Unless you have been living under a rock for the past ten years, you have heard of Du-brovnik, a unique city in a small country in southeastern Europe. It was assumed that Dubrovnik (lat. Ragusa) was founded in the 7th century, when the Latins fled before the invasion of Avars and Slavs to the Laus cliff. Later these Slavs built a village on the southern slopes of mount Srđ and named it Dubrava, which grew through time into what we nowadays know as Dubrovnik. However, this theory was later refuted by archaeo-logical sites dating back to 5th century and findings of Greek coins and pottery which connect the City with the times of ancient Greeks, long before the 7th century.

Dubrovnik owes its growth and development to maritime trade and diplomacy, which made it a small but influential and wealthy city-state. In times of the biggest expansion of the Dubrovnik Republic, during 15th and 16th century, Dubrovnik was the heart of development of Croatian language and literature and was home of many famous poets, playwrights, mathematicians and other scientists who endowed the city with timeless beauty and uniqueness, placing it among world’s most popular destinations.

Such a turbulent history left its priceless wealth of both tangible and intangible heri-tage making this city unique on a global scale. Dubrovnik was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, and it would be impossible to count, let alone describe all the monuments, sacral objects and museums that preserve the soul of the city. But let us mention those that are the most impressive.

Declining of the Dubrovnik Republic coincided with the Big earthquake of 1667 which left the city in ruins and took many victims. The earthquake itself coincided with discovery of America, moving of waterways to the Atlantic, and constant wars with Turks and Venetians. Due to all these factors, the Dubrovnik Republic fell under governance of Napoleon in 1806, it ceased and was annexed to Dalmatia within Austrian-Hungarian Empire in 1815.

The Walls of Dubrovnik, one of the largest fortification monuments in Europe, 1940 metres long, with five fortresses and sixteen towers and bastions is an outstanding example of the development of fortress architecture. The pure simplicity of Stradun, the city’s main street reflects the harmony and rationality that permeates the whole city. Beautiful Rector’s Palace, the former administrative centre of Dubrovnik Republic, which is the home of top musicians and orchestras thanks to excel-lent acoustics of the space, remarkable Gothic-Renaissance Sponza Palace, Orlando’s Column, the Baroque building of the Main Guard, numerous towers and bastions are only part of the inexhaustible beauty of this city. The Baroque Cathedral of the Assumption and unique church of St. Blaise, except their own beauty, hide numerous priceless art works inside. The wealth of many other churches, museums and libraries is evidence of the glorious history of Dubrovnik. These magnificent buildings are often used as stages for the biggest art event in Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Dubrovnik Summer Festival is the most important cultural event in Dubrovnik and one of the most important in Croatia. Every year on 10th of July to 25th of August entire Du-brovnik becomes a stage with many musical, theatrical and dance performances taking place. Artists from around the world in many attractive locations in or near the city, in the unique ambience perform masterpieces of Marin Držić, Ivan Gundulić, William Shakespeare, Moliere, Carlo Goldoni and other Croatian and foreign artists. Among oth-er events, one especially worth mentioning is the Libertas film festival with an excellent program and regular visits of Hollywood stars such as Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Chris Cooper and many others.

As a true top destination, Dubrovnik offers its visitors many culinary delights, with dom-inant simple dishes made with local organic ingredients with plenty of olive oil. Gastro-nomical offer of Dubrovnik restaurants varies, and is tailored to suit a range of visitors, some of them choosing local specialties such as cheese and prosciutto in oil, octopus salad, green pasta or grilled sardines, while others are looking for the freshest shellfish and fish from the depths of the Adriatic. Delicacies such as sushi dishes and specialties of French and Argentinean cuisine have also found their way to the streets of Dubrovnik. These delicacies perfectly match with Plavac Mali, grapes traditionally grown on the sunny slopes of two Pelješac villages, Dingač and Pošip, by which (sub) types of wine were named.
