A fter all the hard work it takes to show livestock it would be nice to make the long hours and level of responsibility pay off – in the form of a paid job.

Listing livestock show skills on a résumé isn’t an easy thing to do. The people who have experience showing cattle, sheep, hogs and meat goats would totally understand what it means to read, “Grand Champion” on a piece of paper but an employer without show ring experience might think otherwise.

Start by making a quick list of the qualifications you’ve earned in the show ring. Be sure to emphasize and describe the skills you’ve earned in the show ring so you can apply them to the position you hope to win.

Mary Ellen Barkley is the assistant director and liaison to the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Career & Employment Services at Kansas State University and showed livestock when she was younger. She says it’s tempting to simply list the shows you’ve participated in and your placings on a résumé. However, if an applicant wants to showcase the skills they’ve gained, well-written descriptions are important.

As an example, Barkley says if an exhibitor wants to demonstrate financial savvy and attention to detail, a sample description might read like this, “Handled all financial aspects of raising show steers including purchase and sale of animals, tracking of feed and veterinary expenses; resulting in profit of $1,000.”

Be sure to write in short phrases and lead each of your descriptions with an action verb. An example of showcasing livestock judging experience could include, “Demonstrated ability to make presentations with confidence while providing reasons in multiple contests.”

Whitney Kinne, assistant director of career services with the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University

of Missouri, says the actual descriptive text can vary based on the experience the exhibitor or judge has gained. While there are many parallels from one person’s experience to the next, Kinne says the point of a résumé is to stand out as an individual.

“Think of it as a fitting job,” she says. “You want your résumé to be in tip-top shape to attract the eye of the employer, just like you want your animal to be fitted in a way that stands out and wows the judge in the show ring.”

There are certainly words that paint a more powerful statement than others. Kinne shares this list of action words the University of Missouri share with students to consider for their resumes: hiremizzoutigers.com/pdfs/ResumeActionVerbsandAdverbs.pdf. Not all of these words, she says, will be accurate for each person’s experience but can be considered ideas to help communicate in a more powerful and articulate way.

Kinne is also adamant to tell exhibitors not to forget about opportunities outside the show ring. Many of today’s livestock show youth gain transferable skills from elected and volunteer positions they hold in breed and youth organizations. Be sure to incorporate these experiences on your résumé.

“Experience is the top attribute employers want to see on a candidate’s résumé,” she says. “Be sure you’re putting enough emphasis in building valuable experience so your résumé can reflect you as a well-rounded and qualified candidate.”

While there are vital pieces of information that must be included there are also details that should not show up on a résumé. Barkley says to avoid irrelevant details. Rather than a lengthy list shows and placings, pick the most significant awards and don’t include everything. Sometimes, she says, a summary of placings is also appropriate.

Another critical thing is to spell all words correctly on a résumé. Proofreading is a must because spelling and mechanical errors are criteria employers use heavily to screen candidates.

“Don’t let an employer dock you before they’ve even meet you,” Kinne says.

Barkley adds that in addition to spell check, be sure to have a real, knowledgeable person proofread your résumé.

Kinne says just as a judge will have different criteria for a heifer than a steer, a company hiring for a sales role will seek different criteria than what they seek when hiring for technical support roles. To work through these details start by researching the company. Kinne says she often sees resumes that are too generic so it’s critical to focus content on transferable skills that apply to a specific role.

“Your résumé should make you stand out,” she says. “Writing a résumé with the goal of quantifying and qualifying your experiences will help. For example, if a job seeker lists they are responsible for the health and comfort of a string of show animals, I will ask some questions to get a more specific picture of the quantity and quality of their work experience.”

Questions related to caring for a show animal might include how many animals does the person care for, what is being done in terms of care and how successful has the effort been. Also, has the job

seeker would ask about improvements in the outcome since they exhibitor has been in charge.

From these questions, Kinne says she can find important details that might have been otherwise glossed over in a generic, cookie-cutter way. Another thing to note is that many résumés are cluttered with unrelated details. Only include relevant content and write your résumé accordingly.

The bottom line to successful livestock show details on a résumé is to link your show ring skills in a relevant, descriptive, succinct way. Reviewing job descriptions in advance can help younger exhibitors understand what qualifications and criteria employers will likely seek for future positions. Show men and women who include their leadership experience in addition to show ring awards will also earn a few extra points from the potential employer. Spell everything correctly just as you would fit the heifer or steer to a tee and emphasize your strong points like you would when bracing a lamb or walking a pig in front of the judge.

“Even though minds of judges and employers may often change, keep working to develop transferable professional skills from the show ring to the job world,” Kinne says.

It’s tempting to simply list the shows you’ve participated in and your placings on a résumé. However, if an applicant wants to showcase the skills they’ve gained, well-written descriptions are important.

If you’ve ever wondered how many hours it takes to drive somewhere in Texas, ask an ag teacher.

Working as an ag ed teacher and FFA adviser in Texas is time-consuming. Not only does the state boast more than 81,000 FFA members and 254 counties but its stock show season is the most competitive and rigorous in the country.

Once the Texas show season hits in January, students and exhibitors work tirelessly to prepare animals for show ring. And the support people who work behind the scenes – parents and ag advisors – are seasoned and wise. The level of commitment from an ag teacher is second to none. These folks spend countless hours away from their own family and communities to drive, set up, fit, tear down then drive to the next show.

For an FFA instructor like Ardy Tiner, it’s nothing to spend nearly 50 days out of the year away from home. His commitment always includes weekends and spring break, the time frame people in a “normal” job would get to spend with their immediate family.

Tiner is a teacher at Industrial FFA, located in south Texas, and every fall and spring he takes his students to all of the major shows in Texas. Industrial FFA students exhibit at the State Fair and in the spring they attend stock shows in Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston, Austin and Mercedes. In addition to the major shows Tiner brings students to the Jackson County Fair in October as well as Victoria County Fair in February.

The busiest season for many Texas ag teachers is January through March. Tiner says the hours he and others put in are countless, from early morning practices to late nights spent clipping animals or sitting in fair board meetings. These activities happen after an already full-day of teaching and keeping up with paperwork. Tiner also gives up several days of Christmas vacation to check each student’s animal projects.

Why go to all this trouble and effort? Who would want to spend that kind of time on the road and away from their wife and children? To be clear, Tiner is not whining about the amount of time on the road. He is thankful for the role he plays in young people’s lives.

“I love seeing the student’s faces when they win an award or show. Those are priceless moments no one can take from you. I knew going into it that I would never make millions but the feeling that I get from helping people learn and be successful is worth more than any amount of money in the bank. I am also a person that can’t stand to get beat so this is the one job that allows me to be successful and teach the future of tomorrow.”

Since Tiner joined the Industrial FFA program its membership has doubled. They currently feed 150 animal projects each year for county and major shows and went from three exhibitors at the major shows to roughly 25 per year. Industrial FFA students are so active the school brought in a second teacher, after 72 years with just one.

And they have the accolades to make it worth it. In the first three years of teaching, Tiner’s students showed a Grand or Reserve heifer

at every major show in the Texas. This past year one of his students showed a Simbrah that won Reserve Grand steer at Rodeo Austin, recognition that has only been accomplished twice before with an American steer. Aside from the major show circuit Tiner’s students have also been successful at the national level, winning numerous scholarships to help pay for their college careers.

Tiner is one of many ag teaches who take on the challenge of preparing kids for shows and contests just to help students ensure a bright future. Besides an athletic coach, there aren’t many high school teachers who spend their extra hours with students.

He says his wife, Brandi, is very understanding and knows his job requires extra hours and time on the road. The couple just had their first child, a girl named Kinley, and Tiner will make a special trip home from the Houston Livestock Show just in time for her first birthday.

“Being gone weeks at a time will be tough but with technology I will be able to Skype and visit on a daily basis,” he says. “Brandi and I live several hours from either of our parents so that makes it a little tougher. We both put our marriage and family values at the top of the list and that has helped me to do my job to the fullest.”

In addition to showing livestock, FFA instructors send kids to leadership development training, prepare for Career Development Events, train for judging teams and supervise animal projects. And let’s not forget about teaching lessons at school. Ag ed instructors offer several certification courses that fall under the National Center

for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) umbrella. Tiner says these courses certify students in a core safety class as well as a Welding 1 certification, which is can mean getting a well-paid. The Industrial FFA is located in the Gulf Coast region of the country and Tiner says manufacturing plants look for FFA students from the area with the right certifications.

Though he’s turned down other offers there won’t be a career change for Tiner. He says he hopes to be an ag teacher until retirement because being passionate about your job means everything.

And while driving the show road can long and weary, Tiner justifies being away from his family by making the hours pay off. He was rewarded a few years ago when some of his students and their families gave him a pair of Italian lamb skin boots made in Canada. He wears them with pride, remembering the time and effort put into those students and their projects.

He encourages FFA members to enjoy every opportunity because they never know who is watching them work hard in the show ring.

“Showing livestock not only allows a student to meet lots of people that can help them down the road, but it teaches them leadership skills that can help them in the future” Tiner says. “I’ve made lifelong friends throughout the country just from showing and that has helped me get farther as an ag teacher due to those connection I made earlier in life.”
