Our college and its Alumni Association jointly hosted the 11 th National Dairy Products Judging Contest and the 7 th National Dairy and Food Quiz contest on 6 th and 7 th October, 2014. National Academy of Dairy Science (NADS), India and SMC College of Dairy Science jointly organized national seminar on Functional Dairy Foods at AAU, Anand on 11 th October, 2014. A National seminar on “Indian Dairy Industry-Opportunities and Challenges” coupled with “11 th Alumni Convention” was organized by Alumni Association and SMC College of Dairy Science during 8-9 January, 2015 at AAU, Anand. At the eleventh Alumni convention, about 350 graduates of SMC College were present. It is a matter of pride that many of our young faculty were bestowed with awards and recognitions during the period. Campus interviews for placement were conducted in February and March, 2015 for the B.Tech (DT) final year students and post graduate students who will be passing out in July, 2015. I am glad to inform you that almost all the students have succeeded in finding suitable jobs. I hope you will appreciate the activities conducted by the college and Alumni Association. We welcome your feedback in the next issue in DSCA News Link. Welcome to DSCA Newslink, a twice-yearly magazine about the activities of the SMC College of Dairy Science. The fraternity of SMC College of Dairy Science honoured our beloved Ex-Principal & Dean, Dr. B. P. Shah on the eve of his superannuation from the active services. The college witnessed many activities during the said period. Our college and its Alumni Association jointly hosted the 11th National Dairy Products Judging Contest and the 7th National Dairy and Food Quiz contest on 6th and 7th October, 2014. 11th National Dairy Products Judging contest

SMC College of Dairy Science and its Alumni Association, Anand Agricultural University, Anand jointly hosted the 11thNational Dairy Products Judging contest on 6th October, 2014. Sensory attributes being the foremost parameter for consumer acceptance of any food product, this unique event has gained tremendous momentum since its inception in 2002. A total of 26 teams from dairy industries and academic institutions from all over India participated in the Judging contest.

Three dairy products viz. milk, dahi and ghee were presented for judging. Amongst the participants from industries National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Anand secured first prize while Sumul Dairy, Surat and Dudhsagar Dairy, Mehsana were awarded second and third prizes respectively. Among the academic institutions, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal was awarded the first prize, while MIDFT, Mehsana stood second and College of Dairy Technology, Raipur came third. Mr. Utkal Y. Dave who represented Sumul Dairy, Surat and Ms. Nisha Chaudhary, from MIDFT Mehsana were awarded first prize as individual winners.

Dr. J. B. Prajapati, I/C Principal & Dean and President of Alumni Association, welcomed all the guests at the prize distribution ceremony. Shri. Pankajbhai Shah, Managing Director,

Baroda Dairy, the Guest of honour of the function, highlighted the relevance of events like judging, food labelling and new product development contests in the present scenario where food product are screened by stringent rules and standards. Dr. K. Rathnam, Managing Director, Amul Dairy Anand was the Chief Guest of the function. In his address, he said that such events provide platform for acquiring enormous knowledge and urged the participants to disseminate the knowledge they have gained. He also stressed the importance of judging and expressed his view on central judging facilities for branded products so as to cope up with new laws and market demands. Dr. N. C. Patel, Vice Chancellor, Anand Agricultural University, Anand in his presidential address congratulated the winners and organizers and emphasized the significance of clean milk production and requisite for labelling norms for local products. He also urged to bring in new products developed for acceptability testing by different teams. Dr. H.G. Patel, Secretary, Alumni Association proposed the vote of thanks.

7thNational Dairy and Food Quiz Contest at Milk City, Anand.

The Seventh National Dairy and Food Quiz contest was organized by SMC College of Dairy Science and its Alumni Association, Anand Agricultural University, Anand on 7th October, 2014. The present scenario demands the technocrats to sharpen their technical skills and to appraise with the latest research innovation and techniques. Twenty four teams from various academic institutions of India and different dairy plants from Gujarat took part in the contest. National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal secured first prize, while SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand and Vidya Dairy, Anand were awarded second and third prizes respectively. A consolation prize was awarded to National Dairy Development Board, Anand. At the prize distribution ceremony, Dr J.B. Prajapati, I/C Principal and Dean of the College welcomed all dignitaries and participants. Shri Harshad Joshi, Dy. Director, Maahi Milk Producers Co. Ltd., Rajkot. who was the chief guest of the event advised the students to work hard and upgrade their knowledge for a bright career. He also congratulated the faculty for its excellent academic performance. Dr. K. B. Kathiria, Director of Research and Dean P.G. Studies, AAU, Anand, who was the guest of honour of the function was of the opinion that such contest helps to prepare students for competitive exams.

Dr. N. C. Patel, Vice Chancellor, AAU, Anand in his presidential address indicated that such events help the students to update their knowledge and also stressed on the need to educate the dairy farmers. He conveyed that ‘Involvement in work with dedication in right direction is the secret of success’. Dr. Atanu Jana, organizing secretary proposed vote of thanks.

National Seminar on Functional Dairy Foods

National Academy of Dairy Science (NADS), India and SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand Agricultural University, Anand jointly organized a National Seminar on Functional Dairy Foods at AAU, Anand on 11th October, 2014. About 150 delegates from dairy industry and academic institutions from different parts of the country took part in the seminar. The event was sponsored by Danisco-DuPont, Singapore. The inaugural session was graced by many dignitaries. Dr. B. P. Shah, Principal & Dean SMC College of Dairy Science, in his welcome address highlighted the promising health benefits offered by functional foods. As a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, all the dignitaries and the fellows of the academy were felicitated with a khadi shawl and a bouquet of flowers. Dr. G. R. Patil, Vice president, NADS(I) and Joint Director (Academic) NDRI, Karnal presented the various activities of NADSI and the relevance of the functional foods. Major objectives of the academy are to encourage and promote the pursuit of excellence in the field of dairy science, to promote scientific and technological knowledge in dairying and also to act as a body to promote the work of eminent scientists and technologists of the country. He also added that the demand for functional foods is growing at the rate of 8 to 14% and suggested that traditional wisdom of Ayurveda and modern knowledge of Dairy Technology should be shared to develop new functional foods for the consumers. Dr. K. Rathnam, Managing Director, Amul Dairy Anand, expressed his view on the relevance of functional foods in the present and future market and also remarked that regulations on functional foods and food ingredients as well as health claims should be streamlined. Dr. N. C. Patel, Vice Chancellor, Anand Agricultural University, Anand, Chairman of inaugural function, highlighted on the scientific challenges associated to build an in-depth knowledge about various aspects related to the process of fermentation, functional ingredients, their proper selection, processing technologies, clinical safety of the

newly developed functional foods etc. Dr. A. K. Srivastava, President, NADS (I) and Director & Vice Chancellor, NDRI, Karnal, in his presidential address said that in present scenario our prime motto and concern is to provide food security and nutritional security to all the citizens of our country. Biggest challenge at present is how to feed the growing population with nutritious food. In this context, milk and value added functional foods from milk have a great role to play. He also threw light on various functional dairy foods like liquid milk (calcium fortified, vitamin-D fortified, iron fortified, ω-3 fatty acids), fermented Dairy Products (probiotic yoghurt, lassi),whey based beverages (whey-herbs based beverages, sports drinks), traditional and composite dairy foods (Bajra lassi, milk-millet based foods). Dr. J. B. Prajapati, Organizing Secretary and Head, Dairy Microbiology Department SMC College of Dairy Science, proposed the vote of thanks.

Dr RK Malik, Joint Director (Research), NDRI and Secretary of NADSI chaired the technical session. Dr JB Prajapati, Head of Dairy Microbiology Department from SMC College acted as the co-chairman. The technical session had three eminent speakers from the industry and academic institutions. Dr. A. K. Singh, Senior Scientist, Dairy Technology Department, NDRI, Karnal delivered lecture on technological aspects of composite dairy foods based on milk and plants. Mr. Manivvannan Ambigapathy, Team leader for dairy and frozen desserts from DuPont, Danisco, Delhi talked on Functional ingredients and probiotics. The session witnessed very fruitful discussions from industry and academia side. At the end, Dr BP Shah, Principal & Dean, SMC College of Dairy Science thanked all the delegates for the success of the seminar.

A National seminar on “Indian Dairy Industry-Opportunities and Challenges” coupled with “11th Alumni Convention” was organised by Alumni Association and SMC College of Dairy Science during 8-9 January,2015 at AAU, Anand. In the inaugural function, Dr. B. P. Shah, Principal and Dean SMC College of Dairy Science, welcomed the dignitaries, delegates, professionals and technocrats from dairy industry. He briefed about SMC College, academic, research and

extension activities. The Guest of Honour of the function, Shri Sangram Chaudhary, Executive Director, National Dairy Development Board, Anand gave an epigrammatic scenario of the Dairy Industry. He mentioned that the topic of seminar is very contemporary and relevant as we anticipate that Indian economy would come out of inertia that it experienced during past few years and put the economy into development path that would be sustainable, inclusive and socially desirable. Dr. A. R. Pathak, Vice Chancellor, Junagadh Agricultural University was the Chief Guest of the function and complemented the organisers for the relevance of the topic and remarked on many technologies developed by SMC College of Dairy Science, which have been transferred to industry. He stressed that the value addition needs to be given more importance in agriculture. He then highlighted the importance of academic institutes to work in collaboration with industry. Dr. N. C. Patel, Vice Chancellor, Anand Agricultural University, the President of the function, emphasised the need to take up mechanisation and marketing issues of traditional milk delicacies. He also suggested that decentralisation of dairy industry by establishing local processing facilities would lower the transportation and marketing cost, environmental pollution and yields high returns to milk producers. Dr. A. Jana, Organising secretary proposed the vote of thanks.

Inaugural session of National Seminar...

This national seminar included 4 technical sessions, 12 lead papers were presented by eminent speakers and 5 companies made presentation in Industry forum session. A total of 37 research posters were also presented by young researchers. Dr.HG Patel, SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand talked on “Recent development of indigenous dairy products”, where he highlighted about the demand for traditional dairy products and presented his work on traditional products. Dr JB Prajapati from AAU talked on “Probiotic dairy foods and their future”. He emphasized the need for utilization of indigenous strains and technological innovations to dispense them in various formats. Shri Amit Vyas, General Manager, AMUL Dairy highlighted the importance of energy conservation in dairy industry. Dr. M M Yadav, Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal discussed the issues related to sustainability, challenges to dairy industry, the huge gap existing between demand and supply of milk. Shri Pankaj Shah, Managing Director,

Baroda Dairy in his speech emphasized on the importance of quality management in the dairy industry and specified the importance of TEI, TQC and TWE. Dr. Rajiv K. Shah, a dairy consultant, centered his speech on Functional dairy ingredients and its future scope. In the industry forum session, representatives from Goma Industries, Mumbai; SPX technologies, Denmark;Malabar Regional Dairy Co-operative Federation Ltd, MILMA, Calicut; Mehsana Dist. Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited., Mehsana and Ice Mak, Ahmedabad gave presentations. The last session was chaired by Dr. Baboo Nair, Professor Emeritus, Lund University, Sweden. Shri Hare Ram Singh, Director, Dairy Development, Government of Bihar shared his experience of working in Bihar and narrated the challenges they faced and how that was converted to opportunity. Dr. K. G. Upadhyay, an eminent dairy technologist shared his vast experience spanning 43 years in the SMC College of Dairy Science. Shri Haren Bura Gohain, Deputy Director, Dairy Development, Govt. of Assam narrated the situation of dairying in Assam. The house suggested to use ample land, water and natural resources at the best level for the development of dairy industry in Assam. Shri Aditya Kumar Jain, Manager, NDDB, Anand shared his experiences on the dairy processing. He also discussed how he used his knowledge of dairy technology to understand national and international food laws and represented India in many international forums. Dr. Vivek Upadhyay, a scientist from Ireland shared his views on quality projects for better research funding.

The 11th Alumni convention of SMC College of Dairy Science was organized on 9th January, 2015. About 350 graduates of SMC College attended this event. Dr. B. P. Shah, Principal and Dean SMC College of Dairy Science welcomed the dignitaries and the guests while Dr. J. B. Prajapati, President Alumni Association briefed about activities of Alumni Association and the unique initiative of the association to call back and honour the alumni who have put in more than 25 years of service to the society. The guest of honour for the function Dr. K. Rathnam, Managing Director, AMUL Dairy, Anand, in his address reminded the dairy professionals about their duty towards the society. He addressed on key challenges that the dairy industry will face in the coming years. The chief guest, Professor M. C. Varshneya, Vice Chancellor, Kamdhenu University, Gandhinagar threw light on the urgent need to improve the quality of milk along with increasing milk production. He also stressed the need to conserve indigenous milk breeds. In his Presidential address, Dr. N. C. Patel, Vice Chancellor, AAU, Anand, complemented the Alumni Association and remarked on the important role veterinarians and dairy technocrats have to play in the growth of dairy industry. Graduates and post graduates of the year 1989 and 1990 were honored for their contribution to dairy industry. Shri Hare Ram Singh, Director, Dairy Development, Bihar; Shri S. Yadav, Professor, Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal; Shri Haren Bura Gohain, Deputy Director, Dairy Development, Assam and Shri Sanjay Vij, Executive Vice President, HDFC Life, Mumbai were specially felicitated. Dr. J. R. Patel memorial award was presented to Dr. P. N. Thakar, former Professor and Head, Dairy Business Management Department and Dr. P. S. Prajapati, former Professor and Head, Dairy Technology Department, SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand for their contribution in the academic field. Dr. H. K. Desai, General Manager, AMUL Dairy, Anand and Shri Pranav Shah, Regional Sales Manager, SPX, Denmark were also honoured for their significant contribution to dairy industry. Best Student award was bestowed upon Shri Khushwantsinh Rathod for the year 2013 and Shri Shikhar Gaur for the year 2014.

FACULTY NEWSDr. J B Prajapati is the new principal of SMC College of Dairy Science…….

Dr. Jashbhai B. Prajapati is a Dairy Technology graduate from Gujarat Agricultural University and has done his Ph.D. in Dairy Microbiology from National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, India. Since last 34 years, he is serving at the Faculty of Dairy Science in various capacities and from 2004, he is the Head of Dairy Microbiology Department. He is involved in teaching, research and extension activities and his major areas of research are fermented foods, probiotics, synbiotics, lactic acid bacteria and their nutritional and health benefits. He is handling number of research projects sponsored by ICAR, DBT, State Govt. EU and has published more than 250 papers, including two text books. Indian Dairy Association honoured him with IDA Fellowship Award in recognition of his valuable services in furthering the cause of Indian Dairy Industry. He has guided several Ph.D. and M. Tech. students. He is a reviewer for many scientific journals and serving as an expert member for many other universities and institutions. Dr Prajapati is the Coordinator of Swedish South Asian Network on Fermented Foods since its inception. He is also a Member in Indian National Committee of International Dairy Federation (IDF) in 3 groups viz., Probiotics, Lactic acid bacteria & starters and Microbiological methods for analysis. He is also a member of Task Force on Inventory of Microorganisms with a Documented History of Use in Foods set-up by IDF. He is a Life member of several professional bodies like AFSTI, IDA, AMI, ISCA, GAAS,PAI, Biosensor Society of India, etc. Recently he is being conferred upon Prof. J P Trivedi Award by the Gujarat Association for Agricultural Sciences for his outstanding work in the field of probiotics.

Alumni association is proud of Dr. Jashbhai Prajapati and wishes him all success in his new role as Principal and Dean of SMC College of Dairy Science.

Retirements

Dr B. P. Shah retired as Principal and Dean, SMC College of Dairy Science on 28th February, 2015. Dr. Shah, M.E. (Mech. Engg.) from B.V.M., S.P.U., V.V. Nagar, Gujarat earned his Ph.D. in Dairy Engg. in the year 1993 from Sheth M.C. College of Dairy Science, Anand, Gujarat Agricultural University. He joined Sheth M. C. College of Dairy Science as lecturer in Dairy Engineering discipline in the year 1975 and served the department in various capacities. During his academic career, apart from teaching, he guided one M.Sc. and one Ph.D. student as major advisor and published more than 150 research and technical papers in different journals and handled four research projects. Dr. Shah became principal of the college on 2nd September, 2006. During his tenure as principal Dr. Shah was instrumental in organizing activities such as National Seminars, dairy door step seminars, Dairy Products Judging Contest and Dairy & Food Quizzes, Pashupalan Shibirs, Dairy Awareness programmes and creation of Suvidya, an Air-conditioned classroom complex with latest audio-visual aids as infrastructure facility for students. He was the receipient of meny awards and honours including Certificate of Merit by Institution of Engineers (India), First Prize by Gujarat Science Academy, First Best Paper Awards by Indian Dairy Association and Gujarat Science Congress; Hari Ohm Ashram Prerit Shri Bhaikaka Inter University Smarak Trust Award two times. Recently he was honoured with Felloship Award by National Academy of Dairy Science, NDRI, Karnal, Rashtriya Ratna award by New Delhi Friendship Forum and Dr. J.R. Patel Memorial Trust Award.

Dr. Punambhai S. Prajapati, Professor & Head, Dairy Technology Department, retired on 30th November, 2014. Dr. Prajapati obtained his B. Sc. (Dairy Technology ) Degree in the year 1976 from Sheth M.C. College of Dairy Science. He secured M.Sc. (Dairying in Dairy Technology) and Ph.D. (Dairying in Dairy Technology) Degree in the year 1979 and 1989 respectively from National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal. He joined Sheth M. C. College of Dairy Science as Assistant Professor in the year 1979. He served the college in various capacities and raised to level of Professor and Head , Dairy Technology Department, all the while proving himself to be a veteran academician. During his academic endeavor, he has been awarded Hari Om Ashram Prerit Bhaikaka Inter-University Smarak Trust Prizes thrice for best research Papers. Similarly awarded Best Research paper award thrice by Indian Dairy Association, New Delhi. He acted as CCPI of NAIP Component-1 for e-course sponsored by ICAR, New Delhi as well as PI & Co-worker in various other projects. He guided 13 post graduate students. He has actively contributed in the functioning and progress of various organizations such as Alumni Association, SMC College of Dairy science, Dr. J. R. Patel Memorial Charitable Trust, Indian Dairy Association, Gujarat

State Chapter, MMPO, Export Import Agency, etc. Dr. Prajapati was awarded by Dr. J.R. Patel Memorial Charitable Trust Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of teaching and research activities in the area of Dairy Science.

Both the teachers have been an integral part of teaching, research and administrative activities of our college and have served the Alumni Association. Their contributions to the alumni association and to their Alma mater will always be valued and remembered. The Alumni Association wishes them very happy, healthy and active retired life.

Awards and Recognitions

Dr. J B Prajapati and his team from Dairy Microbiology Department has been conferred with the Prof. J. P. Trivedi Award (2013) sponsored by Shri Hari Ohm Ashram and conferred by the Gujarat Association for Agricultural Sciences, for development of first Indian Probiotic Culture till commercial application.

Dairy Microbiology Department has deposited four lactic acid bacterial cultures, viz. Lactobacillus rhamnosus MTCC 5945, Lactobacillus rhamnosus MTCC 5946, Weisella cibaria MTCC 5947 and Weisella cibaria MTCC 5948 as patent deposits at MTCC-International Depository Authority (IDA) under Budapest Treaty.

Dr. Atanu Jana bagged the “Best Teacher Award” in the Faculty of Dairy Science for the year 2014-15, which was awarded to him during the 11th Annual Convocation of Anand Agricultural University, Anand by the Hon’ble Governor of Gujarat, Shri O.P. Kohli on 29th January, 2015. Dr. Jana took charge as Professor and Head, Department of Dairy Technology from 1st December, 2014.

Dr. A. Jana received the first prize in poster presentation for his research on ‘Mozzarella cheese made from partially homogenized milk’ at the National Seminar “Indian Dairy Industry – Opportunities & Challenges“ held at SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand on 8th January, 2015. He was also awarded with second prize in poster presentation for his research project on “Process standardization for preparation of Bhapa dahi through use of chakka and sweetened condensed milk” in the category ‘Product and Process Development’ during the 43rd Dairy Industry Conference held

A research poster on “Influence of Proteolytic activity of Lactobacillus helveticus MTCC5463 and release of bioactive peptides” by Dr Subrota Hati, Dr Sreeja V and Dr JB Prajapati has been awarded Best Poster Award (2nd Prize in QSM group) at 43rd Dairy Industry Conference, Science City, Kolkata on 21st Feb, 2015. Dr Subrota Hati and co authors Dr Surajit Mandal, Dr Kaushik Khamrui and Dr JB Prajapati won Best Paper Award (2nd Prize) for their article “Biofunctional Whey based beverages” published in Indian Dairyman, Vol 65(5) : 62-69 at 43rd Dairy Industry Conference, Science City, Kolkata on 21st Feb, 2015. Dr. Atanu Jana, Professor and Head, Dairy Technology was the Organizing Secretary for the National Seminar “Indian Dairy Industry – Opportunities & Challenges“ held at SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand on 8th January, 2015. Dr. Jana delivered

an invited talk on “Newer value-added ingredient for ice cream and frozen desserts” at the 43rd Dairy Industry Conference held during 19-21 February, 2015 at Kolkata. He was one of the Judge for judging the poster related to ‘Quality and Safety’ at the Dairy Industry Conference. Dr. Jana delivered an invited lecture on “Value addition to ice cream and frozen desserts” at the International Interactive Seminar “Food Processing Industry: New Entrepreneurial Opportunity with Sustainable Business Patterns” held during 7-8 July, 2014 at the Institute of Food Technology, Bundelkhand University, Jhansi. Dr. A. Jana was the convenor and conducted the “Dairy and Food Quiz Contest” along with Ms. Jarita Malik at SMC College of Dairy Science, Anand held on 7th October, 2014.

Dr Suja Senan, Assistant Professor, Dairy Microbiology presented a paper co-authored with Dr JB Prajapati on Bacterial community shifts in geriatric subjects in response to probiotic intervention revealed by high throughput DNA sequencing at a prestigious annual joint meeting of American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) organized at Kansas City, Missouri, USA during 20-24 July, 2014. She also presented another paper entitled Ion Torrent 16s rRNA Gene Amplicon Sequencing- A Novel Tool to Investigate the Effect of Probiotic Interventions on Gut Microbiome at a Symposium on Gut Microbiota, Probiotics and Their Impact Throughout the Lifespan at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA during 22-23 September, 2014. Both these presentations gave lot of publicity to the probiotic research being carried out by AAU at Anand and evoked lot of scientific interest.

Mr. Kunal M Gawai, Assistant professor, Dairy Microbiology, attended National training program on ‘Advances in Technology, Quality and Safety of Functional Dairy Foods’ at NDRI, Karnal during July 8-28, 2014.

Dr Sreeja V, Assistant Professor, Dairy Microbiology, received her PhD degree in Dairy Microbiology on 15th November 2014. Her thesis was on “Formulation and evaluation of different dosage forms of starter cultures and probiotics.” She has attended the ICAR sponsored Short Course on ”Metagenomics: Role of next generation sequencing and

As resource person Dr. Sreeja has delivered a lecture on “Improving raw milk quality: microbiological aspects during the Dairy Door Step Seminar organized by Alumni Association, SMC College of Dairy Science and Banaskantha Dist. Coop. Milk Producers Union Ltd., at Banas Dairy, Palanpur on 23rd August, 2014. Dr Sreeja was invited to present a paper on Probiotics in Functional Fermented Dairy Products” at UGC sponsored National Conference on ‘Perspectives, Potentials and Prejudices of Probiotics’ organized by Women’s Christian College, Chennai during 23–24 January, 2015.

Bhavbhuti M Mehta, Amit Kumar Jain, K N Wadhwani and K D Aparnathi (2014) has published a lead paper on “Properties and prospectus of Camel Milk” in a Souvenir cum lead papers at a State Level Seminar on “Camel Welfare and Productivity Enhancement Through Health Management” organized by College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry, AAU, Anand on 30th December, 2014.

Meeting with Alumni working in AssamOn 14th October 2014, fourteen alumni from Assam State had a meeting with Dr J.B. Prajapati, President, Alumni Association at Guwahati. All were very happy and gave a very emotional heartfelt welcome to Dr Prajapati creating an environment of virtual SMC and Munshi at Guwahati. Shri Haren Buragohain coordinated the event and all most all the alumni in Assam were invited. They discussed the typical problems of Dairying in Assam. It was decided to organize a technical seminar on “Dairy Development in the North East India” next academic year in collaboration with Veterinary college of Guwahati, Govt. of Assam and Alumni Association of SMC College of Dairy Science.

Govt of Assam is also planning to start a Dairy Science College and seek our advise. In the mean time, to promote technical manpower in the north east, special seats were approved by ICAR last year for B.Tech.(DT) course at NDRI, Karnal. Accordingly, last year 7 students were admitted at NDRI. As SMC College has very good reputation, the alumni also asked us to look for the possibilities such quota at Anand too. Dr Prajapati will explore the possibility of such quota at Anand. It

is possible to give admission to sponsored candidates from govt. dept.

The get-to-gather was a homely feeling for all and gave a ground to chat, remember old days and strengthen the alumni bond.

VISITSStudents of VIth and VIIIth semesters were taken for 16 days study tour for providing commercial exposure at various well-known dairy plants of Gujarat including Mother Dairy, Gandhinagar; Banas Dairy, Banaskantha; Sabar Dairy, Himmatnagar; Dudhsagar Dairy, Mehsana; Sumul Dairy, Surat; Baroda Dairy; Vadodara to name a few. The student were acquainted with various dairy products manufacturing and plant management systems.

STUDENTS CORNERMs. Binjan Patel, a PG student participated in National Level Elocution Competition organised by National Association of Agriculutral Scientists at IARI, New Delhi. She spoke on the subject Agriculture in next 25 years, “Agriculture 2040”. A total of 30 teams participated in this event. She won a Gold medal in this event.

EDUCATIONAL TOUR 2015

As part of the educational curricula, the final year students of SMC College of Dairy Science underwent an educational tour from 16th January to 31st January 2015.
