Dress for Success1

Would you hire him? What is his attire saying about him? AND Would you hire him?Why not? What kind of impression is he making?I have heard it takes about 15- 30 seconds for a person to form an opinion about you. Youve already formed an opinion about me if this is the first time youve been in one of my workshops. They say it can take a life time to change that opinion if it is negative. So why not make the very best FIRST IMPRESSION. You can do that in an interview, by being PREPARED!

8Business Casual Attire: Professional attire that appropriately covers the body and allows for relaxed comfort.

These illustrated examples border on business professional. The two (business professional and business casual) are very similar. The difference is that business professional is a suit where the blazer and pant/skirt are the same color and same material, combined with a dress shirt (and tie for men). Business casual does not have to be the same material; does not require a blazer; and does not require a tie. Slacks that are similar to Dockers and other makers of cotton or synthetic material pants, and nice looking dress pants are acceptable.

Inappropriate slacks or pants include jeans, flannel pajama pants, sweatpants, exercise pants, short shorts, cargo shorts, Bermuda shorts, bib overalls, leggings, and any spandex or other form-fitting pants such as bike clothing

Regardless of where you work, the image you present to others through your dress will determine greatly the respect you receive in return. Slacks that are similar to Dockers and other makers of cotton or synthetic material pants, and nice looking dress pants are acceptable.

What is too casual for the workplace and interview?

9Strapless dresses, shorts, flip flops, pullovers/zip-ups and beach wear are all inappropriate for the workplace. What is Inappropriate Attire for Work?

Lets Accessorize

Lets Accessorize!

As much as I hate to say it.any extreme body piercings and tattoos should not be visible. I realize that peircing sna d tattoos are quickly belcoming the norm and dont carry the stigma they did when I as early in my career; HOWEVER, you need to be smart and consider WHO, WHERE, and for WHAT position you are interviewing. AND think about itwho the interviewing panel may consist? A perspective and people like me (older) or like you (younger)?

Are there companies that will NOT hire you if you have these peircings? Legally, the state of VA is considered an AT WILL state, meaning they may decide to let you go and there is little you can do about it. Wrenns story about covered TATS: interview they were covered, uniform at work exposed them, changed everything when he showed up with tats, Wrenn had to let him go.Remember, some people still associate tattoos with bikers, sailors, criminals, gangs and will not hire youSO, dont give them an excuse NOT to hire you.

SOhow can we do that?Possible answers:If possible, check out the dress code of the company before applyingWear a long sleeve shirt and long pants to cover tattoos on the arms and legsbut bewareif its hot can you still dress that way?If you have more than one hole I your earwear only one pair of earrings If you havent gotten GAUGES for your ear lobes.DONTor keep them to a minimumLadies with long hair can hide your gauges, tats and multiple ear piercings.Tongue piercings.TAKE THEM OUT!18Jewelry, Makeup, Perfume, and Cologne: Should be in good taste, with no visible body piercing other than pierced ears.

Fingernail Length: Typically the standard for fingernail length is no longer than the tip of the finger.

Hats and Head Covering: Hats and caps are not appropriate in the office. Head Covers that are required for religious purposes or to honor cultural tradition are allowed.

19Makeup and Perfume/ Cologne- Minimum is best. Keep in mind with perfume and cologne, LESS IS BESTYou never know if someone is allergic or how the overpowering perfume/cologne will affect the interviewerit may not be to your advantageConversely, a foul body odor can have the same affect!

Typically the standard for fingernail length is no longer than the tip of the finger. However, if your fingernail length interferes with the effectiveness and efficiency of your job performance how well and how quickly you can perform those duties (i.e., typing, washing clothes, etc), then you should trim your nails to the standard length (not to extend beyond the finger tip). Also, if you or your supe
