CourseDescriptionsNAHW(BASICGRAMMAR)THEORYANDAPPLICATIONThiscoursecoverstheoriesinbasicArabicgrammar.Studentslearntoapplythesetheoriesprimarilyintherealmofrecognition,andsecondarilyintherealmofcomposition.Everygrammarlectureisaccompaniedbyadrillperiod,duringwhichstudentslearntorecognizethelearnedstructuresinQuranandothertexts.StudentsalsopracticeapplyingtheseconceptsinEnglish-Arabictranslation,onaverybasiclevel.

SARF(MORPHOLOGY)THEORYANDAPPLICATION ThiscoursecoversbasicandadvancedArabicmorphology(Sarf).Studentslearntri-literalrootextraction,word-building,andconjugation.Bytheendofthiscourse,studentsshouldbeabletoextracttherootlettersfrom99%+morphologicalwordsintheQuran.Studentsarealsotrainedtouseavarietyofdictionariesinordertolooktheserootletterup.

ADVANCEDNAHW(ADVANCEDGRAMMAR)THEORYANDAPPLICATIONThisportionofthecurriculumcoversadvancedtopicsinArabicgrammar(Nahw).Studentslearnhowtofurtherrecognizeandcomposeadvancedstructures.Theseconceptsareappliedandreinforcedduringthedrillperiods,wherestudentsreceivefocusedattention.BALAGHA(RHETORIC)StudentsstudyBalagha(rhetoric)andcomplexgrammaticalstructures.Thisequipsstudentstobettercapturesubtletiesintranslationandtounderstandandtranslateadvancedstructures.StudentswillbegintobetterappreciatetheuniquenessandeloquenceoftheQuran.ARABICREADINGCOMPREHENSIONStudentsbegintheirjourneyinreadingatthestartofthesecondweekoftheprogrambylearninghowtoreadArabicwithvowels/harakaat.Thelevelprogressesthroughouttheprogramandvowels/harakaatareslowlyremoved.Bytheendoftheprogram,studentswillbeabletoreadun-voweledTafsirandotherArabicsources.ADVANCEDQURANCOMPREHENSIONStudentsreadaboutandstudypassagesoftheQuranthatcanonlybeunderstoodgivencontext(historicalorotherwise)andadditionalbackgroundknowledge.ThesearepassagesandayaatintheQuranwhosemeaningisstillunclearafterlookingupthewordsinadictionaryorreadingatranslation.

THEMATICSTUDYOFQURAN StudentsstepawayfrompurelyacademicArabicandQuranicstudiesduringthisdiscussion-basedperiodtoreflectonandtalkabouttheQuran.EachdiscussioncentersaroundauniquethemeintheQuranandstudentsaregivenrelatedpassagestothinkaboutthemdiscusswiththeguidanceofateacher.

QURANLISTENING StudentsdeveloptheirQuraniclisteningcomprehensionskillsandgraduallylearntokeepupwithandcomprehendfaster-pacedrecitation.StudentsalsobegintodeveloptheskillofcomprehendingspokenArabicreal-timethroughaudiolecturesonvarioustopics,includingTafsirandSeerah.TAFSIRStudentsreadtheTafsirof QuranwithateacherinordertogainadeeperunderstandingofandconnectionwithportionsoftheQuran.Thisactivityhelpsdevelopreadingcomprehensionandfluency,allowingstudentstoaccessthecommentaryofscholarsontheQuran.INTRODUCTIONTOQURANICSTUDIESStudentsexploretheQuranasitrelatestocontemporaryissues.Studentsbeginbystudyingaprimerinusulal-tafsirthenmoveontostudyvariouscontemporaryphilosophicaldiscussionsrelatedtotheQuran.Finally,studentslearnfromseveralsourcesthatcoverthemiraculousnatureandbeautyoftheQuran.
