    CHAPTER FOUR

    Traf c Signs and Signalsraf c signs control traf c ow, making streets and highways sa er or

    drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Tese signs, which are posted by the IndianaDepartment o ransportation and local governments, use colors, shapes, writtenmessages, and symbols to help drivers quickly understand the in ormation.Understanding these signs is necessary to obtain an Indiana drivers license.

    Traf c Sign Colors Te background color o a traf c sign helps to identi y the type o in ormation

    displayed on the sign. Tere are seven common colors used or signs.

    Red Traf c Signs

    Red traf c signs require drivers to take immediateactions to avoid threats to traf c sa ety. A Wrong Way

    sign is an example o a traf c sign with a red background.

    Yellow or Fluorescent Yel low -GreenTraf c Signs

    Yellow or uorescent green traf c signs preparedrivers or speci c road conditions and hazards ahead,and alert drivers to nearby school zones.

    Orange Traf c Signs

    Orange traf c signs warn drivers o conditionsahead due to highway construction and maintenance

    projects. A Flagger Ahead sign is an example o atraf c sign with an orange background.

    Green Traf c Signs

    Green traf c signs indicate directions, highway entrances and exits, and distance to upcoming destinations.

    Pennant-Shaped Traf c Signs

    Pennant-shaped traf c signs are posted on thele t-hand side o two-way roads to warn driversnot to pass other vehicles on the le t.

    Square Traf c Signs

    Square traf c signs display regulations thatdrivers must obey. Signs that warn drivers toavoid certain actions will o ten have a symbolsurrounded by a red circle with a red diagonal bar.A No Le t urn sign is an example o a squaretraf c sign.

    Rectangular traf c signs display traf c regulationsthat drivers must obey such as speed limits, as well ashelp ul in ormation such as state highway markers.Rectangular signs are o ten posted with pennant-shapedsigns to warn drivers not to pass other vehicles, or topass other vehicles with care.     Diamond-Shaped Traf c Signs

    Diamond-shaped traf c signs warn drivers o upcoming road conditions and hazards. A DividedHighway Ends sign is an example o a diamond-shapedtraf c sign.

    Five-Sided Traf c Signs

    Five-sided traf c signs warn drivers that they areentering an area near a school in which children may be crossing the road.

    Eight-Sided Traf c Signs

    Eight-sided traf c signs warn drivers to stop and yield the appropriate right-o -way at an intersection.

    I you are approaching a stop sign, you must stop at the solid white stopline. I there is no stop line, you should stop parallel to the stop sign or be oreentering the intersection.

    Approac hing a Yield Sign

    A yield sign indicates that a driver must slow down when approachingan intersection and be prepared to come to a complete stop i a vehicle orpedestrian with the right-o -way is approaching rom another direction. I

    you are approaching a yield sign, a vehicle approaching rom another direction with the right-o -way should not have to brake to avoid a collision with you.

    I you are approaching an intersection with a non-operating signal, youshould stop be ore entering the intersection. A ter stopping, you should yieldthe right-o -way to cross-traf c and then proceed with caution.

    Be ore entering a street rom an alley or driveway, you should stop and yield the right-o -way to other vehicles.

    Pedestr ian SignalsPedestrian signals alert pedestrians when they may sa ely cross a street or

    intersection.Pedestrian signals display the word WALK or a symbol o a person walking

    when pedestrians may sa ely cross a street or intersection. At some intersections,there is a button near the base o the pedestrian signal or stop sign that may bepushed to activate the walk signal.

    Pedestrian signals display the words DON WALK or a symbol o araised hand when it is not sa e or pedestrians to cross a street or intersection. Te words or symbol ash to alert pedestrians that the time in which to sa ely cross the street or intersection is ending.
