As an equipment manufacturer, Thales has developed mature core technologies and acquired in-depth functional expertise. The company’s strength lies in the ability to offer both civil and military customers a full range of equipment, subsystems and systems.

Thales draws on a broad vision of operational requirements as a basis for developing comprehensive solutions that are both innovative and competitively priced.

Drawing on this range of capabilities, Thales partners with its customers as a lead systems integrator or first-tier supplier.

Enhancing the passenger experience

Thales’s TopSeries®® family of in-flight entertainment systems (IFE) brings innovation right to the passenger’s seat, through integrated entertainment and communications solutions, and connectivity with personal electronic devices.

Thanks to their widely proven performance and reliability, Thales IFE systems are now a feature in the cabins of commercial airliners worldwide, the most recent being the Airbus A380 and Boeing 787

very large aircraft. But their light weight and reduced cost also make them suited to single-aisle and regional aircraft.

These systems are set to play a pivotal role in the current evolution of technologies driving the exchange of data inside aircraft, especially between the cockpit and cabin.

Thales’s new I-MASTER is an ultra-light, high-performance surveillance radar combining synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and ground moving target indicator (GMTI) capabilities.

Achieving an optimum balance between capability, cost, weight and power consumption, the I-MASTER is designed for a broad range of UAVs, helicopters and light aircraft.

The radar offers an all-weather capability for greater mission effectiveness and delivers high-quality imagery even through cloud and smoke.• Lightweight (30 kg)• 360° coverage• Innovative stabilised antenna• Ability to detect moving vehicles and infantry at a range of up to 20 km• Multichannel processing

In-flight innovation

Thales’s high-tech IFE systems have paved the way for the burgeoning in-flight services now on offer from airlines. In the very near future, passengers will be able to communicate with the outside world during their flight, from the comfort of their seat.Services will include GSM telephony, satellite TV and Wi-Fi Internet connectivity for reception of online TV.

Thales’s large-scale Battlespace Transformation Centre (BTC) provides a new type of environment for designing and validating system architectures for armed forces. Working with customers in the BTC, Thales leverages the latest simulation technologies to develop effective responses to specific operational needs and deployment concepts, and to assess future system performance under realistic conditions.

Diehl aerospace pushing the innovation envelopeCabin lighting

Today, cabin lighting is an important element in aircraft. While the initial objective is of course to enhance passengers’ comfort and well-being, the usual power consumption and weight constraints inherent to the aviation industry also have to be factored in.Diehl Aerospace, a joint venture of Diehl and Thales, is the market leader in this sector and a first-tier supplier of cabin lighting for new very large aircraft and regional transport aircraft. Cabin lighting is one of its domains of excellence, along with flight and engine controls, avionics and cabin systems.

7

The A380 is the first Airbus airliner fitted with the Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) suite, developed with Diehl Aerospace. The IMA is a leap-ahead technological innovation, with all onboard computing modules networked and able to support different applications. The result is a substantial improvement in computing power, reliability, maintainability, volume, weight and scalability.
