The next of our series of features on members of the local community: Let’s spend 30 minutes with…

Sarah Norman I have never lived anywhere longer than a year or two, so to have spent 13 years in Drayton is a true testimony on how much I love it here. 1. How long have you lived in Drayton Parslow? When I first moved to Drayton on a very wet November day, in 2005, if my memory serves me well! I couldn’t believe that this beautiful chocolate box farmhouse was finally ours. I fell in love with Chestnut Farm after seeing it in a small Savills advert. The house of our dreams. I have moved many, many times in my life, so to find a house that I could finally settle with my young family, and my horse Bradley and my two Red & White Setters, Rosie & Finn, was truly a dream come true. I had hoped we wouldn’t have move again, but we did, and thank goodness only next door into the barn that we renovated, that were the original stables. 2. What do you like best about living in Drayton Parslow? Being part of a village community, be it on a social level, as I am on the committee of Drayton Parslow Sports and Social club or the Cricket Club, or with the local equestrian fraternity. We have made many dear friends and I know if ever we needed any help I could count on any number of local friends to call on, and of course that also works both ways! 3. What is your favourite event held in the village? I think my favourite village event would either be the VPA show or the biannual/triannual (!) Cricket club ball. 4. What is your favourite book / books? When I actually get time to read, it’s usually on holiday, but I love Lisa Jewell as I grew up with Lisa and her family, and we holidayed every summer together in Thornham, Norfolk. I have read every book, from her first, Ralphs Party to the last, which in my mind is one of my favourites and I highly recommend it, it’s called Then She Was Gone. 4. Who is your favourite celebrity chef & why? My favourite celebrity chef I think would be Nigel Slater. I love his simple rustic attitude to cooking. A close second would be Lorraine Pascale.

5. The film you can watch again & again? The film or films I could watch over and over again, are pretty cheesy: Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman or any film that’s horse based!!! 6. What is the best job you have ever had? The best job I ever had was running a livery yard in Hertford Heath. It was such hard work, but I loved it, even though I was paid £50 a week!!! For a 6 day week, and Christmas Day, Boxing Day! 7. What is your favourite place to visit? This is a hard one as I have been extremely fortunate to travel to many beautiful and interesting places around the world, but I think I would have to say my favourite is the North Norfolk coast. I first went with my family when I was 7. We had a static caravan behind The Chequers in Thornham and enjoyed many happy summers there, I used to take my horse, in the summer holidays and put him in the field in front of the Lifeboat pub. I still like to go most years as we have friends that live there, and I still take the horses there My favourite place on earth is the beach at Holme nature reserve. It holds many special memories for me. 8. Who would be your special guests at a dinner? Who would I like to attend a special dinner party would be Stacey Dooley, Terry Hall, George Michael, my Mum and Dad and of course my village friends

.

Holy Trinity News

What do you enjoy most about Christmas? Is it the giving and receiving of gifts (or just the receiving), the dinner and all the snacky bits, getting together with family you don’t see as often as you would like, hot chocolate or mulled wine by an open fire, perhaps even singing carols and/or other Christmas songs? One of the things for me is the wonder of all that the prophets of the Old Testament wrote about - God coming to be in the most unexpected way: the birth of a child. A story that for the last 2,000 years has been influencing and transforming the world. Each year during the Christmas season we read these words from the beginning of John’s Gospel: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… In him was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. This is John’s description of the baby we celebrate, the one who would take God from a page to a person. In those days the way people learned about God was through reading the word (or listening to those that could read) but now we can know about God by seeing Jesus, His son. This Christmas the Church of England invites us to Follow the Star (look out for more information, #followthestar), to meet with Jesus and receive his light, and our Churches across the benefice offer plenty of opportunity to do just that. You can find details of all our services in the village news, also on our website (www.5parishes.org.uk) or on Facebook (just search for 5 parishes). On behalf of the churches and as a family, we would like to pray you have a peaceful and blessed Christmas. Simon Faulks

You Might Like This… Here are two reviews by local residents of books you might like to try.

Why don’t try your hand at a review of something you would like to share with other villagers?

It might be a book, a film, a day out, an activity, an exhibition, a recipe or anything else you think people might like to hear about as after all its your village news. You can email, call or drop a note through one of our doors and we will include it in the next edition - See page 1 for contact details -

A Good Read

Drayton Parslow Book Club Recommends… The Crying Tree by Naseem Rakha. This book was a surprise to all Book Club members, as although it`s subject matter is very harrowing, we all enjoyed reading it. The story is set in America mostly in Oregon. It is a complicated, layered narrative about a family`s journey towards justice and forgiveness after the shocking murder of their son. One of the reasons we particularly liked it was that the author creates such wonderfully clear-cut realistic characters, each one of them seems to jump off the page! We found that the story moves along at a good pace and it retains it’s tension to the end.

A Good Read For Younger Readers Georgia Darnley Recommends… Paper Towns by John Green Paper Towns is a romance/mystery about two teenagers, one very popular and one not. When they were younger, they were very close friends but they aren’t anymore. Quentin becomes concerned when he hears Margo has gone missing and decides to try and find her. The book follows Quentin and the mysteries he has to solve to find her. Margo leaves clues for him in mysterious places and ways about where she might be and he has to follow the trail to find her. I would rate the age of this book as 13 plus. An exciting book that keeps you turning the pages to find out where Margo actually might be and wonder if she will ever return. It is one of my favourite books that I have read again and again and I would definitely recommend reading it.

Abigail Myers’ World Challenge

In summer 2019 I am going, along with 14 other students from the Cottesloe School, to Nepal. We will spend 3 weeks in the country, trekking around the Himalayas, meeting people from the Seven Women Charity, where we learn to cook traditional food and we will help in rebuilding a school damaged by the earthquake of 2015.

Before I go, I have got the mammoth task of raising £3,800.

I have a job at The Boot in Soulbury where I wash up every Sunday lunchtime, I sell on eBay (from my mum’s clothes to my brother’s Xbox games).

I babysit, dog walk and pet sit. My most unusual customer is Shelby the Tortoise. She doesn't want much from me except putting her back on her feet if she has got stuck on her back.

At the beginning of November lots of friends and villagers came for a cuppa and a chat. Lots bought gifts and ordered a Christmas cake, chocolate Robin or chocolate orange pudding which I will be making closer to Christmas. My Dad's company, Hardcastle Blake, have very kindly sponsored me, which means the task isn’t as daunting as it could be.

If you would like me to babysit, walk your dog or watch your tortoise or know of a company that might like to sponsor me, see my contact below. My cakes and Chocolate Robins and puddings are still available to order.

Thank You

100th Anniversary of WW1 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

To mark one hundred years after the guns fell silent on the world's first global war a special Service of Remembrance was held at the War Memorial on 11 November.

Rev. Canon John Saunders led the service assisted by John Perry and John Preston. This year the names of those who served from Drayton Parslow were read out by Ian Hounslow and Richard Wemyss, Richard also read out the names of relatives of residents who served in the war. Liz Carter-Gates read the List of Fallen. Helen Lee read the bible reading and David Perry read The Kohima Epitaph. Wendy Lambros played the Last Post and the Rouse. The Drayton Parslow Singers sang Abide with Me and the wreath was laid by Mac. Then Jacob Cotton and Marney Trenzinger laid a wreath made by Years 1 and 2 of Drayton Village School.

Following the Service of Remembrance, tea and coffee were served in the Three Horseshoes and at 12.30pm the church bells were rung, joining in with churches across the country, as an echo of the bells that rang out 100 years ago at the Armistice.

Thank you to everyone who took part in the service, the bell ringers and Denise and Steve for helping to make the occasion so special, thanks also to the Parish Council for arranging for the road to be closed during the service.

I would also like to thank the poppy collectors and Helen New. We raised an amazing total of £779.08, the most ever collected in the village.

Your Garden in December Gardening Advice from Gill Gallon, Potash Nursery www.potashplants.co.uk

As Christmas approaches, you can take it a little easier without any risk to your garden; maintenance is the most important thing until the Spring. But of course, there are still plenty of smaller jobs you can do! Jobs for the garden • Plant hardy trees, shrubs, roses, climbers and perennials, providing the soil isn’t frozen

solid or waterlogged. Keep off heavy clay soils when they’re wet or frozen as you can damage the soil structure.

• Continue to tidy up beds and borders, clearing away dead and dying leaves and faded flower stems. Deadhead winter-flowering pansies to keep them flowering during mild weather

• Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place • Check that greenhouse heaters are working OK • If ponds freeze, carefully melt with a pan of warm water. Don’t smash the ice – this can

harm the fish. Try to prevent freezing by inflating a plastic ball or bottle and lag stand pipes.

• Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls), prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding

• Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops • Take hardwood cuttings • Reduce watering of houseplants • Net holly bunches to protect them from birds to ensure you have berries for Christmas

decorations.

Topical Tips – Caring for Your Christmas Tree Provided you look after your tree it should easily survive for over 4 weeks. It is essential that cut trees are fresh when bought, the needles should not be dull and dried up; the branches should not be brittle. Even with a ‘non-drop’ tree, you must expect a few needles to fall when shaken. When a Christmas tree is cut, more than half its weight is water. Keep your tree outside, preferably in water, until it is required. Use a stand that fits your tree. Avoid whittling the sides of the trunk down to fit a stand. The outer layers of wood are the most efficient in taking up water and should not be removed.

Cut about half an inch off the bottom in order to open up the trees pores before bringing it indoors. Check the stand daily to make sure that the level of water does not go below the base of the tree. Keep trees away from major sources of heat (fireplaces, heaters, heat vents, direct sunlight). Lowering the room temperature will slow the drying process, resulting in less water consumption each day. Container grown trees have been grown for at least one season in their pots. They should be watered and cared for as for any house plant. After Christmas they can either be planted out or they can be left to grow on in their pot. Wishing all our customers a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year. Gill Gallon Potash Nursery, www.potashplants.co.uk

CRICKET REPORT This autumn has been one of celebration for the cricket club in the wake of having won division 5 of the Four Counties Cricket League. A most enjoyable end of season game between the Saturday and Sunday XI was won by the latter and was then followed by some enjoyable Asian food thanks to the efforts of some of our players. There was an excellent turnout with past players also coming to enjoy the celebrations.

The cuisine was followed by the presentation and the roll call of the trophy winners:

• Friendlies batsman: Hasan Ali • Friendlies bowler: Jack Woodhouse • League batsman: Waseem Dad • League bowler: Terry Dickens • Friendlies players player: Jon Adams • League players player: Zaheer Mahmood • Umpire’s “Man of the Match” league award: Irfan

Javed • Most improved player: Josh Duncan • Clubman of year: Roger Willis

Our departing club secretary/scorer was then thanked for his efforts over the years in playing a crucial role in running the club, having been the secretary for more than 10 years and scoring games since 1984. Barrie Norman then presented a large cake beautifully decorated with a cricket ball, bat, stumps, bails and with “DPCC” around the side so many thanks to Linda Fedoriw for her painstaking work in making it. And after the cake Barrie presented a framed signed photo of all the players.

Then in mid-October at the League presentation evening at New Bradwell, Terry Dickens was presented with the Division 5 trophy and commemorative plaque that the club then keeps. And Zaheer Mahmood was presented with the trophy as the highest run scorer in division 5.

This is my last cricket report so good luck to the club in forthcoming seasons and no doubt I shall be checking their results and even popping back occasionally. I shall miss the banter and ambience. And special thanks to Barrie Norman in his unstinting support in helping to run the club in recent seasons.

This was a brilliant opportunity to reinforce what we have been learning about in our science and geography topics this half term.

We experienced what an earthquake feels like and came face to face with a T-Rex!

We also took part in some workshops: investigating what we can learn from fossils and saving a town from a volcanic eruption. It was certainly a busy and fun-packed day!

The children dressed in clothing from the early 1900’s, baked trench cake, made poppy wreaths, wrote thank you cards to the soldiers and enjoyed learning songs and rhymes from the wartime period. It was certainly a busy and fun-packed day full of emotion and gratitude!
