    VerticalThin FilmDryer

    Process Features

Continuous processing of liquid and pump-able products to get dry solids in one step

Gentle treatment of products thanks toshort residence time and if necessary operation under vacuum

Fully enclosed design to treat explosive, toxic and hazardous substances.

Complete recovery of solvents Contact drying to ensure optimal energy

utilization Self-cleaning of heating surface, hence a

    constant high heat transfer

Applications Agrochemicals (Atrazine etc.) Waste water and spent liquors Chlorides, bromides, sulfates Silane recovery Benzosulfonic acid Chemical intermediates Solvent recovery from waste Carbonates, phosphates Silicon, silicon carbide Xanthates Dyes and pigments

Glycerine recovery from salt Sodium formiate Boron carbide, boron nitride Caffeine, condiments

Thin film dryers are characterised bya mechanically agitated thin productlayer. The film thickness is normally inthe range of less than one up to a fewmillimetres. In vertical thin film dryers the wetfeed is distributed over the heatedwall by a distributing ring and evenly

applied to it in a thin film by hingedpendulum blades. Running down-ward the product passes typicallythrough an evaporation zone, then aslurry or cristallisation zone and final-ly a powder zone. Most of the liquidis removed in the evaporation andslurry zone while in the powder zonethe surface moisture from the solid

particles and some of the internalmoisture is driven off.The volatile components driven outof the product by heat pass upwardthrough the dryer counter-current tothe product flow and are con-densed in an external condenser. The powder obtained at the bottom is

discharged continuously via a suit-able gaslock system. The total resi-dence time of the product is bet-ween 30 and 60 seconds.

    HorizontalThin Film Dryer

Horizontal thin film dryers are con-tinously operated contact dryers fora broad range of applicationsunder vacuum, normal pressureand overpressure. They consist of ahorizontal, externally heated shell

with end covers, the inlet and outlet

nozzles for feed, vapour and finalproduct and a rotor with screwed-on elements supported in externalbearings. The wet product fedthrough the inlet nozzle is conveyedsteadily by the rotor elements alongthe heated dryer wall in a thin film. The film thickness is normally sever-al millimetres.

Applications DRYING of slurries, sludges, pastes, filter cakes, wet powders HEATING and COOLING of solids MELTING (Urea etc.)

REACTION MIXING of solids with liquids and subsequent thermal processes

Process Features Continuous, fully enclosed processing Short residence time, small product hold-up Low energy consumption Superior mixing efficiency Flexible through exchangeable rotor elements Self-cleaning of heating surface Easy access

    REACTOTHERM

    Process Features

Self-cleaning heating surfaces Constant heat transfer with fouling

products Intensive mixing and kneading effect Optimal heat/mass transfer with pasty

and sticky products Universal use for liquid, pasty and

solid products Several processes in one machine

    Applications

    DRYING: Polymers Intermediates for pharma

Fine chemicals Food Dyes, optical brighteners Antioxydants Phosphate salts Surfactants Paint and varnish sludges

REACTIONS: Resorcinol Salicylic acid Benzoic acid Sodium cyanate

RESIDUE TREATMENT: TDI-recovery Chemical waste with organic solvents Radioactive waste

The inside of the shell is cleaned bymixing bars avoiding the fouling ofheat exchange surfaces and the for-mation of agglomerates. Shell, shaft and discs can be heated or

cooled. Continuous or batch opera-tion under vacuum, atmospheric pres-sure and overpressure is possible.

The REACTOTHERM is used forthermal processing of a wide va-riety of pasty, viscous, fouling andlumping products. It consists of acylindrical, horizontal shell and a

rotor with segmented discs and mix-ing bars. Stationary mixing hooksare attached to the inside of theshell. The close clearance betweenthe mixing hooks, the segmenteddiscs and the rotor results in a highmixing and kneading effect andlargely self-cleaning properties ofthe rotor.

    ROVACTOR

The ROVACTOR is an efficientcontact processor with high localmixing effect for the treatment offilter cakes, powders and pellets. The ROVACTOR consists of a

cylindrical or trough shaped bodyand a hollow agitator shaft fittedwith special paddles in form ofsegmental discs.Heating or cooling is effected indi-rectly by means of steam or atransfer fluid via the segmentedrotor discs and the jacketed body.

Continuous and batch processesunder vacuum, atmospheric pres-

sure or overpressure are possible.Product residence times are bet-ween a few minutes and severalhours and can be adjusted in alarge range. The processor can beeasily protected against wear andtear.

    CONTIVAC NDPProcessor for Pharmaceutical

ApplicationsThe CONTIVAC NDP processorwas developed by Buss-SMS-Can-zler for use in production process-es with special hygienic require-ments. This processor combinesthe advantages of continuous thinfilm drying with a special rotatingspray nozzle (patent pending) that

allows for CIP cleaning. The indi-vidually adjustable heating andcooling zones in the thin film dryeropens up new opportunities forthin film drying technology to beused in complex processes. The basic operations of mixing, reacting, flashing and drying canbe carried out in the same ma-chine, with several different sub-stance streams being fed into theprocessor simultaneously.

The CONTIVAC NDP processoroffers manufacturers in the phar-maceutical-, fine chemical indus-trys and in the food and pet foodindustries, with new possibilitiesfor process optimisation and quali-ty improvement, which are notavailable with conventional batchmachines.Batch-operated dryers have prob-

lems with products, which passthrough a sticky, viscous phaseduring drying.Such cases require very long resi-dence times which can causeunwanted side-reactions, thermaldamage to the product, and/orcolour changes. Experience hasproven that the residence time inthe CONTIVAC NDP processorcan be reduced up to 500 times.

Further advantages compared tobatch systems result from the lowinvestment and operating costs.

    Process features

Combination of variousbasic operations in onemachine (no transport pro-blems, no contaminationof the product)

Very short residence times(minimum thermal stress ofproduct, high through-put)

Very low hold-up(minimum losses atproduct change)
