President’s Message Greetings dancers!
I’m sad that July is over. I like July because I think is the most fun month of the summer… my birthday has always been in
July ever since I can remember. And now I’ve joined the ranks of the ½ centenarians. Good by July.
Well, I did say that I’d explain what 10 times more excited meant at a later date so that’s what this newsletter will be
about. During my 6-month leadership course, we had weekly meetings with our leaders and our coaches to go over our
“integrity”.... things like: did we speed that week? Were we on time to work and other meetings? Did we oversleep? Did we
say we would do something and then do it? If we were out of “integrity”, the consequences weren’t very nice.
Our first bit of homework was to memorize 3 poems. I’m terrible at memorization but I worked hard and was able to do
it and I didn’t want to face the consequences if I didn’t get them memorized. At this particular meeting we had to recite each
poem in front of the group. There were about 12 of us in the course so it wasn’t too bad. We each took our turn. Once
done the leaders then wanted us to recite the poems again BUT do them 10 times more excited. We each did our best but it
wasn’t what they were looking for. Over and over we recited, acting a little more excited each time, smiling bigger each time,
using our hand gestures more each time… still not what they were looking for.
Finally, one of the coaches demonstrated for us what 10 times more excited looked like. This was an over 50 year old
man that got up on stage and jumped and flailed like he was a monkey getting stung by a swarm of bees. He yelled and made
strange noises to the point that the poem was unrecognizable. I never saw such a crazy show in all my life. All of us students
were in shock with our mouths hanging open… but this is what they expected us to do.
Three times during that course, we had to go to Chicago and meet with all those in the mid-west that were also taking
the course. There were more than 300 students in that room. We each had to pick 1 poem and recite it in front of all 300+
people… and do it 10 TIMES MORE EXCITED. One poor soul, a young indian man, couldn’t muster up even a smile. They
had him on stage for over an hour trying to get him to show even an inkling of excitement. He was almost in tears because
he couldn’t do it. So you better believe I got up on stage and flailed like a monkey getting stung by a huge swarm of bees in
front of 300+ people and I didn’t even care about the poem!!!! When I came off that stage the adrenaline was pumping so
great that it was the most exhilarating experience I’d ever had.
Now you know what “10 times more excited” is. This month, I encourage you to talk to people about square dancing and
about how much fun it can be. Call those that you haven’t seen in a while and invite them back. Show a little excitement
when you do. When we join in a dance, show excitement. If you choose to be 10 times more excited, I guarantee you’ll have
fun!

Kitchen Klatter
Well, this will be an easy month for the food. There
is not a dance on August 5th, but I hope you will all
go vote instead.
On August 19th it is our Back To School Dance;
please bring school supplies to donate.
We are having school lunches with sandwiches,
chips and cookies, but we aren't choosey and will
take whatever you bring.
Take the time to live. Life is too short – dance naked…Woo Hoo! However, please keep it in your own bedroom.
