FNAT 101 (Exploring Indigenous Identities) and FNAT 102 (Exploring Indigenous Communities), which form the first year core of VIU's First Nations Studies program. Arts One is an introductory program which explores the history of First Nations people and their interaction with Western cultures. Indigenous Learning and Recognition Portfolio

Provides an opportunity for students to assess their prior learning experiences through the development of a

personalized portfolio. This intensive reflective process is designed to help students begin to record their past

experiential learning, thus validating knowledge and skills that come from family, community and cultural

backgrounds. ILRP 100 was formerly called EDUC 103; credit will not be granted for both courses. (3:0:4)

Addiction Studies Certificate Program

Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Program Location: Nanaimo This certificate gives students the opportunity to take a collection of courses by their own design that specialize in the area of addictions. Students must satisfy the Degree English Requirement, and complete required courses in psychology and one required second year methods course. A senior course in theories of addiction is also required but offered across a number of departments. The remaining courses can be chosen from a variety of disciplines that deal either directly or indirectly addictions.

Applied Business Technology Certificate: Administrative Assistant Specialty (Cowichan) Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology Program Length: 10 months Program Location: Cowichan, Nanaimo This program provides thorough, in-depth training in the skills required by today’s office workers in order to be competitive in the job market. Legal Studies Certificate (Cowichan) Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Program Location: Cowichan, Nanaimo This Certificate will appeal to individuals who are interested in careers where there are significant legal issues or students wishing to continue onto law school or graduate work in law and policy. This credential is designed primarily for students to take concurrently with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Business Administration degree program and, therefore students will have the opportunity to take a collection of courses by their own design that specialize in the area of legal studies. For example, students majoring in Political Studies could benefit by supplementing their major with the Legal Studies Certificate if they wanted to enter into policy, administrative, government, or a career in law. Credits applied toward the Certificate may be applied toward major program or minor program requirements, or toward a bachelor’s degree under the normal regulations governing those programs. Students must satisfy the University Degree English Requirement and complete 30 credits in 4 areas: Foundations of the Canadian Legal System (6 credits), Primary Source Analysis, Reasoning, and Verbal/Written Argumentation (6 credits), Law (6 credits) and Legal Policy (12 credits). Courses have been selected from several departments, however, there are no guaranteed seats for students registered for this credential. Each department has its own rules for reserved seating and cross-department enrolment policies. Faculty of Trades and Applied Technology Program Length: 9 months Program Location: Nanaimo This certificate program is suited to individuals with all levels of mechanical experience and prepares students for careers as inboard/outboard marine technicians or motorcycle/outdoor power equipment technicians. TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM PREREQUISITES

This sheet outlines acceptable VIU courses that will satisfy BC Teacher Regulation Branch (TRB) requirements for academic preparation for teaching at the ELEMENTARY level. Detailed transcript, specific course approvals and/or credential review are available via an appointment with a Faculty of Education Advisor. Please contact the office via the details above.

INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM SPECIFIC NOTES Year 1 Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Applicants: Applicants applying upon completion of secondary/high school diploma are encouraged to complete the requirements listed below during the first two years of study in the program.

ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION REQUIREMENT 6 credit/semester hours or equivalent of undergraduate English course work with a minimum of 3 credit/semester

hours in literature. 6 credit/semester hours in literature is acceptable, 6 credit/semester hours in compositions is not

acceptable. At VIU, some Interdisciplinary Studies (INTR) and Liberal Studies (LBST) courses are also accepted, or any two

of the following courses:

ENGL 115 University Writing and Research ENGL 125 Literature and Culture ENGL 135 Literature and Criticism

MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENT 3 credit/semester hours or equivalent of undergraduate Mathematics course work. Generally courses characterized by the “MATH” prefix will be accepted. Statistics taught by the Math Department may be used, however, the goal is for the course content to support BC Elementary Mathematics curriculum and not research in other disciplines, etc. Sample suggested courses at VIU that meet this requirement are:

SCIENCE REQUIREMENT 3 credit/semester hours or equivalent of undergraduate Science. The course focus must be on understanding the Canadian experience and central to the conceptual thesis of the course, rather than existing only in exemplar supporting contents of another academic displace.
