding sister school partnerships with Asian schools. The Victorian Education Department encourages schools to form strong links with Asian schools. We are very proud to have two sister schools; one in India and one in Japan. On 1 st September Richard Lambert, Dani Thomas and Russell Monaghan will travel to Bangalore and our sister school, Jain International Residential School (JIRS). These teachers will work with the teachers at JIRS on forming communication links using ICT. Teachers at JIRS and teachers at Kalinda are very keen to be able to communicate at all levels of the school, including Leadership, teachers learning from each other and children learning about each other’s countries and ways of life. This is a very exciting project for us all. JIRS has also invited us to send children to their school next year, which is something I am very keen to do. JIRS is a beautiful and safe environment and our children would have a wonderful time learning at the school and re-connecting with the JIRS children who visited us at the beginning of this year. On Monday, 13 th October, twelve of our children, Hiromi, Cheryl and I, will be travelling to Japan with eight children from Warranwood Primary School and their Principal, Steve Albon and their Japanese teacher, Tania. The children will be staying for four night’s home-stay with families from Lillyvale School near Tokyo. This will be a really exciting time for the children finding out about the Japanese culture and using their Japanese language skills. They will be communicating with their home-stay families prior to travelling to Japan and they will know lots about each other. We will then be touring around Tokyo and surrounds and flying back to Melbourne on Saturday, 25 th October. We do look forward to hearing all about their adventures, which they will be sharing with all grades in the school.

These links with our sister schools are very important for our students and community. However, these links are also increasingly important given Australia’s economic and political ties with Asia. Our students really do need to know how to work with other communities in Asian countries and understand cultural differences and similarities, and we are extremely fortunate to have our wonderful links with JIRS in India and Japan.

GOODBYE MAYUMI

It has been lovely having Mayumi at the school over the last two weeks while Hiromi has been away. Mayumi is a leading teacher in her school in Japan and while she was here she taught all grade levels in the school, joining Greg Brown on a Monday with the Level 4 children. Mayumi had lots of stories for the children about life in Japan and also some videos that she had taken to show us. Mayumi quickly became attached to all of us at Kalinda with her gentle style and great experience as a teacher. She thoroughly enjoyed her visit with us and will be visiting us when we are in Japan in October. A great big thank you to the Ma Family for hosting Mayumi. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

Kalinda Chocolate Drive If you nominated to help this year with fundraising, you should have already received your box of chocolates to sell. These boxes contain a variety of chocolates that are $1 each and there are 50 in a box. It also contains an envelope to store all the cash in. For every box that is sold, you will receive a ticket for a prize. Money is due back by Friday 15

th August.

**Please note that unsold chocolates cannot be returned to the school. We would ask that, if your children wish to sell chocolates to friends and neighbours, please make sure they do so with adult supervision.

PREP EXCURSION TO THE ZOO

Prep Melbourne Zoo – Healthy Habitats Excursion The sun shone for us on Tuesday, and whilst it was cold, it didn't deter the enthusiasm of the Prep students as they explored animal habitats at the Zoo. Here are some of their thoughts: "Yesterday we went to the zoo! I liked it when a butterfly landed on me. I liked it when we went to see the otters. I sat next to Nathan on the bus." By Alexandra. Prep D "Yesterday we went to the zoo! I saw some spiders and a butterfly. On the bus I sat next to Hamish. I told three jokes. I saw the reptiles and some fish too. I love the zoo." by James B. Prep D "Yesterday we went to the zoo! I got tired legs. I saw some elephants. I sat next to Alexandra and Nic. I went on the bus." by Nathan. Prep D "Yesterday we went to the zoo! It was fun and we got to see a giraffe and a gorilla." by Alishea. Prep D "Yesterday we went to the zoo! We met the elephants. I love the zoo! I wish we could go to the zoo again." by James M. Prep D" "Yesterday we went to the zoo! I went past an emu. I went on the bus. I sat next to Oliver and Eleanor. I liked the orangutan because he showed his bottom!" by Heidi. Prep D I can see the bear. The bear is brown and white. It is soft. I like the alligators. The alligators! I like orangutans. They are funny. By Tyler Edge I went to the zoo. I just loved the turtle because their shell was scaly and their skin was soft, and their skin was scaly as well. By Lucy Garnett I went to the zoo. I like the butterflies. It was hot in the butterfly house. I liked the frog because it was slimy. I like the seal because it showed off. It was very funny. By Ruby Hamilton After lunch we walked around and we saw a peacock. The tail was open. It was very beautiful! Millie P. Oh my gosh! Lemurs are cute and cuddly because of their tails. Lemurs live in nests. Lemurs have really big nests and they run fast and jump high. Lacey The peacocks have very pretty feathers. The colours are blue and green and purple and brown. When the peacock opened its feathers it looked beautiful and nice. The feathers are beautiful. When we went to the peacocks I was scared because of the eyes on the feathers. April

At the zoo we touched a frog and a snake. I love the snake. I love the frog. Lachlan I like the butterflies because one butterfly was on my piggy tail and it was very hot where we were. Mrs. Thomas took photos of me. Eleanor At the zoo I saw gorillas. I will tell you about the gorillas. There were men who were putting leaves on the ground (for them to eat). Seth I love the otters. They are cute. They swim in the water. They can go on the grass. William A big, warm thank you to those parents who kindly gave up their day to join us!

Kalinda Primary School wants your children to be safe! That’s why we’re

committed to the eSmart program, which is a whole-school system for cyber-safety and wellbeing. ‘An eSmart school is a school where the smart, safe and responsible use of information and communications technology is a cultural norm. Students, teachers and the wider school community are equipped to embrace the best these technologies can offer, while being savvy about the pitfalls. Students are regularly involved in developing and delivering information on the smart, safe and responsible use of technologies to a variety of audiences and are taught a suite of social and emotional skills. In eSmart schools, relationships are strong and

supportive and learning outcomes are enhanced. Bullying and cyberbullying are therefore less likely to thrive.’

Currently, Kalinda’s eSmart committee meets regularly and is always looking for suggestions, feedback or the advice from the school community. After all, we’re all in this together. If you feel like you would like to be involved or have any queries about the eSmart Framework please feel free to contact the committee via the office.

This information and much more about the eSmart Schools Framework can be accessed at: https://www.esmartschools.org.au eSmart Committee

DISTRICT ATHLETICS TEAM AND INFORMATION: Kalinda’s District Athletics team is nearly finalised. We had a

number of students who finished strongly across a number of track and field disciplines and they are making their

choices about the two individual and one team event that they wish to participate in. Obviously, their decisions have

a knock-on effect to other events – in a good way as their decisions often open up opportunities for other students -

but the jigsaw is just about complete!

When the jigsaw IS complete, information and permission forms relating to Kalinda's District Athletics campaign will

be sent home. I am hopeful that this may even occur this week. For the time-being, pencil into your diaries:

Tuesday 2nd September at Bill Sewart Athletics Track.

KALINDA BOYS / MIXED NETBALL SSV DIVISION FINAL (Friday August 15): Kalinda’s ‘Winterschool Sport’

(Boys) netball team will tomorrow play against the Boys/Mixed team of Ringwood Heights P.S. to decide the

Maroondah Division premiers. Game play will be from 1:30pm(ish) until 2:30pm(ish) at Kalinda Stadium. Good Luck

SENIOR HOOP-TIME (Wednesday, August 13): Well done to all 52 students who represented Kalinda Primary

School at yesterday’s Hoop-time event held at ‘The Rings’ (formerly Maroondah Indoor Sports Stadium). In a day

featuring some ‘powerhouse’ basketball schools, our teams were extremely competitive with one – our Mixed

Future Stars #2 team winning every match and earning the right to progress to the next round of competition. A

huge thanks as always to the parent helpers who attended on the day – we literally couldn’t do it without you!

OSHClub News Before School / After School Care Program Term 3 – Week 5 – 11th – 15th August

Program Update

Hello Everyone, Our goal for this week at before and after school care is Teamwork and Communication. The children have been acquiring life skills through playing sports and games such as hand ball, gang up tiggy, four corners, catching games, balloon games, board games, football and basketball. Children also got involved in creating little creatures out of modelling clay. Some of the children participated in creating puppets and putting on a puppet show. We also did quite a bit of cooking including cakes, cookies, and ice cream sundaes. Activities that are still to come include: creating a catapult, painting, drawing, relays, and building towers to name a few. We’d like to welcome all the new children and families attending our program. Parents please remind your children that all of their suggestions for the program relevant to environment setting, menu, activities, etc, are taken in via our suggestion box located at the sign in table, though our suggestion tree. See you all in OSHC! Co-ordinator

PARENTS & FRIENDS GENERAL MEETING

Has been postponed until

Monday, 25th August

at 9.30am (after assembly) in the Stadium Foyer

due to the Production Rehearsals.

Please come along and have a coffee and some morning tea whilst listening and contributing to the matters regarding our children’s education in a friendly and casual atmosphere.

“Gossip with Gail” is always very interesting and informative.

EVERYBODY IN THE KALINDA COMMUNITY IS VERY WELCOME!

We look forward to seeing you there.

Relay For Life Relay for Life is an event which started in 1985 when a doctor in USA decided to run around his local oval for 24 hours to raise funds for a local cancer charity. And things have grown from there with events now taking place annually at multiple venues across 20 countries. The idea is to take turns to keep your teams’ baton moving in a relay walk or run with the goal of raising funds for the Cancer Council through sponsorship and donations. So why relay? Many of us know friends or family members who have been diagnosed with cancer. Everyone has their own story. The Relay For Life is a way of showing support, remembering loved ones, celebrating successful treatments and raising funds to assist in research, prevention, education and support services for people undergoing treatment and their families. Our own Mrs Johns is an organizer for the Maroondah Relay For Life and our Team Captain. This year’s event will take place on Saturday November 15th 2014 from 4pm to the following morning at 10am. We would love you to join our team for 1 lap of the oval or for the entire event if your feet allow! It is quite an experience! The event starts with accompaniment of live local bands. There are activities for children and stalls providing refreshment. As darkness sets in there is a candle ceremony and lighting of hope bags which line the oval. In the middle of the night as it quietens down the candles light the track and there is time for reflection.

We would love you to be a part of Team Kalinda! If you are interested please either sign up via the Relay for life website (www.relayforlife.org.au) or talk to myself or Mrs Johns for more information.
