The emphasis will be on controlling watercolor media and tonal drawing to re-create the appearance of nature. The development of forms as derived from the study of perspective, composition, value and color will play as the foundation for this class. Topics include still life, landscape, and figure. SA 2 CAPTURING COLOR IN PASTEL Norma Machado, 6 Weeks Monday 1:30 – 4:30 February 7 – March 14 Tuition $230 This course is designed for both novice and beginner as well as for the intermediate pastellist who wants to take a refresher course. Students will learn the language of color by exploring various techniques of pastel painting including creating color with color (overlaying several colors in order to produce secondary and tertiary colors). The hands on painting sessions will primarily be in a landscape theme with an emphasis on creating color harmony. Group critiques and individual guidance will be given. SA 4 SEMINAR IN WATERCOLOR Dewitt Hardy, 12 Weeks Tuesday 10 -1 January 18 – April 5 Tuition $ 320

This seminar for watercolorists encompasses a broad study of technique and subject matter. Clean wash fundamentals, the study of light and dark, shaped washes- including linked and turning shadows are some of the topics covered, as well as volumes, composition, color, drawing, and spatial relationships. Subject matter is by individual preference, and can include floral, still life, landscape, figure and architecture. Demonstrations by the instructor illustrate all techniques. Students will be evaluated at their own level. Materials list sent upon registration.

SA 5 FIGURE IN DRAWING & WATERCOLOR Dewitt Hardy, 12 Weeks, Tuesday 2 - 5 Jan. 18 – April 5 Tuition $320 Model Fee $95

This class is for those students who are ready for intensive work with the model and a review and analysis of the human form. Drawing is emphasized, as well as a brush-up on watercolor fundamentals- volumes, color, composition, and clean washes. Painting the live model in the environment includes an exploration of the nuances of the human figure, some anatomy, proportion, and gesture,as well as the study of the environment inhabited by the model. SA 6 OIL PAINTING WITH LAYERS & GLAZES Todd Bonita, 10 Weeks Tuesday 6 – 9 February 8 – April 12 Tuition $300

The tradition of oil painting with layers and glazes by such artists as Vermeer and Rembrandt has been in practice since 15th Century Renaissance. The techniques and methods discussed in this class attempt to simplify the process into clear, compartmental stages. Students will work from their own photo reference on assignments that explore various ways to handle transparent and opaque color, examine different kinds of tonal underpaintings and address which colors work best for glazing. Both classic and modern approaches are covered. We will also see how to incorporate texture, scumbling and direct painting techniques into this age old system. Through discussion, demonstration and practice, this course is designed to enable the student to comprehend each step of this process.

SA 7 CREATIVE WATERCOLOR Dustan Knight, 6 Weeks Wednesday 9 – 12 January 19 – February 23 Tuition $ 230

Exploring creative watercolor processes in still life and landscape, students will be introduced to materials and techniques like the use of iridescent and metallic watercolors, tissue paper, and miskit, as well as stenciling, sponging and splattering. Instructor demonstrates all techniques, with lots of critiques.

SA 8 THE EXPRESSIVE COLORED PENCIL Carol Ann Morley, 8 Weeks Wednesday 1 – 4 March 2 – April 20 Tuition $280

Explore the potential of this innovative medium. The colored pencil offers a broad range of expression, combining qualities of both drawing and painting. From photo realism to abstract painting, the colored pencil can mix and blend like translucent watercolor. Exert more pressure it mimics oil painting; change the paper surface it's a whispering pastel. It's fun to work with and there is no set up time or clean up! Find out how this color medium can work for you, experiment with different textured and colored paper surfaces and learn the cool techniques this versatile medium can achieve. All techniques will be demonstrated by the instructor. You will work from still life and photo imagery. Individual interpretation and expression will be encouraged. All levels welcome.

SA 9 REPRESENTATIONAL OIL PAINTING (All levels) Sean Beavers, 13 Weeks Wednesday 6 - 9 January 19 – April 13 Limit 12 Tuition $340

This studio class is for anyone from beginner to the advanced painter looking to develop their visual vocabulary and expression. From realism to expressionism, there are some simple methods that can significantly improve your oil painting, through the use of light, color, atmosphere and form. Students will be introduced to the knowledge and skills necessary to represent the world around them. Personal projects and assignments will help explore these concepts. Individual expression and growth will be encouraged. All painting levels will meet simultaneously, from beginner to advanced. Materials list presented at the first class.

SA 10 BOTANICAL DRAWING IN COLOR Carol Ann Morley, 10 Weeks Thursday 12 – 3 February 10 – April 14 Tuition $300

Explore colors of the natural world through sketching and drawing plants. Learn how to read the natural color of flowers, fruits and leaves and depict them with colored pencils. Students will be introduced to colored pencil techniques along with methods to create realistic portraits of plants. You will learn how to slowly develop your renderings and stay in control of your color through tonal studies, selecting colors for light and shadows and making a colored chart to test color choices. Colored pencils are fun to work with and you are encouraged to use the botanical images in your own creative way. All levels welcome.

SA 11 DRAWING BEYOND THE IMAGINATION Erin Murray, 12 Weeks Thursday 6 - 9 January 20 – April 7 Tuition $320 Model Fee $50

For the introductory and intermediate student. This drawing class is structured to help students to develop the ability to see, understand, and accurately recreate tonal relationships, shapes, and structure. Emphasis is placed on the drawing process, the development of critical thinking, and self-critique. We will use a range of materials including charcoal, graphite, pen, pastel, and conte crayon. Students will work exclusively from life observation (still-life and the figure) in class and will also gain practice in reproducing master drawings. SA 12 ILLUSTRATING CHILDREN”S BOOKS Teri Weidner, 10 Weeks Thursday 6 – 9 February 10 – April 14 Limit 10 Tuition $290

Learn the process for illustrating a children’s book, from rough thumbnail sketches to a 8-to-16 page mock-up. We’ll study elements such as page design, character development, and pacing, and explore how to combine them to create a compelling book. This class is open both to beginners and to those already acquainted with the field. Students are welcome to bring a book idea to develop in class, although the focus of the class will be on developing the illustrations rather than the writing.

SA 13 EASY ACRYLIC Dustan Knight, 6 Weeks Friday 2 – 5 March 11 – April 15 Tuition $230

For beginners as well as a refreshment for the more experienced student, this course will encompass basic techniques of acrylic painting including color mixing, value studies, composition and design. A variety of subject matter will be explored, from the techniques of still life painting to topics students wish to generate themselves. Styles may range from realism to expressionism. The instructor demonstrates all techniques.

Splashing and splattering big juicy florals using a direct painting technique, Dustan Knight teaches the essence of fearless spontaneous painting. Demonstrating step-by-step, Dustan helps you loosen up while emphasizing basic compositional rules and design “laws”. We will be working wet into wet with later glazing and detail work. Though we will have a floral arrangement, this style quickly moves beyond rendering. Fun and relaxing, this approach celebrates the unique creative spirit of each artist. Learn to approach your work from within and apply the techniques needed to take it to the next level. This course will focus on developing a unique voice and vision based on open discussion of the creative process and weekly critique of work produced out of class. This course is designed to identify stylistic strengths as well as obstacles and help artists to get out of their own way in order to create more personal and powerful work. Each class includes individual and group evaluation with special emphasis on idea generation and content. Through readings, discussion, observation, image invention, and experimentation, work through the development of personal imagery utilizing your choice of media. Come prepared to build on your previous work (bring pieces in progress as well as completed pieces), experience, memory, ideas, and methods of working.

Here is your chance, Green Foundry presents the opportunity for your saved treasures to last forever; direct burn-out bronze casting. This class will focus on using any organic material to create a bronze casting. Create an exact replica of any organic matter using a high heat mold. The mold is fired and the debris from the original object is removed and bronze is cast in its place, leaving a perfect reproduction of the original piece of driftwood or lace. SA 19 FIGURE SCULPTING ON THE ARMATURE Christopher Gowell, 10 Weeks Thursday 10 - 1 January 27 – March 31 Tuition $295 Model & Clay Fee $150

Using a live model reference, we will design and build armatures to sculpt a standing figure in clay. Techniques for modeling from direct observation will be taught, including working with movement, proportion, volumes and planes, and the impact of gesture to create visual form. Those who wish to cast their pieces may inquire at our Green Foundry for prices on molds and casts in aluminum, iron, and bronze. Water clay and plasticene provided for quarter scale figures. Larger scale figures in plasticene will cost extra.

SA 20 A&B JEWELRY & METALSMITHING Alice Carroll, 12 Weeks 20 A, Friday 10 – 1 20 B, Friday 6 - 9 January 21 – April 8 Limit 12 Tuition $320 Lab Fee $50

This beginning intensive will cover the use of basic hand tools and the primary techniques in making jewelry and metal objects. We will cover hot and cold connections, piercing, surface decoration, light forging, forming, and basic stone settings. We will also explore various ways of casting such as the use of cuttlebone and delft clay. Students are encouraged to create their own designs. Bring a sketchbook to class. More advanced students will receive one on one help in applying advanced techniques to their designs. The class will be a mixture of demonstrations, lectures, and studio time.

SA 21 FELTING: FLOWERS & MORE Jennifer Field, 2 Sessions Saturday 9 – 4 February 12 & 19 Tuition $200 Basic Kit $30

Explore the magical process of felting in this informative and fun workshop. Both wet and needle felting techniques will be introduced to create a variety of materials and three dimensional shapes. Basic projects will be presented with a lot of room for imagination and personal expression. Projects may include such natural objects as flowers, birds, and butterflies.
