After just two seasons at the helm of the SMUfootball program, June Jones has already provenagain that he is a master architect in building andrebuilding football programs. In 2008, Jones tookover an SMU program that had not been to abowl game in nearly a quarter century. Despite its
rich tradition, SMU had struggled since the early980s and the days of the Pony Express.
Jones and the Mustangs changed all that in 2009,however, snapping a 25-year bowl drought, claiming a Sheraton Hawaii Bowl Championshipand a share of the Conference USA WesternDivision Championship. SMU ended the season
with an 8-5 mark, the largest turnaround in the nation in 2009 . A winner of threeNational Coach of the Year Awards in his career, Jones was named ConferenceUSA Coach of the Year by e Sporting News in 2009, marking Jones fourthConference Coach of the Year Award in his eleven seasons as a head coach.
Jones came to the Hilltop after nine years at Hawaii, where he took a downtrod-den Warrior football program and built it into one of the most competitive squadsin the country. Jones led his Hawaii teams to 76 wins - the most by any Hawaii
coach - two Western Athletic Conference Championships and six bowl-gameappearances. In 998, Hawaii suffered its first-ever winless season. e followingyear, the first under Jones, the Warriors went 9-4, marking the biggest turnaroundin NCAA history. He developed six All-Americans and produced 7 NFL draftpicks, with a school-record five in 2007. In the five years before Jones' arrival,Hawaii combined for 2 wins and not a single draft pick or bowl game berth.
Before joining the Warriors in 999, Jones enjoyed a 2-year coaching career in theNFL, including head coaching stops at Atlanta (994-96) and San Diego (998).With the Falcons, Jones guided the team that he once played for to a playoffwild-card berth in 995. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Jones graduated fromNew York State Regents College after playing quarterback at Oregon (97-972),Hawaii (973-974), and Portland State (975-976) and went on to play profes-sionally for the Atlanta Falcons (977-98) of the NFL and the Toronto Argo-nauts (982) of the Canadian Football League.
