Introduction• A systematic disaster management mechanism and legal framework was introduced

• In the aftermath of Indian Ocean Tsunami in 2004.

• A Parliament Select Committee (PSC) was appointed in 2005

• To identify legal and institutional framework for disaster management.

• The Disaster Management Act No 13 of 2005 enacted.

• To provide legislative provisions for disaster management.

• National Council for Disaster Management (NCDM) and Disaster Management Center (DMC) were established in

2005.

• To implement the Disaster Management Act.

• Meteorological Dept., National Building Research Organization and the National Disaster Relief Services Center

(NDRSC) were attached to the Ministry in 2006, 2007 and 2010, respectively.

• To operate the disaster management activities under one organization.

• National Disaster Management Policy and Plan was formulated and approved by the Cabinet of Ministers in 2014

• To guide the operations of disaster management activities in a systematic way.

• Sri Lanka Comprehensive Disaster Management Program was formulated and approved by the Cabinet of Ministers

in 2014

• To implement and mainstream Disaster Management Policy and Plan.

• National Emergency Operation Plan in 2017

To manage emergency situation and reduce the impact
