Cells in parallel strings
Vented cells and monoblocs may beconnected in parallel to give highercurrent capability. In the case of parallelconnected strings use batteries of thesame capacity, design and age only with amaximum of 4 parallel strings. Theresistance of the cables in each stringmust be the same, e.g. same cross-section, same length. Connect the batterystrings in parallel at the end terminals.Check that all contact surfaces are clean. Ifrequired, clean with a brass brush. Tightenthe terminal screws, taking care to use thecorrect torque loading (Tab. 1). To avoiddamage to the plastic materials, do notuse grease. Fit the covers supplied forprotection against inadvertent contact.Make sure that all caps are closed.

Carefully follow the polarity sequence toavoid short circuiting cell groups. A looseconnector can make adjusting the chargerdifficult, create erratic performance andpossible damage to the battery and/oreven personal injury. Finally, with the charger switched off, thebattery fuses removed and the loaddisconnected, connect the battery to theD.C. power supply.Ensure that the polarity is correct - positiveterminal of the battery to the positiveterminal of the charger. Switch on thecharger and charge according to thecommissioning charge paragraph below. The first charge must be monitored toensure that the limits are not exceededand that no unacceptable temperaturesoccur. The electrolyte level on delivery can vary. The final electrolyte level will be achievedafter the commissioning charge. Smallquantities (up to 3 mm) can be topped upwith distilled water.
COMMISSIONING CHARGEWhen commissioning a new batterysupplied filled and charged (first charge),follow procedure a) b) or c).Procedures a) or b) are recommended.
a) IU method (boost charge): At a raised voltage of 2.33 – 2.40V/cell. Thecharging time will be 12 to 36 hoursdepending on the initial chargeconditions. The current must be limited to4 x I10.b) I method (boost charge):With a constant current of 2.5-5 A/100 Ahwith a final charging voltage of 2.50-2.75V/cell. The charging must be monitored. The charging time can be 6 to 24 hours. Ifthe maximum temperature of +45°C isexceeded, charging must be terminated, continued at a reduced current, ortemporarily switched to float charging.Boost charging must be immediatelyswitched off or switched to float chargingwhen the fully charged state is reached.c) Float charge: With the recommended float voltageaccording to table 5. Full capacity will beobtained after a longer period of 4 to 6weeks depending on the state of charge. The fully charged condition has beenachieved when, for a period of 2 hours, thecell voltages do not continue to increaseand the charging current does notcontinue to decrease. The nominalspecific gravity shall be achieved at theend of charge (tolerance: ± 0.01).For minimum end of charge voltagesusing the constant current characteristicsee table 2.Tab. 2: end of charge voltages

STANDBY OPERATION/FLOATCHARGE
Float Voltage
The recommended float / charge voltageis 2.23 V/cell or 2.25 V/cell per cell at 20°Cdepending on the specific type (see table5). The charger voltage amounts to Ufloper cell x no. of cells (tolerance ± 1 %).If the average battery temperatureexceeds the recommended operatingtemperature range of +10°C to +30°C, thefloat charge voltage shall be reduced by(Tcell - 30) x 0.003V/ cell when thetemperature exceeds +30°C (but not lessthan 2.18V/c) and shall be increased by (10– Tcell) x 0.003V/cell when the temperatureis less +10°C.
Deviations of individual cell voltages of –0.05 to +0.10 V/c may be observed. However the total voltage of the batteryshall be within the limits stated above.
Charging Current
Limitation of the charging current is notrequired under float charge condition.
At higher charge voltages up to 2.40 V/cthe charge current shall be limited to 4 xI10.After reaching the gassing voltage of 2.40 V/c a current limit of 2.5 to 5 A/100 Ahis recommended (see Table 3).
Tab. 3: Limits of charging current
Boost Charge
To reduce the recharge time the batterymay be recharged at 2.33 – 2.40 V/cell witha current limited to 4 x I10 . Boost chargingmust be switched to float charging whenthe fully charged state is reached.
Ripple Current
In the standby operation mode theeffective value of the A.C. ripple currentmust not exceed 5 A per 100 Ah C10,otherwise reduced operational life mustbe expected.
TEMPERATUREThe permissible operating temperaturerange is 0°C to +55°C.The recommended operating temperaturerange is +10°C to +30°C. All technical datarelates to the rated temperature of +20°C. Higher temperatures reduce theoperational life. Lower temperaturesreduce the available capacity.Do not expose cells to direct sunlight.
Effect of temperature on capacity
If the battery operating temperature isdifferent from 20°C, a correcting factor isto be applied to capacity value taking intoaccount discharge time.Tab. 4: temperature correcting factors
Example: A battery with a capacity of 200Ah at 20°C for a 5 hour discharge will havea capacity of 182 Ah when discharged at10°C (200 x 0.91).

NOMINAL LEVEL
Correction of S.G. according
to temperature
Electrolyte S.G. varies withtemperature. If temperature is above orbelow 20°C, specific gravity readingsmust be corrected.The temperature correction factor forS.G. is –0.0007 per °C.Example: S.G. of 1.230 kg/l at +35°C corresponds to a S.G. of 1.240 kg/l at+20°C.
DISCHARGING
End of Discharge Voltage
The battery must not be dischargedmore than the capacity specified in theperformance tables. Deeper dischargesmay damage the battery and shorten itsoperational life. As a general rule theend of discharge voltage shall be limitedto the values listed below:
Tab. 7: end voltages
Individual cell voltages may fall belowUE by not more than 0.2 V/c. A lowvoltage disconnect is recommended toprevent deep discharge. Specialattention should be given to small loadsthat are not automatically disconnectedat the end of discharge
Discharged Cells
Batteries must not be left in adischarged condition after supplyingthe load, but must be immediatelyreturned to recharge mode. Failure toobserve these conditions may result ingreatly reduced service life andunreliability.
Important notice:
Each deep discharge is abusive andcould affect the life expectancy of thebattery.
TESTING
Capacity tests are to be carried out inaccordance with EN 60896-11. Checkthat the battery is fully charged. Beforetesting new batteries it must be ensuredthat a sufficient commissioning chargehas been applied, the S.G. is relating tothe nominal value (± 0.01 kg/l) and thebattery is fully charged. Lower S.G.results in lower capacity.
RECHARGE
After a discharge the battery can berecharged at the operating voltage (floatcharge voltage). To reduce the charging time therecharging can be carried out with theboost charge voltage of 2.33 to 2.40 V/c.The recharging times depend on thecharging procedure and on the chargingcurrent available. Generally 10 to 20hours duration can be expected atcharging currents between 5 A and 40 Aper 100 Ah nominal capacity. Recharge1.2 times the discharged capacity. During recharging up to 2.40 V/cell theeffective value of the A.C. ripple currentcan reach a temporary maximum 10 Aper 100 Ah nominal capacity.
Equalising Charge
After a deep discharge or afterinadequate recharging, an equalisingcharge is necessary. This can be carriedout as follows: a) at constant boost charge voltage of
2.33 – 2.40 V/cell for a maximum of 72 hours.
b) with I charge method according tothe commissioning charge paragraphabove, clause b).If the maximum temperature of 45°C isexceeded, charging must be terminatedor continued at a reduced current ortemporarily switched to float charging.
The end of equalising charge is reachedwhen the S.G. of the electrolyte and thecell voltages have not risen for a period of2 hours. Because the permissible system voltagelevel may be exceeded when charging atincreased voltages, suitable measuresshould be taken to protect the loadcircuits, e.g. charging «off line».
MAINTENANCE/CHECKS
Water topping
Top up the electrolyte level to the nominallevel, but without exceeding the « Max »mark. Only demineralised or distilledwater (purity grade: max. conductivity 10µS/cm) shall be used. After topping-up an equalising chargecan be applied to reduce the time forhomogenisation of the electrolytedensity.
Cleaning
Keep containers and lids dry and freefrom dust. Cleaning must be undertakenwith a damp cotton cloth withoutman-made fibres or addition of cleaningagents. Avoid static dischargesgenerated during cleaning.
Plugs
Leak-resistant plugs with a frit or flamearrestor plugs with a ceramic funnel mustnot be cleaned with water or positionedup side down Should the frit bemoistened with electrolyte, the plug mustbe replaced during regular maintenance.Standard plugs without frit can becleaned with purified water if necessary.Dry them thoroughly before fitting themback onto the battery.
Readings – Log book
Every 6 months, check the total voltage atthe battery terminals. Also check thevoltage, S.G., and the temperature of pilotcells and record the room temperature.Once a year, in addition to the above, takereadings of individual voltages and S.G.of the electrolyte. Measure the S.G. eitherbefore topping up water or after boostcharge.Keep a logbook in which the measuredvalues can be noted as well as powercuts, discharge tests, equalising charges, topping up dates, storage times andconditions, etc.

a) IU Kennlinie (Starkladung):
bei erhöhter Spannung von 2,33 – 2,40V/Zelle. Die Ladezeit beträgt je nachAnfangsladezustand 12 bis 36 Stunden. DerLadestrom sollte 4 x I10 nicht überschreiten.
b) l-Kennlinie (Starkladung):

10 A je100 Ah Nennkapazität betragen.
STARKLADUNG/
AUSGLEICHSLADUNG

Densidades menores danlugar a capacidades inferiores.
