ABOUT THEIR EDUCATIONRome had a very

different education system. Back in ancient Rome, there was really no god or goddess of education, but the one that would fit the best would probably be Minerva, the roman goddess of wisdom. Ancient Rome had a very different style of teaching then we do today. There are many differences in everything from what they wrote with to who could go to school. Back then, school was usually for rich families and for boys. Today you will learn about the education of ancient Rome.

HOW THEY LEARNED

Girls usually were taught how to take care of the house by their mother. Education in

Rome was taken very seriously. School started at the age of seven. School at that age was called ludus. Before that, ether the father or slave would tutor the child. Schools used discipline to effectively teach their students. At the age of 15, they moved on to rhetoric, or secondary school. The rich could even go on to a higher level of school, it was like college.

Tutors were a big part of the educational value of the students. Tutors for students were called paedogogus’s.

Tutors were usually slaves or freedman, as long as the tutor has had proper education, they could teach. The students were walked to school by their tutors and the tutors were the eyes of the education for the father of the student. Students would be

punished when the tutor said that they were bad at school.

WHERE THEY LEARNED

Schools isn’t the right word. “Schools” back in Rome were usually located in the market place. A curtain was the only wall that separated the “of the people in the market or forum. Not only the location and the value are different, also the smaller things, such as how they wrote. Students used styluses an ancient pencil and clay tablets, or broken parts of the pottery and only the best writers were allowed to use paper. Schools were very different from back then.

ABOUT THEIR SCHOOLS Classes were

generally small and the teacher was always a generally an educated man, and class was all day. And school was long, and there wasn’t any

weekend, school and work nonstop. But the good thing was that they got a break, there were so many religious holidays, that it was like they had a weekend. WHAT THEY LEARNED

Back in Rome, there were many subjects that we do not have in school today, such as public speaking. Roman children were taught this school at the age of 14. And in school, they were usually taught how to play an instrument. Some subjects that we have today that Romans didn’t have were science, probably due to the facts that they believed that everything was controlled by the gods, art, and Physical education which is confusing because Romans wanted their children to be athletic and fit, Rome is very different from now a days.

Rome was very different from what the world is like now, but maybe it is for the better.
