DUNELAND TODAY SUMMER 20144

Duneland TODAY Magazine (DTM): In your opinion, what constitutes a healthy community? Is it the sum of our individual citizens’ health, or something greater? Steve Lunn, CEO of Porter Health Care System: Definitely

something greater. I believe a healthy community helps its citizens continuously improve their quality of life. As a quality driven, patient-centered health care organization, Porter Health Care System assists with that through proactive education, health screenings and top-notch healthcare services. Janice Ryba, CEO of St. Mary Medical Center: In my opinion, a healthy community is one that provides the resources, expertise and opportunities for individuals and families to build and maintain healthy lifestyles, or to

achieve their optimal health. As health care providers, we value the community’s health and we need to lead by example by helping to build a culture of healthy living and responsibility through education and partnerships within the communities we serve. DTM: How important is the health of a community in terms of attracting sustainable economic development? Jim Callaghan, President of Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City: Communities face a very competitive environment in trying to attract new businesses. Through being a vibrant and healthy place to live, a community can set itself apart from competing cities and towns. A healthy community also draws more permanent residents. This has a multiplier effect in that it leads to new home construction and increased population, which then attracts retail and other businesses.

Page 5: Dt sum2014 web

5DUNELAND TODAY SUMMER 2014

Thor Thordarson, CEO of IU Health LaPorte Hospital: Health care is one of the top business costs, so it makes sense that employers will look for communities that focus on fostering healthy and vibrant lifestyles. The United Health Foundation ranked Indiana 41 out of 50 in health. We have work to do if we want to be a leading economic development destination. The good news is that this is doable. It’s within our grasp, and Indiana University Health La Porte and Starke Hospitals are committed to making that happen in part by fostering new partnerships – even with our competition. DTM: What tools does your organization offer to build the health of Duneland residents? Steve: Porter Health Care System provides easy access to a broad spectrum of essential health care services that help build or maintain individual health such as primary care, surgery, laboratory services, urgent care, emergency care and advanced technology like MRI and low-dose CTs. We also provide access to a host of free screenings and assessments including HeartAWARE, diabetes risk

assessments, Legs for Life and monthly educational wellness talks. Jim: Franciscan St. Anthony Health offers a variety of free screenings in the communities we serve, along with many seminars and educational events. It is our goal to empower our patients, so they can take an active role in their healthcare. We also offer MyChart, an electronic health record, in all Franciscan Physician Network offices. MyChart gives our patients 24/7 access to their health records, so they can make appointments, print out a child’s shot record and make refill requests---even from their mobile device. We offer an online wellness portal, and our Omni Chesterton Health & Fitness Center offers personalized fitness coaching. Thor: We believe that building healthy communities starts with our own colleagues, so we are working hard to set the example. IU Health La Porte and Starke hospitals have the most innovative Wellness Outreach Program in the area and La Porte is a Gold Level Recipient of the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksites Recognition program for the second year in a row. Colleagues here are financially incentivized to partake in healthy lifestyles through this program.

Janice: In addition to a variety of traditional community outreach activities – free screenings, health fairs, educational symposiums and physician presentations – St. Mary Medical Center has a Quality Care Navigator program for every patient admitted to our hospital. The nurse navigators not only coordinate care across multiple specialties while patients are at the hospital, they also coordinate appropriate post-discharge care with patients and families. And navigators continue to serve as a primary contact for patients’ questions, concerns, or issues regarding their care. DTM: Where do you see healthcare headed in the future, and what is your organization doing to prepare for the changes that may occur? Steve: Healthcare will continue to become more regulated and is shifting to become more centered on the overall health of each individual. Rather than treating one illness or injury, we need to focus on helping patients to be more involved or engaged in their care. At Porter Health Care System, we are trying to educate all community members to take

Page 6: Dt sum2014 web

DUNELAND TODAY SUMMER 20146

the first step and find a physician they can talk to – we call it establishing a medical home to ensure they get the “must-have” medical tests and exams that may save and lengthen their life. Jim: The number one driver has always been quality. The challenge today is to offer the highest quality while keeping an eye on consistent processes and efficiency in order to make care more affordable. We are clearly shifting from a focus on “sick care” to overall health, wellness, and prevention. Thor: Our strategic priorities lie in creating a lean, efficient organization focused on quality and safety, service, people, education and research, and finance and growth. On a greater scale, we see a shift from inpatient care to outpatient services, and a clear drive to manage health better on the front end. Our tools are designed to help our communities live younger, longer by taking control of our health in order to avoid catastrophic illness whenever possible in the future.

Janice: As we move toward the overall management of the community’s health to improve patient outcomes, our organization continues to partner with other local healthcare providers to create a network of high-quality outpatient and inpatient “integrated” services. Sharing appropriate patient information to reduce duplication (and costs) and create the most appropriate care plan for each patient we serve.

DTM: What opportunities do you see for the Duneland community to become a healthier place to live, work and play? Steve: Increasing health and wellness awareness throughout the community needs to be a top priority. From health awareness campaigns to hosting more events and even contests or challenges that bring attention to special health-related issues, there are many opportunities to touch the community. Through this type of education, each Duneland community member can learn to be his or her own health advocate and use the tools available to empower their best health. Jim: To make a community healthy is a community-wide task. It starts with people being accountable for their own health, but takes commitment from the community leaders and the business community to support the individuals in their efforts. Franciscan Alliance has been a partner in the Duneland Communities for 20+ years, and will continue to work to enhance the communities’ health needs. We provide primary care, specialists, emergency care as well as exercise and wellness through Omni. We are a long term sponsor of Rebuilding Together-Duneland – an initiative that assists elderly and low income residents live safely and securely.

Thor: We encourage citizens of all ages to participate in the free or low-cost programs offered by IU Health, and to approach health from a preventive standpoint by scheduling regular exams. If you need a doctor, visit us online to find a physician who matches your health needs. On the events page you can also find a list of all our

public health events and screenings. One of the best events that combines health and fun is the La Porte Hospital Foundation’s Tour de La Porte, August 22-24. It’s a perfect family-friendly event but also draws serious athletes who want to compete in running and biking. All proceeds go toward local cancer care. Janice: The Duneland community is fortunate to enjoy a great number of activities and businesses that contribute to a good quality of life for your residents. Our physicians and staff are engaged in the community supporting health screenings and education programs to promote healthy lifestyles. I envision additional opportunities for partnerships between various industries. We want to make sure there is easy access to health care services and are committed to creating new and innovative plans to sustain the Duneland community as a healthy place to live, work and play!

With a Little Help from Our Cleanse

Mindful Nourishment For a Healthy Body & Soul

NNow, what the Mindful Nourishment Guided

Cleanse experience is: For 14 days, you’ll eat

whenever you’re hungry, and you’ll eat until you’re

full. Now, that’s not to say there aren’t rules. There

are. They’re just rules grounded in how human

bodies actually process food into energy – an

approach that worked very, very well for several millennia

before modern food processing came along.

With a background in computer information

systems, Mindful Nourishment owner Allyson Straka

takes a systems approach to getting healthy. Go to

the source of the problem, work outwards to

determine solutions, and make the entire healing

process sustainable – which, when it comes to food,

means making it enjoyable. “This isn’t some

starvation, liquid cleanse,” said Allyson Straka,

owner of Mindful Nourishment, Chesterton’s new

health coach practice. “My cleanse is all about real,

whole foods.”

Real, whole foods, it turns out, are the kind that get

planted in (or raised upon) the ground, harvested, and delivered to the grocery store without getting

infused with additives, chemicals, or other toxins.

During her 14 Day Guided Cleanse, Allyson promises

that “you will be eating REAL, non-processed, whole

foods for every meal that will detox your body from

the harmful chemicals contained in most

processed foods.”

So, here’s how it works: You sign up for one of

Allyson’s quarterly cleanses, and join a group of no

more than 29 other students who’ve committed to

detoxing their systems for the full 14 day program.

You’ll be assigned a personal coach who will help

you fi ll out a health assessment form, after which she’ll design a menu customized to address your

specifi c health concerns. “This personal attention

is what sets us apart from other cleanses,” Allyson

explained. “We don’t just give you a sheet of

directions and turn you loose. We work with you

throughout the 14 days and make sure that you

understand the detox process.”

Once registered, you’ll be given over 100 cleanse-

friendly recipes curated by Allyson and jazzed up (i.e., made delicious) by the chef at Bartlett’s

Gourmet Grill & Tavern. You’ll be sent to Nature’s

Cupboard, Molly Bea’s Ingredients, and Good to Go

by Lucrezia to buy ingredients, and then you’ll be

taught exactly how to transform whole, real foods

into nutritious, appealing, fi lling meals.

You’ll also be given access to a private Facebook

group through which to connect with others who

are going through – or who have been through –

Allyson’s cleanse. As you relearn the basics of how

to nourish your body, you’ll enjoy a peer group who

snaps photos in the grocery store and posts the

results to ask each other if foods are “cleanse-

friendly.” You’ll take heart in knowing you are far

from alone in discovering how alarmingly naïve you

are about how to shop for and prepare real food.

[Side note: You can also sign up for an individual

cleanse, which focuses on one-on-one interaction with your coach, instead of a balance between

Let’s start with what Mindful Nourishment’s Guided Cleanse is not. It’s not a liquid diet. It’s not a crash diet. It’s not intended to starve you into submission or ply you with pills, powders, meal replacement bars, or those just-add-water packets that resemble something from basic training or a scary backwoods survival kit. It’s not a directive to count calories or carbs or colors or any other arbitrary delineation we’ve managed to carve our diets into. The cleanse will not make you dependent on freight packages of sustenance delivered to your home or offi ce every 30-60 days like a United Nations rations drop. And, most importantly, the cleanse will not force you to start eyeing your shoelaces as tastier alternatives to the so-called “meals” you’re being asked to consume.

individual attention and group camaraderie. For the

record, Allyson recommends the group approach.

Decades of research show that you’ll be twice as likely

to succeed – and enjoy twice the results – as the solo

track. Why? At the beginning of the cleanse, misery

loves company, and at the end, awareness thrives

within community.]

So, about the misery. Four days into the cleanse,

you’re going to feel rotten, even though you’re probably

eating healthier than you’ve eaten in your entire life.

Toxins that have been building up in your cells for

years are now leaving your body in a flood, resulting in a “health crisis” as your body moves through illness

towards a state of wellness. In other words, things

get worse before they get better. The value of group

participation will become obvious during this period’s

cleanse class meeting, as you commiserate with others

who’re sharing your journey to back to health.

But then, after the meeting, something happens. You

start to feel better. And then you start to feel great.

Like, really great. Your skin becomes clearer, you have

more energy…and yes, it’s not wishful thinking -

inches start to melt away. Your mood improves

dramatically. “The last group meeting of the cleanse

is always the same,” said Allyson. “Everyone is

beaming and happy. It never fails.”

The price tag to take part in the Mindful Nourishment

Guided Cleanse: $99. Not bad for lost weight and

gained knowledge about how to feed yourself and

your family in a way that will optimize your physical

and emotional health every day for the rest of your

life. The registration deadline for Allyson’s next

cleanse is August 6. Need a recommendation to be

sure it’s right for you? You don’t have to look far. Half

of Duneland is already buzzing about this cleanse.

And the other half should be.

It’s not every day a former dancer with the

American Ballet Theater opens up shop in your

small town. But then Orlee Glazer, owner of

M.O.M.s Method: Mind Over Matter Studio, isn’t

just any former ballerina. Yes, she began dancing at

the tender age of 5, went on to study at the

prestigious Maryland Youth Ballet and then the

School of American Ballet in New York City, and

took part in the world-famous Chautauqua Dance

Festival. And yes, in some ways you’d swear she was

still that version of herself - aggressively focused on

competitive, professional ballet. She’s petite, but

strong. Fiercely strong, even. Yet after just a few

minutes of conversation, you see that there’s more

than just the strength. There’s also deep joy and a

profound love for her fellow women underpinning

her every word and movement. You understand the

buzz, now. With Orlee and her new barre studio,

something phenomenal has come to Duneland.

“Learn to love the burn. Be strong. Be positive. Be happy. Be you.”

These words on the wall of M.O.M.s Method: Mind Over Matter

Studio are Orlee’s mantra to herself, as well as to her two young daughters and her students. “Women take care of everyone but

themselves,” Orlee explained. “We look out for our mothers,

husbands, friends, and children, often at the expense of our own

well-being. But it’s okay to tell your children – and everyone else

- that you’re going to take time to exercise. Far from making you a

bad mother, it sets a positive example that you want to take care of yourself – that you want to be strong and have energy to move

through your life with focus and passion. Strong is the new skinny.

Strong is the new beautiful.”

Orlee’s new barre studio is the only one of its kind in Northwest

Indiana, and it shows. Typically, people will drive no more than 10

minutes to work out, yet several of Orlee’s students are traveling

30 minutes or more on a regular basis to enjoy her unique barre

Aida Lugo McAllister was born in Gary, Indiana to Puerto Rican parents. At the age of 12, she cooked and served dinner every day at her parents’ home. After high school graduation, Aida moved to Puerto Rico.

Aida worked for one year as a secretary for

attended school full time at the University of Puerto Rico. During the school breaks between semesters, she traveled the entire Island and the neighboring Caribbean

Puerto Rican dishes while living in Puerto Rico. When she graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education,

with a concentration in Business Education at Indiana University.

Aida devoted her free time learning how to

classes with instructors who were chefs

about the different cultures and cuisines.

Aida changed her career path and obtained another Bachelor’s Degree, this time in Accounting, at Indiana University. Once she completed her studies, she decided to write a cookbook because she was frequently either showing and/or explaining to her friends how to cook Puerto Rican food. In addition, Aida also wanted to create this cookbook as a legacy to the new generations interested in the Latin American cuisine.

Currently Aida lives in Indiana with her Irish husband, Henry, who enjoys and appreciates all of her cooking - especially Puerto Rican dishes.

Viajó a

Serving as ambassadors for the offerings of our local community is admirable. But tripling the attraction

vector for a workout studio is a paradigm shift. So,

we have to ask ourselves: What is the M.O.M.s Method

workout, and why is it causing such a stir in

Northwest Indiana?

“You won’t experience anything else like the barre

workout,” said Rachel, Orlee’s marketing director.

is used to isolate and strengthen muscles), any age group can benefi t. Our students

range from 25 – 65.”

In addition to being non-impact, M.O.M.s approach to stretching and strengthening

the body is different in that it is specifi cally targeted to the vagaries of women’s

bodies as they age. “Our methods help protect bone health and even reverse age-

related muscle loss that may begin in your 30’s,” Orlee explained. “In addition,

we use the “barre tuck” - a signature move for strengthening the pelvic fl oor and lower abdominals, a key component to positive female health. We use a full range

of modifi cations to accommodate any fi tness level, injury recovery needs, and

stage of life. We want women to become the strongest version of themselves, no

matter their starting points.”

Orlee is not only passionate about leading the way towards physical strength.

She’s equally committed to removing barriers that could prevent her students

from coming to class. Enter the M.O.M.s Method childcare program: Affordable,

staffed, on-site childcare within in an engaging, brightly colored, activity-fi lled

playroom just one step away from the main workout space “I trust our sitters with

my own daughters while I lead class,” said Orlee. “And we limit the number of kids

to 10, so each child can be taken care of and receive plenty of attention and oversight.”

When asked about why she chose to open her studio in Chesterton, Orlee related

the following: “I’ve been inspired by the women in this community. During our

“Sculpt for Spring Challenge,” women made real sacrifi ces to be here working

out. And they lost inches and felt great after just 30 days. There was a real feeling

of community. One woman had never been able to commit to working out, and

she ended up coming to class every day. We had a very hard winter, but everyone in the studio was having so much fun together. I couldn’t do this without the

women in my team – especially Rachel – and the women in my classes. All together,

we make an amazing team!”

to feed you, inspire you, and connect you with

Anyone who’s visited Apryl’s booth at

Some people are stingy with their wisdom. They wrap themselves around it, hoarding it like treasure. Other, more generous teachers share it, but only cryptically, in measured rations. Every now and then, however, an industrious soul appears who actively builds a bounty of opportunities to share down-to-earth, practical knowledge with anyone and everyone who wants to receive the lessons. Apryl Niksch, founder-owner of Harvest Circle Workshop, has demonstrated she has this best, rarest kind of wisdom - the generosity to help people discover their own aptitude for self-actualization.

“Teens will strive to meet our expectations. Parents

and communities often have low expectations for

them, and don’t encourage them to reach their full

potential.” – Donna L. Golob, Executive Director,

A Positive Approach to Teen Health.

20 years ago this past November, three female health

teachers desired to fi ll a hole in their health curriculum.

Even then, teens were having sex, and struggling to

weigh the outcomes of their behaviors. But the teachers

had a hunch that instead of pretending the “sex

problem” didn’t exist, they should start giving their

students current, relevant data about what could

happen if they didn’t start making better choices. They

fi gured that being young shouldn’t exclude – or excuse

– a person from rational decision making.

It turns out they were right. Now, thanks to Wilma

Willard, Pat Rhinehart, and Sue Martz – the founders

of A Positive Approach to Teen Health (PATH) –

Northwest Indiana has a proven model for helping

our youth learn to make good decisions about all of

the issues that matter most for them…not just sex.

“For a long time, PATH was an abstinence organization,”

explained Donna L. Golob, PATH’s Executive Director.

“But we’ve discovered that there’s a lot more to what’s

causing teens to act out, and even to make the decision

to engage in risky sexual behavior. Our kids are having

sex as a way of coping, as a way out, or due to substance

abuse or bullying. No matter what, all of the reasons

are connected, and we felt that we needed to expand

to be able to address more than just the fact that our kids are having sex at alarmingly young ages. We take

a holistic approach to communicating with our

students about a host of issues that they face.”

It takes a village to communicate with a child effectively

– or, if a village isn’t handy, a carefully vetted,

impressively organized, engagingly delivered, and

painstakingly documented social awareness campaign.

“We bring medically accurate and relevant facts about

the real-time issues of relationships, addictions, and

social interactions to thousands of students in seven

counties throughout Northwest Indiana,” said Golob.

“And the word’s gotten out about our effectiveness.

We’ve been asked to present in South Bend later this

year, and we’re constantly getting calls from parents

and administrators, asking us if we can come to their

schools – if we can help.”

Sixth graders are the front line of PATH’s curriculum.

Should kids this age be having sex, abusing drugs and

alcohol, bullying others, being bullied, or suffering

the agony of depression or anxiety? Of course not.

Unfortunately, the righteous ideal of how things should

be often isn’t enough to undo the terrible things that

simply are. “We help these students begin to lay a

foundation,” said Golob. “We help them develop a

sense of self-respect. They need to be taught how to

value themselves – and others – from an early age,

so that they’re able to say “no” when they need to later

on. Their response needs to come from within,

stemming from their understanding of the damage

they can do with one little misplaced “yes.” They

shouldn’t be saying no because someone told them

to, but because they realize that often, the damage

can’t be undone once the decision is made.”

So, beginning in the sixth grade, PATH gets a baseline

on where kids’ heads are with an entrance survey.

Then, for five consecutive days, students are

indoctrinated into the Positive Potential program,

which exposes them to very current, very factual, and

– at times – very disturbing data about what happens

to their bodies (and their lives) when they make

choices that damage their mental, emotional, and

physical health. This is not a scare tactic but rather a

reality check. “There are consequences to decisions

we make, and some of them can last a lifetime.” said Golob. The message is clear: Respect yourself. Respect

others. Set boundaries, and stick to them. You are a

whole person, and every decision you make affects

every other part of who you are.

PATH reinforces its message with annual “booster

assemblies.” Sixth graders experience a “Be the

exception” assembly, while seventh graders learn to

“Push the Limits” and eighth graders learn how to be

“unstoppable.” These fast-paced, multi-media

presentations utilize 46 feet of video screens and are

a far cry from the health class “sex ed” videos most of

us remember. The aggressiveness of the delivery

matches the urgency of the message, as demonstrated

by students’ responses on exit evaluations three

months later….and then three years later.

A HEALTHY CHOICE WHEN IT MATTERS MOST a positive approach to teen health

23DUNELAND TODAY SUMMER 2014

“We’re showing a great deal of success in our exit

surveys,” said Golob. “Due to our funding streams,

we have a very rigorous evaluation system. There are

1,100 students in each of our treatment and control

schools, and the difference between their results at

the end of the program is substantial. Kids are

benefi tting greatly from our program. I wish we could

be everywhere, all the time, and still get the data we

needed to prove our effectiveness. Not serving some

schools with our program, as criteria of our funding source, has been one of the most diffi cult things for us.”

In addition to Positive Potential, PATH manages

Horizon (a similar program for high-risk urban youth),

and Liv.True – a weekly mentorship program for fi fth

graders through high school aged students. “The

Duneland Family YMCA is becoming involved in

LivTrue this fall,” said Golob. “The mentoring group

will meet at Chesterton Middle School for these

students in seventh and eighth grade, but will be a

part of the Y’s programming efforts. Each week,

volunteers will donate 1.5 – 2 hours of their time to

mentor local students. We’re looking forward to

connecting with Duneland youth through this Liv.True site.”

DUNELAND TODAY SUMMER 201424

“What does hope look like? it’s in the rising Walls of a home rebuilt, raising the spirit of a community reborn. What does heart sound like? it’s in the rhythm of nails pounded into Wood, a beat driven by the conviction that inspiration can overcome desperation. What does home feel like? it’s in the faces of americans Who’ve built generations of memories in their homes…and then saW it slipping aWay. until friends they had never met turned out to lend a hand.”

The national campaign video for Rebuilding Together was only one minute, but

it was a fitting one minute. Morgan Freeman’s voice – that voice – delivered the

organization’s mission to the accompaniment of smiling grandmothers hugging volunteer construction workers and exuberant children wrapping themselves

around new playground equipment. The impact, however, lay not in a soulful

Hollywood A-lister and heart-rending images. It resided in the confident knowledge

that such high-octane national philanthropy has a very real, very tangible presence

right here in the Duneland community.

The ability to help Duneland’s residents live in warm, safe environments with

independence and dignity is at the heart of Rebuilding Together Duneland’s (RTD)

efforts. “Home ownership is a point of pride,” explained Jocelyn Hibshman,

President of RTD. “We help people who who’ve fallen on hard times – people who

care about their homes and their possessions, but just aren’t able to keep up with

the basic maintenance that comes along with ownership. Sometimes, people are

being forced to choose between eating, taking care of health care bills, and paying

for home repairs. That’s where we can help, by lifting the repair costs out of the

equation. In doing so, we contribute to making our community a healthier place

to live. You don’t have to be a doctor to save someone’s life. And every time you

help someone else, you help yourself.”

Jocelyn isn’t alone in her belief that helping others boosts personal wellness. This

year, RTD attracted a record number of 450 volunteers between the ages of 14

and 77 to its 18th Annual Work Day on Saturday, April 26. Parents brought their

children to take part in a good cause – and a good resume builder. Businesses sent employees, both because it was the right thing to do, and because they’d

discovered the team-building value of the exercise. Individuals came on their own

– some for the first time, some to keep up a tradition of participation that stretched

back nearly 20 years. “There’s a reason we don’t have trouble getting volunteers,”

said Scott Mundell, RTD Treasurer. “People come back year after year because

it’s so rewarding”

The mechanics of an RTD Work Day are impressive. In the morning, the volunteers

– all 450 of them – meet at Westchester Intermediate School for sign-in, t-shirt

pick-up, breakfast, and a pep talk from RTD leadership. Afterwards, they join

their group’s Ambassador in being transported to their work sites in buses donated

by the Duneland School Corporation and driven by volunteer DSC bus drivers.

Once on-site, Ambassadors introduce volunteers to the homeowners and House

Captains. Questions and concerns are handled by the Ambassadors, while House

Captains hand out job assignments, which they’ve spent the last month developing.

While there are volunteers with specialized construction knowledge (termed

“skilled laborers), there are also plenty who couldn’t rewire a light switch if their

lives depended on it (termed “unskilled laborers”). There is an equal need for

both, as many sites are in need of painting, cleaning, raking, and planting in

addition to the more difficult undertakings of electrical, plumbing or roofing work.

And not all of the volunteers stay on-site all day – though they’re provided a

delicious lunch if they do. “Whatever people can give, we welcome,” said Jocelyn.

“Committing to a 2-3 hour shift in the morning is extremely helpful.”

Rebuilding Together Duneland

Page 25: Dt sum2014 web

25DUNELAND TODAY SUMMER 2014

Sam Allie, RTD Vice President, has been involved with RTD since 2011, first as a

House Captain and then as Logistics Coordinator. “Some of our House Captains

have been with us for 17 years, going to the sites one month before the Work Day, meeting with the homeowners, developing materials lists and making project

plans. I love the fact that we make a direct impact on other human beings right

here in our community. There’s nothing wrong with giving money to a big

corporation and trusting it to use your funds wisely. But it’s different when you

see the people you’re helping at lunch the next week. When I first got involved

with RTD, I saw how it engendered this “pay-it-forward” atmosphere, and I kept

asking to do more.”

Nancy Veselica, Public Relations Chair and nine year RTD volunteer, agreed:

“When I was looking for a way to give back to the community, I chose to volunteer

for Rebuilding Together-Duneland’s work day. One year later, I joined the board

to handle the PR and Advertising. It’s so meaningful to see the smiles from the

homeowners when I visit all of the sites on work day while taking pictures. It’s

really powerful.”

It’s not just the emotional impact that’s powerful. With a 1:4 ROI and a running total of over $1 Million in market-value labor and materials infused into the

Duneland community, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more effective organization

in which to invest your time, talent, or treasure. “This is the most concentrated

volunteer effort in Duneland,” said Jocelyn. “The RTD Work Day has the most

people in one place at one time for one effort.”

Homeowners will be able to apply for inclusion as an RTD 2015 project site

beginning in August via the organization’s website www.rtduneland.com. “We’re

always looking for more projects, and we’d encourage those who know someone

who may be in need of help to apply,” said Jocelyn. “Also, we’re also always looking

for donors and sponsors. We couldn’t be as effective as we are without local

businesses like Hopkin’s Ace Hardware, Chesterton Feed & Garden, and Leroy’s

“Hot Stuff” contributing to the success of our Work Day. As our Duneland population

ages, the need will only become greater. We do more than repair houses and

communities ~ we help rebuild lives.”

Aida Lugo McAllister has written a bilingual Puerto Rican cookbook. This cookbook is written in English and Spanish and consists of 42 authentic Puerto Rican recipes – most of which are prepared to create a much healthier version of Puerto Rican cookery. These classic and contemporary recipes are updated and modifi ed, maintaining the texture and fl avor of the dishes. The author shares personal stories, time-saving ideas and helpful food preparation tips. Each recipe has a picture that depicts exactly how the food is served on a plate in a Puerto Rican home, and some recipes contain step-by-step instructions along with pictures. A special culinary love story is outlined in the introduction section of this cookbook.

HOOSIER MOVER112 Wabash Ave. • Chesterton, IN 46304James Leslie • [email protected]

Local moving company, Hoosier Mover, was started in April of 2011. We started to give people a reasonable choice that they could turn to with their moving needs. We strive to give our customers the highest level of professionalism possible. We have been on the opposite end as customers hundreds of times ourselves, so we know what we do and do not like. Many contracts have all kinds of “extra” charges that add up very easily and quickly, so we have chosen to implement the “KISS” method in our billing, “Keep It Super Simple.” We charge just $30.00 an hour per man, a one-time $35.00 service charge, and the truck costs. Call us for a free estimate.

Through their new organization (B.I.T.A. – Bringing Israel to America), they will be offering weekly and weekend seminars for people who are interested in enhancing their lives through a spiritually focused counseling system.
