should…• Be able to tell
someone what an antecedent is, and find the antecedent to a pronoun
Take a look at this…
During winter snowstorms, the sparrows depend on our feeder for their food.
-What is the pronoun? -What is the pronoun referring to? -What part of speech is that?
What is an antecedent?
• Antecedents are the specific nouns that pronouns replace. An antecedent is what the pronoun refers to.
Example: Doris walks her dogs every Wednesday. In this sentence, ___________ is the antecedent of the pronoun "her.” Example: Camron loves to laugh, and he is the most beautiful baby in the world. In this sentence, _________ is the antecedent of the pronoun "he.”
Steps to finding the antecedent1) Find the pronoun in the sentence or group of sentences.
Example: The dog looks scary, but it is really very friendly.
2) When you have identified the pronoun in a sentence, ask yourself which word the pronoun is replacing. The word being replaced by the pronoun will be its antecedent. Example: The dog looks scary, but it is really friendly.
3) Understand that sometimes, pronouns and their
antecedents appear in different sentences. Example: Shamario went to the prom every year of high school. He was very popular.
