Drugs are substances, other than food, that change the structure or function of the body or mind.

Some drugs need a prescription or are available Over the Counter (OTC).

Drugs

Medicines are drugs that are used to treat or prevent diseases and other conditions.

Examples: Vaccines, antibiotics, aspirin, etc.

Why drugs are taken?

Drug use is the term for taking a drug correctly, following instructions for dose, time, etc..

Drug misuse: is using a drug, such as a prescription drug for its unintended purpose. Example would be taking ADD medication for weight loss or for “chemical” energy.

Drug Abuse: Occurs when an individual needs to take more and more of a drug to achieve the benefit they received while first misusing the chemical.

Synergism- Multiplier effect; taking of two or more drugs to get greater effect.

Antagonistic- taking of two or more drugs to reduce or cancel out the effects of the drugs.

Side effects- reaction to a drug that is other than person intended.

Withdrawal: The bodies response to the addicted person not using the drug; includes headaches, dizziness, vomiting, flu symptoms, and delirium tremors.
