CHAPTER FOUR
Traf c Signs and Signalsraf c signs control traf c ow, making streets and highways sa er or
drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Tese signs, which are posted by the IndianaDepartment o ransportation and local governments, use colors, shapes, writtenmessages, and symbols to help drivers quickly understand the in ormation.Understanding these signs is necessary to obtain an Indiana drivers license.

displayed on the sign. Tere are seven common colors used or signs.
Red Traf c Signs
Red traf c signs require drivers to take immediateactions to avoid threats to traf c sa ety. A Wrong Way
sign is an example o a traf c sign with a red background.
Yellow or Fluorescent Yel low -GreenTraf c Signs
Yellow or uorescent green traf c signs preparedrivers or speci c road conditions and hazards ahead,and alert drivers to nearby school zones.

Eight-sided traf c signs warn drivers to stop and yield the appropriate right-o -way at an intersection.

I you are approaching a stop sign, you must stop at the solid white stopline. I there is no stop line, you should stop parallel to the stop sign or be oreentering the intersection.
Approac hing a Yield Sign
A yield sign indicates that a driver must slow down when approachingan intersection and be prepared to come to a complete stop i a vehicle orpedestrian with the right-o -way is approaching rom another direction. I
you are approaching a yield sign, a vehicle approaching rom another direction with the right-o -way should not have to brake to avoid a collision with you.

I you are approaching an intersection with a non-operating signal, youshould stop be ore entering the intersection. A ter stopping, you should yieldthe right-o -way to cross-traf c and then proceed with caution.
Be ore entering a street rom an alley or driveway, you should stop and yield the right-o -way to other vehicles.

when pedestrians may sa ely cross a street or intersection. At some intersections,there is a button near the base o the pedestrian signal or stop sign that may bepushed to activate the walk signal.
