  • Welcome to Dubai...

Welcome to the launch of the worlds hottest winter music festival! The idea of Dubai Sound City grew from a series of excited conversations while we were in the throes of preparing for its sister event Liverpool Sound City. Less than 12 months later here we are; a full scale live music and industry conference the like of which has never before been attempted in the UAE.

Dubai Sound City 2009, will bring over 70 bands from 10 different countries including names such as Happy Mondays, Super Furry Animals, Alphabeat and Nitin Sawhney. As well as the more established acts, Sound City will also offer a platform for new and emerging artists looking to break into the Middle East and Asian markets.

Delivering a conference in a new market has not been without its difficulties but we hope you agree its been worthwhile. This years conference will feature some of the true heavy weights of the music business including; ATC Management and Polyphonics Brian Message co-manager of Radiohead , ReverbNations Lou Plaia a music industry veteran and Universal Japans Kimitaka Kato, a new breed entrepreneur leading the way in the Japanese music market.

Dubai is a city with hunger and ambition. It is one of the most beautiful and strangest places I have ever visited. Everyone from the local population to the highest government have given us a warm welcome. There has been a real desire to help us make this work and a shared vision of creating an event which will grow from strength to strength, eventually taking its place in the annual music business calendar as a must attend event for music fans, artists and industry professionals.

In common with Liverpool Sound City, we are about delivering the highest quality, innovative and challenging events. Dubai Sound City has been the most challenging to date. However, it also stands to be the most exciting we have ever delivered!

Do business, have fun and enjoy the sun!

Are we spotting a trend in the faddish marketplace of the social media networks? It seems, as the last favourite dies a new one replaces it. Which ones are really the key to connecting with audiences and make the difference between an exploding fan base and sinking into obscurity?

And what about the mobile phone, could this little device be the saviour of the music business or just a false messiah? In Japan and India mobile downloads dwarf the sales of digital downloads, can these models be replicated elsewhere? This panel discusses who the real winners and losers are in the mobile and digital space.

Now that labels are slashing their budgets and deals for artists are getting scarcer, artists must look to many weird and wonderful ways to raise finance. And what about the labels themselves, are venture capitalists or banks the way to go? Or should we throw out the rule book all together and look at alternative ways to raise hard cash? This panel brings together those who hold the purse strings and those who have had to push the boundaries of creativity to bring home the money.

In a time when live music becomes ever more popular there couldnt be a better time to go on the road. We all know how the artist fits into this and we have a good idea of the risks the promoter takes, but just what is it the agent actually does? Are they a Godsend or just misunderstood? Do they provide protection for artists from Machiavellian promoters? Are they a necessary evil for artists looking to establish international links? How can artists and mangers book their own tours without the help of an agent? This panel takes a look into the murky world of the agent; debate these questions and more.

How many times do we have to say it before the majors begin to understand it? Once we accept it maybe we can move on and make some of sense for the future? Should we accept it? Can we turn it around and make the consumer see the value in purchasing music once more? This panel of experts, cynics and consumers will try and make some sense of it all.

    1515-1600KeynoteFeaturing:Brian Message ATC Management

Moderated by: David J. Pichilingi Festival Director, Sound City

Music companies Mama Group, Nettwerk and ATC have created a new artist investment business. The people behind acts such as Kaiser Chiefs, The Cribbs, Franz Ferdinand, Sarah McLachlan, Faithless, Kate Nash and Radiohead have established the company, Polyphonic, to invest directly into artists, offering an alternative to the label-driven model of the traditional music industry.

All copyrights remain the property of the artist, with Polyphonic taking a share of all profits generated, in much the same way that managers traditionally do.

Brian Message, Chairman of the UK Music Managers Forum and a co-manager of Radiohead, talks to Dave Pichilingi about ATC, his journey with Radiohead and the inspiration behind groundbreaking initiative Polyphonic.

    WORK IN MUSIC?GET CMU.SIMPLE.

Without doubt the most informative piece of music communication I receive

Takes the pomp out of the industry I like that

You feel the people writing it care about music as well as the music industry

Its the only music news disseminator I trust

It doesnt try to be hip or score points it is inclusive
