Undergraduate Students Present Posters at Annual Work Placement Symposium
By Dr. David O’Brien
More than 60 DIT, School of Physics & Clinical & Optometric Sciences, undergraduate students showcased their Work Placement endeavours and experiences at the 2017 School Symposium on 28th September in the Gleeson Hall, Kevin Street, DIT. During their six month placement, students worked in locations that included hospitals, research institutions, medical device and manufacturing companies - in Ireland, UK, France, Germany, Belgium and the USA.
Students presented their posters, which offer a visual representation of their work/research through text, charts and graphs.. The event provides students with the opportunity to be evaluated and to share their work with peers, faculty and external audiences.
The posters illustrate the diverse specialties encountered by our students such as materials science, nanoscience, medical physics, astronomy, spectroscopy, microscopy, circuit design, quality control, and the four specialist clinical measurement disciplines – Respiratory, Vascular, Neurophysiology and Cardiology.
In addition to real world technical, scientific and clinical experience the work placement provides an excellent opportunity for our students to develop the prerequisite professional and personal work skills required in full time employment; punctuality, time management, team work, adaptability, creativity and much more – these skills will enhance our students’ future careers.

The School of Physics & Clinical & Optometric Sciences, is indebted to Dr. Sheila Gilheany in the Institute of Physics and to Paul Maguire in DIT Hothouse for their financial support in staging this symposium. The awards for the Best Posters were decided by a judging panel comprising Dr David O’Brien, Dr. Aaron MacRaighne, Catherine Grogan, Maria McNeill, Dr Siobhan Daly and the clinical measurement tutors; Karen Cunningham, Aisling McGowan, Tina Hilliard, and Maresa McGee). School faculty were greatly assisted by our post-graduate MSc and PhD research students in deciding the best poster. The head of School, Professor John Doran, announced the awards for best posters which were presented by Dr. Sheila Gilheany, Dr. David O’Brien and Maria McNeill. Best Poster in our four Physics programmes; The prize for the overall Best Poster in our four Physics programmes DT221, DT222, DT227 and DT235 was awarded to Eric Doyle. Awards were made for Best Posters in the following programmes;
• Physics with Energy & Environment DT221 – winner Roby Manaligod • Physics Technology DT222 - winner Samuel Kenny • Science with Nanotechnology DT227 - winner Eric Doyle • Physics with Medical Physics and Bioengineering DT235 - winner Annabelle Nwaokorie
Best Poster in our Clinical Measurement programme DT229; The prize for the overall Best Poster in our Clinical Measurement programme DT229 was awarded to Andrea Gorsa Awards were made for Best Posters in the following clinical measurement disciplines;
• Respiratory - winner Andrea Gorsa • Vascular - winner Luke White • Neurophysiology – winner Bronagh Sheridan • Cardiology – winner Kate Walsh
