Year 10 – 11 Subject Selection for 2017 This week saw the commencement of the Year 10 subject selection process with information sessions from subject head teachers, continued next week with an information evening for parents and students on Thursday June 23 from 6pm and culminating in week 10 with our personalised interviews between students (and parents, if required) and one of our curriculum head teachers for guidance on the sometimes tricky road of selecting subjects for senior study. This carefully designed program is all part of the important process of constructing a timetable to give students as much choice and flexibility as possible. It is complex and time consuming – but one we take very seriously in order to give students opportunity to study courses they find stimulating, challenging and rewarding. We want them to maximise their chances of doing well, finding satisfaction in the learning process associated with their selec-tions. Our curriculum offerings are large, enabling much choice for students. This is an advantage – but, also, a minefield for unwary players. At all times, we are available for advice, consultation and negotiation on subjects for the senior school. Peter Kennedy, Head Teacher Teaching and Learning and Andrew Mitchell, Deputy Principal will lead this process. We would love feedback on any aspect and want the opportunity to clarify or assist, so please do not hesitate to contact us if there are any queries that haven’t been addressed at our forums. Parent/Teacher Evenings Important to us is your feedback. Equally, we hope our feedback to you is valued as another strategy to assist students to learn well. Parent/Teacher interviews will continue next week on Tuesday June 21 for parents of Year 10 students and in the last week of term on Tuesday June 28 for parents of year 9 students. All bookings can be made electronically. Last year we changed some aspects of the parent/teacher interviews. We determined that one year group at a time might be a more efficient way of giving parents, and teachers, the opportunity to talk about learning. We would welcome any suggestions on this new process.

“School Daze” by Chris Bonnor and Bernie Shepherd I am arranging for some copies of “School Daze”, an important, recently- published booklet subtitled “What My School really says about our schools” to be distributed to members of our P and C. I’ll also place some copies in our library if parents would like to borrow from us. Kate Mathews, our librarian, will be only too happy to assist you. There is so much myth about school funding (who gets what and why), educational improvement, what are the best performing school and why, the public/private debate, so it is really important to have some wisdom and the facts. Ex principals Chris Bonnor and Ber-nie Shepherd, have forensic minds, with an ability to distil complex “eduspeak”, analyze data and seek evidence to debunk assertions and falsehoods. They are seeking something elusive: the truth. Divided into 13 sections, the booklet addresses the following:

1.A school is a school is a school – or is it? 2.Mind the gap – it’s getting wider 3.Mind the gap – it’s getting deeper 4.Australia’s school education equity

problem 5.Our equity problem – over time and

place 6.The consequence: students

achievement is drifting 7.Busting a myth: “Private schools get

better results” 8.Those HSC distinguished achievers 9.The money-go-round 10.Busting a myth: “Private schools save

public money” 11.Busting a myth: “Money doesn’t

improve results” 12.The illusion of school choice 13.And where does the school community

go? If we want good policy in education, we need good information to make good judgments. Have a read, and see what you think. Vicki Brewer

It was our absolute pleasure to

visit Castle Hill High School this week to

receive an incredible gift of $8000.

Inspired by one of their teachers, Debbie

Boss, this money was raised by the

students, teachers and parents from this

wonderful school community through a

variety of fundraising activities. A group

of student leaders visited Bear Cottage

late last year and happened to learn

about our interest in purchasing an

interactive television so that some of our

patients might be able to continue their

education if they wished. Unbe-

knownst to us, the students then got to

work and raised the funds we needed

in record time. We are overwhelmed

by the enthusiasm, kindness and

genuine connection that this school

has formed with Bear Cottage. It has

been a privilege to get to know you all

and we thank you for your generosity.

missed any vaccinations last year will

receive a catch up vaccination at this

It is important that those students receiving vaccinations have a good breakfast before attending the clinic. Students may also bring a bottle of water with them. Any questions regarding the clinic or

Following the zone soccer tournament, Lachlan Campbell, Taylor Cambaz and Damian Cupac were selected for the Sydney West Soccer Team. The Sydney West team then entered the Combined High Schools Tournament earlier this term finishing in the top four which is an excellent achievement. Damian, Taylor and Lachlan played

outstandingly throughout the three day

tournament and due to their outstanding

performances, they were selected for the Combined High School Team. A special mention for Lachlan Campbell who was voted the best player of the entire tournament. Congratulations to all three boys and good

luck in the next tournament representing the

Combined High Schools Team.

slowly again and were under pressure for the entire game, going try for try with their opposition, yet eventually scored the winning try in the final minute to proceed to the final. In the final the girls met Hills Sports HS, where they competed valiantly, only to lose 4-1, yet the game was much closer than the final score suggests. Well done to the girls who now progress

through to the CHS round of 16 to be

played in Wagga Wagga later this term.

On Friday the 27 May the Open Girls Touch

Football team competed at the Sydney West

Touch Football finals at St Mary’s. The Girls

started off in fine form, cruising through their

early games by playing an exciting brand of

touch. During their last round game, the girls

were down early, but led by their senior

players in Ally Dallaway and Brittney Clifford,

they fought back to take the win. The girls

proceeded to the semi finals where they

played Nepean High School. The girls started
