In 2008-09, Drury is paying tribute to its rich basketball his-tory by recognizing the 100-year mark since the Panthers first organized game of record, played on January 9, 1909. History books indicate that Drury had started a basketball team as early as 1903, but on a much looser, intramural-like basis with no records kept at the time. Our cover this season depicts some of the key people in DU basketball history, one per decade dating back to the 1930s. BARBARA COWHERDAssistant AD/Senior Women’s AdministratorThe Panther head volleyball coach for 20 years, Cowherd accepted the position of assistant director of athletics six years ago and is now largely responsible for event scheduling and assisting in promotions/marketing. The program’s Senior Women’s

Administrator and assistant professor in the exercise and sport science department, Cowherd has been an invaluable part of the Drury athletic administration staff the past seven years. A 1979 graduate of Missouri Southern State College, she earned her mas-ter’s degree from Pittsburg (Kan.) State. Barb and husband Gene reside in Purdy.

DAN CASHEL Assistant AD/Compliance Coordinator

A member of the athletic department since 1978, Dan Cashel began his affili-ation with Drury in the fall of 1974 as a member of the college’s admission’s staff. A native of Springfield, he gradu-ated from Benedictine College in Atchi-

son, Kan., in 1974. Since the fall of 1978, Cashel has handled numerous positions in the athletic department, including its intramural director and men’s tennis coach. He was Director of Sports Information from 1978-2005, and his sports publications won 30 national awards. As senior assistant athletic director, he handles a variety of tasks, in addition to his role as Drury’s NCAA compliance coordinator. Dan has one daughter, Malorie.

Dr. Edsel Matthews moved to a newly created position of Vice President For Athletic Affairs in June of 2007 after serving as Drury’s Director of Athletics since 2003.In his new position, Matthews serves as the primary fundraiser for the athletic department and oversees all aspects of Drury athletics

while working closely with new AD Pat Atwell. While at Drury, Matthews has helped Drury make the switch to the Great Lakes Valley Conference and add new sports like the highly successful, first-year DU baseball program of last season and this year’s new entry, softball. Under his direction, the Panthers’ finished a best-ever ninth place in the Director’s Cup all-sports competition for NCAA Division II in 2006-07. Matthews, a Southwest Missouri State graduate, was a former basketball assistant and head coach of the Panthers before joining the Springfield R-12 Schools as their Director of Athletics/Activities Director for the next 25 years starting in 1978, where his tenure brought significant change and advancement for the city’s athletic programs. Matthews was recognized as the Missouri Athletic Director of the Year in 1984 and was selected in 1990 for the National Award of Merit, naming him one of the elite athletic administrators in America. Matthews is a member of the Drury Athletics Hall of Fame, the Springfield Area Sports Hall of Fame and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame. He and his wife of 43 years, Becky, have three married children (Beth, Cheryl and Mark) and five grandchildren.

Pat Atwell was named Drury’s director of athletics on June 7, 2007, in a joint move when former AD Dr. Edsel Matthews was promoted to a newly created position, Vice President for Athletic Development. Atwell had spent the past 16 years at a fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member school, Quincy (Ill.) University, where he

had served as athletic director since 2001 and helped the Hawks not only become highly competitive in the GLVC, but construct several new facilities in his tenure. Atwell was also a highly successful head baseball coach with the Hawks from 1991 til he assumed the AD’s role. Atwell coached the Hawks to a record of 284-196-3 over the next 10 years, making him the all-time winningest coach in the history of the program. He led Quincy to Division II Tournament appearances in 1997 and 1999 and to back-to-back 40-win seasons in 1999 and 2000. Atwell was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and produced six All-Americans, including first-teamer Josh Rabe, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round of the 2000 Major League Baseball amateur draft, and pitcher Josh Kinney, who reached the major leagues in 2006 with the St. Louis Cardinals, serving as a key contributor on the World Series championship team. A native of Andover, N.Y., Atwell graduated from Salem-Teikyo (W.V.) University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in physical education in 1983. He also earned his Master’s of Arts degree in education from Salem-Teikyo in 1990. Atwell and his wife, Lisa, are the parents of two children. Melissa is a sophomore at Catholic High School and Eric a seventh-grader at Immaculate Conception.

COACHING STAFFPLAYER PROFILES


In just four seasons since taking over the Drury men’s basketball program, Steve Hesser has quickly established the Panthers as an annual contender for both Great Lakes Valley Conference honors and the NCAA Division II Tournament.The 2007-08 campaign was Drury’s most rewarding as a D-II member to date, as the Panthers posted a final mark

of 25-6, captured their first GLVC championship courtesy of a GLVC Tournament title in a thrilling one-point overtime win over Lewis at Weiser Gym, and made a third straight trip to the NCAA-II Tournament, falling to Gannon in the opening round.Hesser will now enter Year Five of guiding the Panthers with an overall mark of 88-31, his .739 winning percentage the best by a Drury basketball coach in the program’s illustrious 100-year history for coaches who spent more than one season on the sidelines. Hesser’s GLVC mark since the Panthers joined the prestigious 14-team league is 42-15 (.737), the most victories posted by a GLVC member in that stretch as Drury has reached the league’s eight-team post-season field in each of its three seasons.And Hesser has continued the storied Drury tradition of winning at the venerable Weiser Gym, taking a four-year mark of 54-7 (.885) in the venerable, 60-year-old facility that will make way for the 3,200-seat O’Reilly Family Events Center as the new home of Panthers’ basketball starting with the 2009-10 season.The 25 victories last season were the most by Drury since it moved to the NCAA Division II level in 1994-95 and the most by a Panther team since the 1985-86 squad finished with a 25-10 mark as an NAIA member. It also represented the fourth straight 20-win season in four tries by Hesser’s Panthers, who had captured 21 victories in each of his first three seasons at DU after a promising career as coach at Springfield’s Glendale High School.

The results make it clear that the former long-time high school coach has had no problems getting young athletes at the next step to understand that basketball is basketball, whatever the level. Then again, that’s what then-Drury athletic director Dr. Edsel Matthews believed all along when he tabbed Hesser as the 19th head coach in the history of Panthers’ basketball in the spring of 2004, after the latter had put together a lengthy, successful run at Glendale. His five-year stint with the Falcons produced a 14-12 mark in his initial campaign, then a stretch where Glendale won an average of 21 games over the next four seasons. But Hessser’s run of coaching success started long before he arrived in Springfield, which explains why in 2007, the Stillwater, Okla. native was elected into the Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Most of his most famed work was done as head coach during a seven-year run at Bartlesville High School, where his teams won state titles in 1989, 1991 and 1992 and twice earned state Coach of the Year honors for Hesser. His Bartlesville teams also finished second in the state in 1988 and made the state quarterfinals in 1986 and 1990. He also

coached the prep programs at Pauls Valley and Stillwater, leading the latter to four conference titles and two state tournament appearances in six seasons. His prep coaching record in Oklahoma was 262-142, including a 147-47 mark at Bartlesville. Hesser, a 1980 Oklahoma State University graduate, also picked up valuable college experience early in his career as an assistant coach for one season with Billy Tubbs at the University of Oklahoma for one season before he accepted the job at Bartlesville. After the 1992 state championship campaign, he decided to return to the college ranks to serve as an assistant coach to Jim Kerwin - his high school coach - at NCAA Division I Western Illinois University, before a family illness led him back home to take the job at his alma mater, Stillwater High School. There,

his Stillwater teams won four conference titles and made two state tournament appearances in six seasons before Hesser moved to Springfield to accept the Glendale position, where his Falcons annually ranked among the best teams in the Ozark Conference and southwest Missouri. As a player, Hesser was a two-sport standout at Stillwater High, excelling in both basketball and football. He started his college playing career in both sports at New Mexico Military Academy before moving on to finish his college education, and playing days, at the University of Central Oklahoma. His playing career ultimately cut short by a leg injury, Hesser finished his undergraduate degree work at Oklahoma State, then earned his master’s degree in secondary education from Oklahoma in 1985. In addition to his head coaching duties, Hesser is a member of the Drury Exercise and Sport Science faculty. Hesser is also a sought-after public speaker at numerous coaching clinics, evident by the fact this fall he was one of

the featured speakers on his offensive philosophies before more than 700 of his peers who’d gathered at Columbia College.Hesser and his wife, Patty, have one son; Tyler is a Drury graduate and former a student assistant basketball coach for the Panthers who now is an accountant in Springfield.

Entering his fourth season on the Drury bas-ketball coaching staff is assistant Ja Havens, who serves as the Panthers’ recruiting coordinator and top bench aide to head coach Steve Hesser. Havens joined Coach Hesser’s staff in June of 2005 after spending four years on the coaching staff at the University of Tulsa for coaches John

Phillips and Alvin “Pooh” Williamson. While Havens was with NCAA Division I Tulsa, the Hurricane won a Western Athletic Conference regular season title, a WAC Tournament championship and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on two occasions. Prior to his stint at TU, Havens spent two seasons as an assistant at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where he helped guide the Redmen to the Lone Star Conference North Division championship both years while fashioning a two-year record of 47-12. Havens began his coaching career with one season as an as-

New to the Panthers’ basketball coaching staff this season is Dylan Dudley, formerly the associate head coach at Westminster College in Fulton.Dudley, a 2000 graduate of Sullivan (Ill.) High School and ‘05 gradu-ate of Illinois College, helped Westminster to an overall 33-16 mark over the past two seasons. He played collegiately at

sistant at St. Gregory’s (Okla.), where his recruiting class won 20 games and advanced to the NAIA national tournament one season later. The Lewisville, Texas native earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1998 from Northeastern State, where he was also a basketball standout for two seasons after transferring from St. Gregory’s, at the time a two-year school.. Ja (pronounced “Jay”) also earned a master’s degree in college teaching/health science and kinesiology from NSU. Havens and wife Angie have three children: Sons Trey (7) and Trent (1) and daughter Tatum (5).

Jim Carr is in his third season of working with the Drury basketball Panthers in the areas of strength and conditioning. The 54-year-old Carr has spent the past 10 years as the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator at the Federal Medical Center for Prison-ers in Springfield, where he works with the inmates in a variety of fitness classes and training methods. Carr was born in Bruce, Miss., but spent much of his child-hood in the Ironton, Mo., area before living in Springfield past 29 years. Carr played four years of basketball at the College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, graduating in 1972, and finished his master’s degree at Drury in the summer of 2005. Carr’s brother, Chris, played six seasons in the NBA after a stellar career at Southern Il-linois University. Carr and wife Carol have three children: Timothy (29), Angela (25) and Christopher (18).

Also joining the Drury coaching staff for the first time is new graduate assistant coach Richard Kemper. Kemper is a 2005 graduate of Missouri State University, where he served as manager for the men’s basketball team and Coach Barry Hinson for four years. During that time the Bears made two straight Missouri Valley Con-ference Tournament Final appearances and made an NIT appearance.Kemper comes to Drury after serving as an assistant coach the past three seasons at St. Gregory’s University in Shawnee, Okla. His numerous duties included scouting, recruiting, on-floor coaching, weight training and conditioning and player develop-ment. Kemper also was a manager in high school at Christian Brothers College (CBC) in St. Louis where he graduated in 2001.

Paden enters his second season as the trainer for the basketball Panthers and is an assistant on the training staff under the direction of head trainer Erin KinemanPaden is a graduate of Oklahoma State University, where he served as a student athletic trainer from 2000 to 2005. He received his Master’s degree from Missouri State University, where he was an assistant trainer with coach Barry Hinson’s Bears basketball squads.At Drury, Paden works specifically with men’s basketball and women’s soccer. He is a native of Broken Arrow, Okla, and married wife Claudia in 2006.

Drury BasketBall GraDuation rateThe success of most athletic programs is often based solely on its win-loss record. Additionally, many programs want to know if any of its athletes earned individual honors that separate them from other athletes. Was the program exciting and did it draw large crowds? Many college athletic programs base their “success” solely on these factors. Although these factors also are important at Drury, the athletic department uses another barometer in determining the success of the program. The graduation of the Drury athletes is equally important to any of the aforementioned items to the coaches and athletic staff. In October of 1989 the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation established a Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics with the charge of developing and monitoring a sports reform agenda. In March of 1993 the Commission submitted its final report. The Knight Commission’s impact on college athletics has been profound. One of the results is the NCAA requirement that its member institutions report their graduation rates. Drury has complied with this NCAA requirement

while maintaining a separate study on the graduation rate of its student-athletes. In either case the Drury graduation rate has been most impressive. For the purposes of this article the graduation study and the conclusions are easy to follow. In this study, if a student-athlete was a member of the Drury basketball team for his final year of athletic eligibility, the question is simple: Did that student-athlete ultimately earn his college degree? This article focuses exclusively on the basketball program. Included are the past 29 graduation classes. Again, the question is simply: If you played your final year of college eligibility at Drury, did you earn a college degree? Over the past 29 years 98 basketball players fit into this category. Of these 98 athletes, 97 did earn their degree from Drury. This translates into a graduation rate of 99 percent (97 of 98). These figures tell a different kind of success story. Shown on this page is a breakdown of the past 29 years, the seniors eligibility-wise and their graduation story.

Drury Basketball Philosophy In 1965 the Drury athletic department developed a philosophy of athletics that used as its cornerstone the motto: “excellence in athletics and academics.” In 1977 Drury head basketball coach and athletic director, Edsel Matthews, put this philosophy in writing as to how it helped determine the type of student-athlete the basketball program sought. Although coaches have changed the philosophy has remained intact. The following is that writing in its original form with the only revisions being updated figures. It continues to be.... The Philosophy of Drury Basketball:

At a time when many schools are using their athletic program solely as an entertainment and economic tool, Drury University is indeed unique. The “Mark of the Cat” stands for excellence in athletics and academics. In the last 38 years the Panthers have been in post-season national tournament playoffs 30 times. It has been the policy of the coaches to recruit players who not only have the ability to play basketball, but also to earn a degree. Consequently, nearly every player who has finished his eligibility at Drury has earned a degree the same year. Also, 99 percent of those players who were on the squad for over one year graduated.

Because of Drury’s philosophy it has attracted outstanding student-athletes. Not only has this philosophy produced 26 players who have received All-America honors, six players drafted in the professional draft, and numerous players who have played internationally...but it has produced an even greater number of doctors, lawyers, successful businessmen, teachers and coaches. No other team in the Midwest has approached the success of the Panthers in the last 38 years. The future appears to hold even better things. The “Mark of the Cat” will continue to stand for a young man who excels in athletics and academics.

Drury will honor 100 years of Panthers basketball this season in

recognition of the school’s first recorded, organized game played

on January 9, 1909.

It starts with the cover of this media guide and the 2008-09

commemorative poster, which includes a photo with a living

Drury legend from each decade dating back to the 1930s, and

will continue with festivities throughout the season.

When the Panthers play host to Northern Kentucky at Weiser

Gym on January 17th, all former Drury basketball players will

be invited back to the game to be recognized at halftime of the

showdown with the Norse, with several events planned for the

returnin Panthers around the event.

Drury Panthers basketball has put together a century of

excellence, not only with its work on the court, but off of it –

having graduated all but one player who finished his eligibility

as a Panther dating back to 1980. On the floor, the Panthers

are currently riding a three-year streak of NCAA-II national

tournament appearances and are preparing to defend their first

Great Lakes Valley Conference championship. In three previous

seasons as a member of the prestigious conference, the Panthers

have won the GLVC West twice and posted more victories in

that stretch (42) than any other league member.

But that’s just the recent history … there’s the 1379-845 record

in the program’s history for an outstanding .620 winning

percentage … the 15 national tournament appearances as

a member of the NAIA, including the 1978-79 national

championship … the five NCAA-II Tournament appearances

since the school made the move to the next level in 1994 … and

the countless number of players who not only starred at Drury,

but have become key figures after college in nearly every walk

of life.

That is what Drury Panthers Basketball is all about … and why

we celebrate in 2008-09.

The Drury basketball Panthers have accomplished plenty in coach Steve Hesser’s four seasons at the helm.A Great Lakes Valley Confer-ence championship? Check. Last winter, when the Panthers rolled to their second GLVC West Divi-sion title in three seasons as a league member, then plowed their way through the field – including a thrilling overtime victory against Lewis at Weiser Gym – to pocket their first GLVC Tournament title.

National polls? Sure. Drury has cracked the national Top 10 in the polls each of the past two seasons, and the respect for the program now is obvious – despite the loss of two key offensive weapons to graduation (Collins Harris and Steven Gum), the Panthers are No. 17 in the Division II Bulletin national Top 25 preseason poll this season. That’s the respect that comes when you’ve won more games than any other team in your league over the past three years (42), and have won 21 or more in each of Hesser’s four seasons, including 25 last year (most since Drury moved to NCAA D-II in 1994).Invitations to the D-II Big Dance? Three of them in a row, to be exact. But therein lies the catch. Of all the many things for the Panthers and their stellar trio of seniors who’ve been in the program for four years – Adam White, Tim Brown and Chris Ijames – to be able to brag about, they still can’t claim a victory in the NCAA Tournament. It has been three first-round exits for a savvy group of veterans who, frankly, are tired of the one and dones.“It definitely bothers us,” Brown says. “That’s something we came here to do – to win, and to win in the national tournament. That’s just part of getting to where we want to be.”“This is our last year,” added White, “and I’d really like to get a couple of wins in the tournament to make up for the last three years. But you’ve got to get there first.”Will things be different this season? It depends largely on how quickly one of the most talented freshman groups in Drury his-tory can pick up the nuances of the college game and provide the necessary depth and assistance to the seniors. Same goes for the two-man sophomore class of Alfred Nelson and Quinton Branch, who each see playing time opened up for the taking now by the graduation losses of All-GLVC perform-ers Harris and Gum.Can the youngsters hold up for a season’s worth of grinding in the always tough GLVC, where the likes of Southern Indiana, Quincy, Northern Kentucky and Kentucky Wesleyan, among others, have reloaded with their usual collections of D-I trans-fers and former juco stars? “They don’t have a choice,” laughed

Brown.“All league play can wear you down, but with the talent and reputation of some of our league members, the GLVC is definitely a grind,” Hesser says.But just as much as the readi-ness of the younger players to contribute will be a factor in Drury’s success, so to will be the improvements of the veterans. And that also includes 6-5 senior guard/forward Jamel Grant, who provided the Panthers with a spark off the bench last season – including the game-winning tip-in at the overtime buzzer to beat Lewis for the GLVC Tourna-ment title – but must step into a more prominent offensive role this season.“The number one thing is the improvement of our older guys and what they bring to the table, which will allow those young guys to grow up,” Hesser says. “(The freshmen) are definitely going to have to contribute, or else we’re going to be in trouble.”White, Ijames and Brown certainly are capable, as each of the three has definitely had their offensive moments. Brown averaged 7.4 points as a junior after scoring 7.6 points per game as a sophomore. But he went for a career-high 19 points against Quincy late last season, one of four games of 17 or more points his junior season. And while he didn’t score a lot in the three games of the GLVC Tourna-ment, the 5-foot-10 Brown played the point guard role masterfully compil-ing 28 assists to just three turnovers in earning All-Tournament honors.“He set people up last year and scored when the opportunity was there for him,” Hesser said. “Now he needs to be more of a scoring threat this year.”The 6-foot-5 Ijames is the most likely source for a consistent jump in points to help replace the 18 per game last season from Harris and 14 points per contest by Gum. Ijames went for a career-high 28 points in the GLVC title game win over Lewis, one of eight times in 31 games he scored 15 or more points, but then followed it with just

six points in the NCAA Tournament first-round loss to Gannon in Allendale, Mich. “Chris has done it, but just hasn’t done it consistently, and that’s the key,” Hesser says. “Is he going to be more productive night in and night out?” The gritty, 6-4 White has been the most con-sistent offensive threat of the three last season with his career-high 10.6 points per game, reaching double-figures in 20 of 31 games while hitting 53 percent of his shots from the floor.

“Adam has not looked to score in three years here, and now he has to,” Hesser says. “I loved it when a coach told me to shoot more. That’s what every player wants to hear.”And White can live with that – if it helps the Panthers get to where they need to go.“We had guys in the past who had proven themselves as scorers, and I just wanted to do what I had to for us to win,” says White, the

team’s leading rebounder last season with 6.1 boards per game. “If I need to score more for us to win, I’m willing to do that.”They’ll likely need it. The offensive threats of the past have departed, and the schedule ahead for DU basketball stays the same – tough. The Panthers have non-league tests with NCAA-II tourney teams from last season like MIAA favorite and pre-season national Top 10 Southwest Baptist, Gulf South Confer-ence favorite Ouachita Baptist, Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii (in the Hoop N’ Surf Classic) in addition to the usual powers of the GLVC, where Southern Indiana is the co-favorite with DU in the GLVC West and Northern Kentucky and Kentucky Wesleyan are picked to rule the East.The Panthers clearly are well-stocked on the perimeter with Brown, White, the swingman Grant and freshmen Dennon Mitchell from Putnam City (North), Okla., and former Kicka-poo standout Kyle Vaughan joining the ultra-athletic Branch in

providing quality depth. The 6-5 Long, a former Waynesville star, can also play the guard/forward role with his ability to knock down 3-pointers, as can Grant. Both Mitchell and Long were proven scorers at the prep level and have shown in the preseason an ability to carry that on into the college game.It’s in the paint where the situation will need to sort itself out. Ijames, the team’s best post defender, will likely find himself playing inside frequently on that end. Help will likely come from the solidly built, 6-foot-5 Allen – another former Kickapoo standout – and 6-8 fresh-man Keith McCullough as they compete with the wiry 6-6 Nelson for the inside minutes.Yes, the Panthers aren’t just loaded with height. But neither have been any of Hesser’s previous four teams at Drury, which have com-bined to win 88 games in that stretch. With the quickness and athleti-cism clearly present with this group, don’t be surprised if the Panthers throw in a few wrinkles in their approach this winter.“Subtle changes,” Hesser said. “Our emphasis is in different places. We’re going to try to be more up-tempo at both ends of the floor.”Says White: “I think we’re still trying to figure out our roles on this team, where people in previous years just kind of knew. We’re trying to find our identity … but I know we’re going to have to play a lot harder this year, and a lot faster.”This much is certain: While some of the old guard remains in the form of the well-known senior trio of Brown, White and Ijames, Drury fans will need to become familiar with some new names and faces in key roles for 2008-09.“I think we’ve got a good mixture of old guys and new guys,” Brown says. “There’s a lot of skill and talent in that (young) group. If they buy in, they’ve got a chance to be really good.”“The young guys have a chance to be good players, but the proof is somewhere in the future,” Hesser says. “They’re all going to get an opportunity.”

The 2007-08 edition of the Drury basketball Panthers will go down in history as the first DU squad to win a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship.The Panthers set the stage for a strong conference run with a 7-1 start through their non-conference sched-ule, including a 92-82, come-from-behind victory at home over a very talented Southwest Baptist squad that would go on to the NCAA-II Tournament as well. Drury finished 28-4 overall, including a 15-4 mark in GLVC play to win the West for a second time in three seasons as a league member. Then came a memorable home run for the GLVC Tournament at Weiser – where the Panthers wound up 17-1 on the season – as Drury swept through Belllarmine and Quincy in the first two rounds to set up a clas-sic showdown with a high-powered Lewis squad in the finals. With the automatic NCAA berth and the GLVC title on the line, Drury outlasted Lewis 89-87 in overtime, claiming the victory when Jamel Grant

tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer to send the pro-Panthers crowd into a flood on the court in celebra-tion. Chris Ijames scored a career-high 28 points in the win and Tim Brown played flawless at the point, with eight assists and no turnovers in 44 minutes, to join senior standout Collins Harris (26 points) on the All-Tourney team.The Panthers reached the NCAA-II Tournament for a third straight year, but fell 73-56 to a red-hot shooting Gannon team in the opening round, a defeat that spelled the end of the collegiate careers for DU seniors Harris, Steven Gum and Deonte Cox.Harris, a three-time All-GLVC First Team selection, wound up as the sixth-leading scorer all-time in DU history with 1,910 points, while Gum finished 22nd on the scoring list with 1,205 points and second on the career 3-pointers made charts with 277. Cox, a one-year transfer from Missouri Southern, provided depth for the Panthers off the bench.

The 13-member Great Lakes Valley Conference has made its name throughout the last 30 years as a power in NCAA Division II basketball. In the last few years, however, the GLVC has seen success in many sports, and the league can now claim itself as one of the nation’s top in all NCAA Division II athletics.

The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC.

Since formulation of the conference, 11 schools have joined the league: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994), University of

Missouri-St. Louis (1995), Drury (2005), Missouri-Rolla (2005), and Rockhurst (2005). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season, while IPFW left the league following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville exited the league following the 2007-08 season.

Along with its expansion came the hiring of the league’s first full-time commissioner in 1996. In 2001, an associate commissioner was added to the full-time conference staff, and a full-time sports information director joined in 2006. The conference headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis.

The GLVC can claim schools in many of the Midwest’s major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst) and St. Louis (UM-St. Louis).

The conference sponsors 17 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross

country, softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball for women. The GLVC sponsors more women’s golf teams that any other Division II league in the country and has seen success on a national level in every sponsored sport.

GLVC institutions have won 11 national championships in basketball. Kentucky Wesleyan leads all Division II institutions with eight men’s basketball titles, while Southern Indiana won the men’s crown in 1995 and finished as the runner-up in the 2004 tournament. Northern Kentucky’s women won the school’s first-ever basketball national championship in 2000 and followed with a national title in 2008. In addition, SIU Edwardsville became the first GLVC school to win a national championship in softball in 2007.

In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002. The GLVC annually presents the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award to the top male and female student-athlete in the league, and the Bertram Award to a distinguished alum who both succeeded while a GLVC student-athlete and excelled in accomplishments after graduation.

the steve hesser raDio show anD BasketBall lunCheonsContinuing a long-standing tradition, Drury Basketball will once again keep its fansupdated on a weekly basis through the bi-weekly Steve Hesser Radio Show and theDrury Basketball Luncheons. The radio shows this season will be held on mostly Tuesday nights at a new home, the Rivals Casual Grille sports-themed restaurant located on South Glenstone Ave. in Springfield. The one-hour segments typically include Coach Hesser’s recap of past games along with previews of the upcoming schedule, with occasional interviews with the Panthers and their assistant coaches. Fans again are invited to come out and support the program during the show, enjoying dinner in the new “Press Box” section upstairs at Rivals with Coach Hesser and show hosts Tom Ladd and Mike Edwards. Coach Hesser’s bi-weekly luncheons this season have a new home as well – the fine Doe’s Eat Place establishment located near the intersection of E. Trafficway and National, just down the street from Hammons Field in central Springfield. The luncheons begin at 11:30 a.m. and also feature reviews of past games and previews of upcoming contests from Hesser, a chance to ask the coach a few questions and also to meet selected players throughout the winter. The 1978-79 Drury Panthers exemplified the concept of “team chemistry” from the first game of the season, a 120-86 thumping of Baker University on Nov. 21, 1978 in Weiser Gym, to the national championship game, a 60-54 win over Henderson State University played on March 17 in Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. And each year since that championship season, discussions have revolved around who was the most important cog of that 1979 championship machine. Quite simply, the consensus has been that if any piece was missing, the ‘79 team would have never finished 33-2 and won the NAIA national title. Take a quick look at the starting team that Panther head coach Jerry Kirksey put on the floor every night: a “Fab Five” that has set the standard to which every Drury team since has been compared. Jerry Alexander and Nate Quinn, the “Boley (Okla.) Connection” that brought so much success and excitement to the program

for four years; James Bone, the silent enforcer from Tennessee who was called with good reason “the chairman of the boards”; and, a pair of transfers, Lawrence Washington and Mike Carter, who helped the 1977-78 Panthers earn a #1 national ranking, a 29-4 record and a quarterfinal finish at the ‘78 NAIA national tournament...and who helped set the stage for 1978-79. All five starters averaged in double figures that year: Alexander (16.3 ppg.), Quinn (15.1 ppg.), Bone (13.9 ppg.), Washington and Carter (12.9 ppg.). Lady Luck also followed the 1979 team with all five starters avoiding major injuries. But a talented support cast was there whenever called upon. Kevin Weems, Doug Jones, Don Vincent and Charlie Penn formed a solid support force for the frontline while Kent Russell, Curtis Hargus, Eric Hall and Randy Swearengin provided depth in the backcourt. Anyway you look at it, 1978-79 was a memorable season and the five games played on five consecutive March nights at Kansas

City’s Kemper Arena provided the Panther faithful, the city of Springfield and all of southwest Missouri an excitement that may never be surpassed. Whether it was national tournament MVP Washington’s 15 rebounds in the title game, national tournament Hustle Award Winner and towel-waving Carter’s overall effort, All-American Alexander’s spectacular 31-point performance in the Panthers’ 89-84 quarterfinal win over Briar Cliff, All-American Bone’s 20-point performance the next night in Drury’s victory over Midwestern State, or All-American Nate Quinn’s steady play, timely scoring and overall poise....the fact remains that the 1978-79 Drury basketball Panthers brought an energy to the Drury campus and an excitement to southwest Missouri that will continue to endure. - Dan Cashel, Drury assistant athletic director, compliance director and former SID

As the first institution of higher education in southwestern Missouri, Drury holds a unique place in the Springfield community. Beginning with its founding in 1873 by a group of Congregationalists, Drury has welcomed a diverse student body, offering unusual opportunity for its time to women and American Indians. Drury university athletiC faCilities

When it comes to available athletic facilities, Drury’s student-athletes can take pride in knowing they play and practice in and on some of the best in the nation on the NCAA Division II level.That claim will only get stronger with the proposed addition of the $16 million O’Reilly Family Event Center, with final fund-raising efforts near completion and construction to begin soon on the state-of-the-art, 3,200-seat facility expected to begin in early 2009. The OFEC will serve as the home for both the tradition-rich Drury men’s and women’s basketball programs as well as Panthers volleyball, joining a long list of quality venues the DU squads call home. That includes the refurbished Meador Park and Thompson Field facilities in south Springfield for Drury baseball and softball, respectively; the fine Harrison Stadium artificially-turf facility that is home to the Drury soccer squads; and, of course, historic Weiser Gym, the current, 2,200-seat home of the Panther basketball and volleyball programs.

Adjacent to Weiser Gym is the Hutchens Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center which houses the Breech Pool, home of the perennial national champion Drury men’s and women’s swimming and diving squads, as well as Mabee Gym, a varsity practice and student recreational facility. Drury’s highly competitive men’s and women’s golf teams also benefit from practicing and playing on some of the best courses in the Midwest, including Highland Springs Country Club, site of the annual Nationwide Tour stop in Springfield, as well as Hickory Hills Country Club, Twin Oaks Country Club, Millwood Golf and Racquet Club and the Rivercut Golf Course, the latter one of the top public courses in America.

The highly successful Panthers tennis squads both call the fabulous Cooper Tennis Complex home. The award-winning facility features 12 indoor courts as well as a plethora of outdoor surfaces, including a stadium court that serves as home for the Springfield Lasers of World Team Tennis.

Drury athletes stay in playing shape by working out at the Barber Fitness

Center, a state-of-the-art weight room and fitness facility located just off of Weiser Gym and made possible several years ago by the generous donation from Sharon Barber, a long-time Drury athletics booster. Members of the Drury baseball and softball teams as well as the golf squads also take advantage of the Tindle Mills facility, an indoor training area complete with batting cages, weight room with exercise equipment, and plenty of space for the players to get their workouts in when weather forces them indoors.

When injuries unfortunately do call, the athletes from Drury’s 17 intercollegiate sports squads receive training help in the Hutchens HPER from full-time certified head athletic trainer Erin Kineman as well as assistants Summer Stewart and Jeff Paden and a host of student assistants.

The Panthers’ team physicians are Drs. Michael Hartman and Ryan Snyder, orthopedic specialists with the Bone and Joint Center of the Cox Medical Centers system. Together, the Drury training team helps to ensure that the 270-plus athletes on campus receive the best possible care in terms of athletic injury prevention and rehabilitation. Like the DU basketball and volleyball squads, the training staff will move to the OFEC when available for a spacious, modernized rehabilitation and training center.




Drury BasketBall anD the meDiaIn a manner befitting their status as one of the top NCAA Division II basketball programs in the country, the Drury Panthers enjoy a level of media coverage unlike most college teams at their level. Drury’s games and player features appear on a regular basis in The Springfield News-Leader, a daily newspaper with circulation figures of more than 65,000 weekdays and approaching 100,000 on weekends. The Panthers also are fortunate to have their scores, highlights and features shown after all home games on all four Springfield television stations – KYTV (NBC), KOLR (CBS), KSFX (Fox) and KSPR (ABC), where the sports directors of each station can be found on a regular basis witnessing the action at Weiser Gym.In addition, the Panthers have continuedtheir annual relationship with KY-3 andits sister station, The Ozarks’ CW, tocarry two live live televised games again thisseason – the January 2 showdown with Quincy and the February 14 contest against Missouri Science and Technology. Hall-of-Fame sportscaster Ned Reynoldswill once again be on the play-by-play dutieswith his long-time trusty sidekick, Tom Mast, providing the color commentary as Drury continues to be one of the few D-II programs in the country to feature live, local telecasts.The Drury radio team for 2008-09 – with all games once again carried on the 100,000-watt signal of the Ozarks’ sports giant, JOCK 98.7 FM - will be a tag-team of familiar faces and voices to listeners throughout the Ozarks.

Returning to the microphone for his second season of calling the action for the Panthers and Lady Panthers is veteran Tom Ladd, but with a twist – his new radio partner is long-time local radio personality and a former Panther broadcaster who

returns to the booth, Mike Edwards.Edwards, host of the new “Edwards A.M. In The Afternoon” program on The JOCK, was once the Drury radio announcer before switching to public address duties for Lady Panther home games. Now he’s back

behind the mic with Ladd, providing Drury a tremendous setup with two of the veteran voices of local sports calling all of the action. They will also team throughout the year to host the “Drury Panthers Basketball Show” live from its new home, Rivals Casual Grille, in south Springfield. The weekly program alternates with a Panthers/Lady Panthers theme throughout the season and includes insight from coaches Steve Hesser and Steve Harold as well as player interviews.The Drury athletic programs continue to enjoy one of the top athletic websites in the country at www.drurypanthers .com, courtesy of the New York-based Internet Consult Service. The site features such technological luxuries as live, in-game statistics, score updates sent via text message to cell phones, podcasts
