Ferraz Shawmut is committed to the introduction of new and innovativeproducts. Products that are focused at the end-user, providing the end-userwith time and cost savings, and optimal protection. The Drive ProtectionModule combines Ferraz Shawmut manufactured components applied inthe power wiring installation stage.

CodesNEC and UL Standards define

required drive installation methods.

Drive Manufacturer’s are leaving

the responsiblity of meeting these

installation standards and drive

protection in the hands of the installer.

NEC – Article 409New in 2005!

Industrial Control Panels409.1 Scope. This article coversindustrial control panels intended forgeneral use and operating at 600volts or less.

FPN: UL 508A is a safety standardfor industrial control panels.

409.110 Marking. An industrialcontrol panel shall be marked withthe following information that isplainly visible after installation:(3) Short circuit current rating ofthe industrial control panel based onone of the following:A. Short circuit current rating of alisted and labeled assemblyB. Short circuit current rating estab-lished utilizing an approved methodFPN: UL 508A-2001, Supplement SB,is an example of an approvedmethod.

Meaning: This ties UL 508A and itssupplements into the NEC and thesubsequent SCCR ratings for panels.

UL 508A

SB5.1.1 Effective April 25, 2006, UL508A approved panels will berequired to include on its nameplaterating of industrial control panels itsShort Circuit Current Rating (SCCR)

Determination of a panel’s SCCR rat-ing is achieved by listing all of theindividual component’s ratings andselecting the lowest value. Valuesnot listed on a component defer toassumed values defined in TableSB4.1.

Table SB4.2 defines peak letthrough currents, Ip, and clearing ,I2t, for Class CC, G, J, T, L, RK1 andRK5 fuses at 50, 100 and 200kA.

Key is using Class J fusible discon-nect switches and J fuses in feederand branch circuits in panels makingit easier to achieve 50, 100 or200kA ratings

1. AC Drive manufacturersdo not provide line sidebranch circuit or shortcircuit fuses. With bothtypes of protectionrequired, the HSJ has pro-vided an improved solutionto fusing drives.

2. The drive manufacturers do not providea disconnecting means.

3. In the case ofover-voltage, drivesare being protectedby very low qualitysurge devices.

4. High short circuit current ratings onpanels are not being addressed.
