The Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is an integrated water and hydro-electric power facility located in Australia’s Southern Alps. Recognised as a civil engineering wonder of the modern world, and the greatest engineering project undertaken in Australia, the Scheme is an Australian engineering and social achievement.

Construction of the Scheme began in 1949 and was completed in 1974. Seven major power stations (two underground), 16 major dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts, 145 kilometres of tunnels and a large pumping station were completed and still today, under the ownership and management of Snowy Hydro Limited, provide essential services to the National Electricity Market and it’s customers.

The Snowy Mountains Scheme

Snowy Hydro is the third largest generator by capacity and provides peak electricity and electricity insurance contracts to the National Electricity Market. The Company’s portfolio includes Snowy Mountains Scheme hydro generation assets, Victorian based gas-fired generation and the electricity retailer, Red Energy.

In addition to the electricity production, the other key objective in the design and construction of the Scheme was to mitigate the effects of drought on irrigated agriculture along the River Murray and Murrumbidgee River. Water is diverted from the Scheme for farmers on the Murray and Murrumbidgee River systems under a stringent Water Licence issued by the Government.

A visit to the Snowy Mountains Scheme is a must for those wanting to experience the best of the region. Snowy Hydro provides a range of facilities around the Snowy Mountains for people to see and experience the Scheme. Read on for more and we look forward to welcoming you!

Safety around the Scheme

Snowy Hydro moves water around the Scheme on a daily basis. Power demands in eastern Australia fluctuate daily. As a result, water flows in some rivers can change dramatically, especially for the Snowy River above Jindabyne Dam, the Tumut River and the Swampy Plains River.

Some of the changing conditions can occur in downstream rivers and reservoirs during and after electricity generation are:

+ Sudden and rapid changes in water flow and volume in streams and rivers

+ Potential bank collapse during and after high flow events

+ Floating debris

+ Water temperature can be very cold

+ Water level in lake or reservoir may change significantly in a short period of time

24

When visiting the Snowy Scheme, we ask you to be aware and be safe especially in areas near power stations, lake foreshores, release gates and rivers downstream from dams and power stations.

HYDRO WATER

ENVIRONMENT

Managing the impact of Snowy Hydro’s operations in unique environments is essential to our ongoing business success. Snowy Hydro does this through:

+ Well designed and maintained assets

+ Establishing and maintaining a robust environmental management system

+ The skills of our people and strong stakeholder relationships

+ Being responsible stewards of the land we operate

Construction started on the Snowy Mountains Scheme on 17 October 1949. Between 1949 (when the first blast was fired) and 1974 (when the physical works of the Scheme were completed). More than 100,000 men and women from more than 30 countries worked on the Scheme during that time.

Rain and snowmelt are captured in the Scheme’s lakes and reservoirs and then diverted through tunnels and pipelines down to power stations to generate clean, renewable energy hundreds of metres below. Hydro electricity does not pollute the atmosphere and produces no greenhouse gases.

Snowy Hydro captures, stores and diverts water under the stringent Snowy Water Licence. That water is then released into the Murray River and the Murrumbidgee River systems and underwrites $3 billion of agricultural produce.

How the NEM works and how Snowy Hydro helps power Australian homes when it’s needed most. The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) operates a wholesale market for trading electricity between the generators of electricity and the retailers of electricity within the NEM.

Talk to our staff at one of our 3 Visitor Centres or call 1800 623 776 to find out more.

DIRECT CONNECT

Snowy Hydro also owns Direct Connect - Australia’s no.1 moving services company. Over the last 10 years the company has helped over 1 million people move house. Visit: directconnect.com.au for more information.

Snowy Hydro acquired Red Energy in 2004 making it 100% Australian owned. With the acquisition of Lumo in 2014 Snowy Hydro now has more than one million gas and electricity customers.
