What is Duds to Dazzle?A contest where teams of youth are given a textile to repurpose using only the items in their sewing kits and craft closest, and their knowledge and skills learned in the 4-H Clothing and Textiles project.

Putting Together a Team• Identify team members based on interest

and strengths:

-sewing skills

-engineering skills

-design skills

-public speaking skills

-business minded

Skills to Teach/Learn• Identify the tools in the sewing kit and their purpose• Safety Precautions • Basic sewing

– Sewing machine – Hand stitching

• Business savvy: identifying a target audience, learning how to calculate a sale price, etc.

• Learn about fiber characteristics and care

Hands-on Activities Provide opportunities for the team members:•Teamwork (leadership)•Communication (public speaking)•Creativity (virtual and on-site tours)•Sewing (machine and hand)•Craft (jewelry making and non-wearable)work on projects where they have the chance to use all of the tools in their supply kitUse various startup and closet items

Sample Team Practice Schedule

Week 1 – Set individual and team goals

Team Building

ID tools in the kit and know how to use each safely HW – brainstorm possible project ideas

Week 2 – Learn rotary cutter safety and create a quilt topper

Share project ideas HW – pick one project idea and make it to share at the next meeting

Week 3 – Share completed project ideas

Complete Fiber Science Lab lesson and review characteristics and care for

each textile used

Weeks 4 & 5 – Make a variety of 1-hour projects to build skills

Weeks 6 & beyond – Mock Practices. Don’t forget the presentation!

Presentation• Determine ahead of time who will be

responsible for the various parts of the presentation – correlate to scorecard

• Practice presenting at each meeting• Good public speaking techniques: talk

loudly, use pronunciation, establish eye contact, check posture, don’t fidget, etc.

• Utilize the planning worksheet and note cards to develop and give the presentation

Tips for Putting Together a Sewing Kit

• Kits cost about $150, plus the expense of a generic sewing machine

• Large storage container (think ease in transporting)

• Organize items inside the container

• Think outside of the box to obtain items: 4-H service project, donations, sponsors, Extension office, etc.
