2. ITEP / Mapping (Two day course)

Aims:

• To explore the concept, principles, and benefits of ITEP. • To enable an understanding on how techniques can be applied to improve interventions with

clients with drug & alcohol problems.• To understand ‘Node-Link Mapping’ is a cognitive approach which encourages clearer and

more systematic thinking and can be an effective tool in support sessions to help maintain focus, support behaviour change, and address unhelpful thought-processes.

• To enable an understanding that this is thought to be particularly useful when working with new clients, difficult to engage clients, and clients who have been ‘stuck’ in the treatment system for some time.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

3. Focus Solution Training (One day course)

Aims:

• To gain a better understanding on how these approaches provide practitioners with an introduction into how to help strengthen and an individual's motivation for, and movement toward a specific goal (for instance engaging in child protection work, engaging in work-focussed activity, reducing offending, adopting healthy eating practices etc.) by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.

4. Mindfulness - The Third Wave of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Aims:

• To understand Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) gets its name from one of its coremessages 'Accept what is out of your personal control, and commit to action that improves and enriches your life'.

8. Managing Difficult & Aggressive Situations (One day course)

Aims:

• To understand that within social care work, we are likely to need to deal effectively and professionally with people who are difficult, aggressive and potentially violent.

• To cover the basic considerations and skills required to handle such situations confidently andsafely.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Demonstrate effective communication that shows respect and reduces abusive/aggressive behaviour.

2. Recognise and know how to appropriately deal with triggers to abusive/aggressive behaviour,protect the individual, self and others and defuse the situation.

3. Have a better understanding on the importance of constructively reviewing incidents of abusive/aggressive behaviour by all involved including managing own feelings and behaviour.

Aims:

• To stimulate thinking and discussion around mental health.• Participants will build on their existing knowledge and skills as well as exploring alternative

10. Dual diagnosis (Two day course)

Aims:

• To gain an understanding that dual diagnosis is generally viewed as a difficult presentation to treat.

• To understand that frequently the patient may be resistant to the idea of illness, disillusionedwith conventional medication, and resigned to 'self-medicating'.

• To understand those other times, such patients simply cannot see there is a problem. • To know how to bring effective help in such a situation is a very skilled task.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Investigate situations sufficiently to allow them to make reason able judgements about whether individuals are demonstrating behaviour(s) consistent with psychoactive substancesand/or co-existing mental health problems.

2. Understand they can obtain specialist assistance where they feel unable to make reasonablejudgements about whether individuals are demonstrating behaviour(s) consistent with psychoactive substances and/or co-existing problems.

3. Respond promptly to individuals presenting for substance misuse services by using appropriate techniques and procedures in order to maintain the individual’s motivation to engage in treatment.

4. Assess any immediate risk to the individual and to others, which may result from substance misuse and/or co-existent mental health problems.

5. Have gained a better understanding of the information about situations and actions taken only to those entitled to have it.

6. Screen for drug use, alcohol use, psychological problems, physical problems, social problemsand legal problems

7. Have the appropriate knowledge and expertise to be able to make reasonable judgements andinvolve appropriate agencies when individuals are demonstrating behaviour(s) consistent withpsychoactive substance misuse and/or co-existing mental problems.

8. Establish objectives and options for meeting with individuals, carers and other relevant workers.9. Evaluate the suitability of options for meeting the individual’s identified needs and

maximising existing resources.10. Acknowledge the constraints affecting the individual and others in the process.

12. Risk management (One day course)

Aims:

• To understand that risk assessment and support planning are increasingly important aspectsof the work undertaken with our client group.

• To understand this one-day course will introduce them to the key elements involved in undertaking responsive needs assessment and support planning with the principle aim of improving client outcomes.

• To provide an overview of client motivation and empowerment, explore relevant models of change, and will introduce some useful tools for supporting and measuring change.

• To engage clients in these processes, ensuring clients views are at the heart of needs assessment and support planning.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the role of risk assessment.2. Identify factors that indicate whether a service user or someone associated with them is at

risk.3. Have more awareness that the environment in which the session takes place is safe for both

the worker and the service user.4. Agree parameters of confidentiality for the risk assessment process - in line with

Aims:

• Understand the dynamics that can exist between workers and clients, how workers can ensure that this initial session is as productive as possible and how to complete required paperwork as painlessly as possible.

15. Abstinence and Integrated Recovery (One day course)

Aims:

• Understand that contemporary drug treatment is now characterised by a focus on abstinencein recovery and using the Integrated Recovery effectively.

• Gain an enhanced understanding on how to strengthen an individual’s motivation for, and movement toward, specific recovery goals by eliciting and exploring the individual’s own reasons for change.

• Participants will consider some of the key issues in recovery and abstinence orientated treatment including the integration of interventions to improve and enhance effective outcomes. This process is integral to the treatment journey, from initial assessment and care planning through to reviews and abstinence support strategies.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Advisory & Development ServiceWe believe in working creatively with individuals, communities and policy makers to reduce the harmcaused by problem alcohol and drug use. The 2010 National Drug Strategy states that, “The goal of alltreatment is for drug users to achieve abstinence from their drug/drugs dependency”. In order to deliver against all the treatment system actions in the drug strategy, partnerships will recognize theneed to have recovery as the bedrock of all commissioning decisions.
