Dress for Success Indianapolis Spring 2014 Newsletter
We're gearing up for a great celebration! Dress for Success Indianapolis is celebrating 15 years of serving the women of Indianapolis! What began 15 years ago as a great idea and a few dedicated volunteers has blossomed into an organization that has now served over 10,500 women in Central Indiana as they re-enter the workforce. Dress for Success Indianapolis continues to grow and change in order to meet the needs of our women and community. We started out with a simple mission to provide suits and interview attire to low-income women. Through our early work, we realized there was more we could do to help women become economically self-sufficient. What started with suits has since blossomed into an entire spectrum of employment-based programs that help women achieve success in their careers, and their lives. When a woman walks tall with confidence in her new interview suit, we see that her life has changed. Professional Women's Group shares with tears in her eyes that she is no longer homeless, or that she got a promotion at work, we see her life continue to change and evolve. When a woman comes to our Career Development Center to seek advice on her resume, or help looking for a better paying job, we know we are now truly able to support her efforts to thrive at work. Dress for Success Indianapolis Timeline of Success:
1999 - Founded on May 26th, operating from the basement of the Church of Promise on the near Eastside of Indianapolis. 2000 - First full year of suiting women, 79 total women were served. 2001 - First ever fundraising event was held at The Children's Museum in Indianapolis and brought out 75 supporters. 2003 - The inaugural Stepping Out In Style event was held at the Marriott - boasting 300 supporters! 2002 - The organization moved to its first real 'home' at 850 N. Meridian Street. 2003 - Our first full-time Executive Director, Dana Harrison was hired. 2004 - Dress for Success Indianapolis created its first Strategic Planning Taskforce and its first Strategic Plan was implemented. 2006 - Dress for Success Indianapolis launched its second program, Professional Women's Group (PWG), a program to support working women newly-entering the workforce. The group of 6 women quickly dubbed themselves the 'Sisters in Success'. 2008 - Dress for Success Indianapolis moved into its new, and current, offices at 820 North Meridian Street. 2009 - Dress for Success Indianapolis hires its second (and current) full-time Executive Director, Barbara Ellsworth. Launched the third program - Career Development Center to help women secure new and better employment. Celebrated 10 years of serving the community of Indianapolis. 2010 - Made our Career Development Program Manager position full-time and started pre-employment training. 2012- Celebrated the 10th Anniversary of Stepping Out In Style, netting a record-breaking $228,876 for the organization. 2014 - Dress for Success Indianapolis turns 15 years old!
Every successful woman needs the education, encouragement and opportunity to have a fulfilling and impactful career. The work we have accomplished so far is meaningful, and we couldn't have done it without tremendous support. A $25,000 grant to Dress for Success Indianapolis from The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust honors the Trust's founding president and CEO Harriet Ivey who retired in January. The grant will establish a new endowment fund called "The Founders Society....Stepping into the Future." Since 1998, the Trust has provided Dress for Success Indianapolis with six grants totaling $315,000. The Trust also provided five other $25,000 grants in honor of Ms. Ivey. Other grants in Indianapolis went to Girls Inc., and the Indianapolis Children's Choir. In Phoenix, grants went to the Beatitudes Campus, Rosie's House and A Stepping Stone Foundation.
PWG Community Action Project Focused on Cooking Skills
Each year, Professional Women's Group (PWG) member's designate a delegate to go to the Dress for Success Worldwide 'Success Summit' where the delegate engages in a weekend of motivational sessions and leadership development training. They then return to Indianapolis and develop a Community Action Project. In 2013, our PWG delegate was Crystal. Crystal, in partnership with Chef Tony Hanslits of The Chef's Academy, developed a six-part cooking class focused on women returning to their families and our community from incarceration.
Seven women learned about planning healthy meals, basic kitchen skills, shopping tips and cooking techniques. Friends and family members were invited to the last class to enjoy the final meal prepared by the graduates and to celebrate their success. Each woman, and Chef Hanslits, received an embroidered apron to use at home. Crystal and Chef Hanslits hope to continue the classes
with other women who are returning home from incarceration or who are in transitional housing. We couldn't be more proud of the impact Crystal has had on our community!
Send One Suit - Week A Huge Success
This April, Dress for Success Indianapolis, together with Harrison College and Classic Cleaners, asked our community to host suit drives at local businesses and organizations. These suit and blouse donations make up about 40% of our annual inventory and the drives also contribute substantial funding for the organization. This year, while the numbers of drives were down, we collected an amazing amount of fabulous suit and blouse donations! From April 21-25, 58 different drives were being hosted all around the city of Indianapolis. Nearly 25 volunteers joined our staff at Classic Cleaner's main plant to sort through and prepare the donations for the boutique. After only 3 hours, everything was ready for Two Men And A Truck to deliver to our downtown boutique. After a few more hours, our boutique was simply stuffed with amazing suits and blouses for our women. In all, over 10,000 units of clothing were collected, over $6,500 was raised and we are now ready for the summer hiring season. We are continually inspired by the generosity of our community and literally could not provide the services we do, without their help. Check out our Facebook page to see photos from the event. Suits for Success Supporters Thank you to Congregation Beth-El Zedeck for providing lunch for the Super Sort volunteers as well as all the volunteers who helped sort, prepare and organize all the S.O.S. - Week donations. Thanks to Kenra who donated 810 shampoo/conditioner sets. The Uniform House graciously donated 12 boxes of scrubs. Thanks to Linda Zimmerman who donated 25 sewing kits. Ambre Blends donated sample packets of their delicious scents for our women. A huge thank you to Fine Promotions for donating 100 padfolios and pens for our women to carry to their interviews!
